Jungle fans-So, update. This week, our new timeslot: Friday at 9:00. We'll air two more episodes in December, then two more in January. After that they'll look at the ratings and all the other elements in the equation that only network execs and the assistants who love them fully understand, and determine whether to order more episodes or not. We're not cancelled we're not uncancelled. Yet. At least we're hanging in longer than a lot of our competitors did: Dirty Sexy Money, My Own Worst Enemy, Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, etc. And that's entirely thanks to you guys! Now, back to the show. I know a lot of you were expressing worry – distress -- anger! -- about Nico and Kirby breaking up. So brace yourselves for tomorrow night's ep! But keep in mind that we looove Kirby, too, and so does Nico. But she's been through a lot this season – single for the first time in her adult life (she married Charles out of college); she might need time to sort out what she's really looking for in this second chapter: A baby? A peer? A love-puppy like Kirby? Don't give up on Kirby yet. Beware the beta male – he has sly ways!

Another bit of Jungle News. This week was Candace Bushnell's 50th birthday! As Wendy said about Kirby's mom: "If she's pushing fifty, fifty's afraid to push back." For a little treat, we caught up with Candace and talked about Lipstick Jungle and her birthday wish – I bet you can guess it.


What did you enjoy most about seeing the Jungle come to life?
Bringing the TV show to life from the book was a long process. In the fall of 2005, I started working with Katie O'Connell at NBC on the first pilot script. There were so many ups and downs in the two and a half years until the show first aired in February of 2008. I think what kept us going was a deep determination to get these female characters onto the small screen. Most strong women portrayed on TV are either in procedurals – doctor, cop and lawyer shows -- or are cartoonish depictions. We felt there was a place on TV for a realistic portrayal of contemporary working women, and we simply never gave up. After all the hurdles, for me, the show finally felt real when I went to the stages and saw the sets -- Nico, Victory and Wendy's apartments, the offices of Matrick Verner. That was one of the most exciting moments.

What surprised you most? As the writing and acting evolved, did the characters change in ways you didn't expect?
A television show is always evolving and changing. There's a day-to-day fluidity that's a necessary part of the process. Sometimes the changes are due to technical reasons – for instance, the script might call for a scene on a boat, but if we can't get a boat, we might change the location to a bar. There's also a degree of audience response that influences the direction of the show and the characters. For example, in the book Lipstick Jungle, Kirby Atwood is a minor character. As played by Robert Buckley on the show, there was such an overwhelming response to Kirby that we decided to feature him (often shirtless) in every episode. So the audience's response to Kirby had an effect on Nico's storylines.

What's your favorite episode?

I have several. I love episode six when Wendy tells Nico it's a good thing she's not a mother. It's such a devastating moment in Nico and Wendy's friendships, illustrating how fragile and deep our female friendships are. I also love the episode when the three women go to the inn in the country. It's hilarious and so poignant.

What outfit did you wish you could steal from the set?
Most of them!

What will you miss if it goes away?
Hopefully, the show won't go away. There's been such wonderful support from the fans, and we're all so appreciative.

What did you do for your birthday?
I had a small cocktail party at my apartment and invited about fifty of my dearest friends.

What is your birthday wish?
For Lipstick Jungle to live!

For fans that aren’t “Nielsen” voters but watch every episode Live and DVR, what specifically can we do to help save the show? I’ve signed numerous petitions, sent lipstick to Ben S and Jeff Z, watched videos on hulu and nbc, added comments to NBC message boards, called Maybelline and Jamie French, told my friends to watch etc. BUT, if NBC execs are only paying attention to LIVE Friday night viewer’s Nielsen numbers, I’m not helping. I’ll send more lipstick; write more letters, make more calls etc. as I’m sure other LJ fans will do as well. If there’s one thing that will really get their attention please let us know so we can make it happen for you! Save the JUNGLE!

Ok I just finish watching Friday's episode... and I just love this show. What execs do we need to contact to tell them... PLEASE DON'T CANCEL THIS SHOW. What else is on that would take it's place? Honestly, I love the characters...the woman... They all work. the entire cast works...me and my girls call during commercials... to discuss the last scene. You know I love James Pattersons books and was really wanting the Womans Murder Club the show to be really good. I tried to be devoted...but something was missing. LJ works... !!! Save the Jungle!!!

I just finished watching tonights episode and LOVE LOVE LOVE LJ. NBC just has to work out something with the advertisers so LJ can be around for many more seasons. There is't a show that compares to it. I was a loyal Grey's Anatomy fan but would pick LJ in a New York minute. Please NBC listen to the fans and study how all of this can work out. I've watched every episode LIVE and DVR it because I watch it over and over.

Great episode! It is so refreshing to have a show about women that has real issues in it (other than crime!). It is funny, touching and sad all in one episode. There is nothing else like it on TV. The writing is so much better this season. I think some of the viewers that did not give it a second chance after the pilot would actually love and loyally watch the show if you could pull them back in. But...you can't get new viewers without promoting the show. Fans can only do so much...the network needs to make an effort to attract more viewers as well. It just seems as if NBC has already given up on the show. The last few episodes have been amazing and no one knows they are out there! Please try to make this show work NBC. How can you not realize what a great show you have on your hands?

I loved the latest episode and am looking forward to next week (even though I love Nico and Kirby together). Please rethink your strategy NBC. DVRs are here to stay. NBC promote the show!!!!!! The Nielsen ratings were up but could've been better. The fans can't do this all by ourselves. It's the networks job to PROMOTE and NBC has been extremly slack about it. I think Fridays @9:00pm is't a bad day and time but alot of fans think LJ has been cancelled. So the word needs to get out that LJ is still around. I love LJ. I, too, am sad about Nico and Kirby's breakup. I hope it doesn't last long. I do hope NBC reconsiders and don't cancel. There's a reason the network is dead last. I love the show and think it has a lot going for it other than the ratings...which are unfortunately the most important criteria. I can't believe that NBC could not get better ratings on this show. I think it is indicative of the stregth of the network and who is watching their shows rather than a statement about the quality of the show. I would LOVE to see a third season! I love, love Lipstick Jungle as it's been said a thousand times. Please beg them not to cancel!! I'm so thankful it was moved to 9pm, much better time I think. I couldn't always stay up till 11pm although both my DVR's are set to record and I watch them religiously and also 2 or 3 times. Do they catch all the DVR recordings?

Love Lipstick Jungle. I am not excited about it being on friday nights but since I got a DVR in August I can live with it. But I am in FL for 2 months with no DVR and missed an episode last week. This show moves so fast I feel I am out of the loop. Can't wait to get home to my DVR. I want to see Wendy leave Shane. I am sorry but from day one I can't understand what he is saying. He mumbles. I like that new guy she is flirting with. Please don't cancel one of the best shows to come along in a long time. I am so sick of CSI and Law and Order shows. Did you hear the latest announcement by NBC??? They cannot figure out how to write, produce and market enough prime time dramas to fill their network time slots that they are putting Jay Leno on at 10:00 five days a week! Your network is absolutley pathetic! I love Jay Leno, but not at 10:00! NBC will now have minimal programming and none during the true adult hour, 10:00. I for one will not be tuning into a network that is only airing reality shows and talk shows. Spend some money and create worthwhile programming...you are a major network! Lipstick Jungle is a great show and your network is not worthy of having it! You don't promote it and you don't have any worthwhile programming around it to draw in viewers. Big mistake NBC!

It looks like Lipstick Jungle fans will be paying for Jeff Zucker's bad decision 5 years ago to give the tonight show to Conan O'Brien in 2009. He couldn't bear a better network (ABC) getting Leno, so he has given away all 5 10:00 weekday prime time slots to him. HUGE MISTAKE NBC!!! You are so short sighted and cheap! I love Jay Leno, but his numbers do not justify a 10:00 time slot 5 days a week! You finally have one great show...Lipstick Jungle...get some more good programming and actually create a schedule worth tuning into!

If LIVE viewers are such a big deal at this point why not promote it. I just saw that Katie O'Connell is being let go from NBC. She is the one that Candace Bushnell worked closely with on Lipstick Jungle. Candace please take care of our show. If something happens with NBC please try to get another network to pick it up. I've never commented about any show being cancelled but I feel this one deserves a fair shot. Just a suggestion...move LJ back to a night during the week like when it was on Wednesdays. I know Friday nights have to hurt the ratings. I, myself can't watch LJ on Friday nights because of work so I have to tape it or watch it online every week, where when it was on Wednesday I could sit down with my mom and watch it every week. Another thing, Fridays are a BIG "getting out of the house" night for people. Why not move it back to a night where more people are home after work?!!! I believe this would greatly help the ratings. What do other fans think?

Live ratings are the most important thing to NBC...right? Don't Law and Order reruns get better ratings than Jay Leno? When are you planning to run those? Not earlier than 10:00 I hope. I love Lipstick Jungle. Love it. Love the women, love their guys. Love it. I just wish the writer's would develop the characters and story lines a bit more. Sometimes I feel like there's things that happen between episodes that I don't know about. Like Wendy and Shane - they're fighting, and then they make up, and then they fight again. Seems like episode where Wendy kissed that other dad needed a bit more attention. And their daughter...one week she's an angel, and then she's a total brat the next week. Please please please save Lipstick Jungle! But please work on the story lines a bit more!

It's the only show that speaks to me, as a woman who's in her 30's, would consider herself educated and successful. There is NO other show on television at the moment that has female characters that I can identify with. "Gossip Girl" and "The Hills", although salacious, don't really speak to my inner-type A, fearing for what life is like after 30 when trying to balance work and family in a city. PLEASE, NBC...read these comments and realize that if you give it time, like you've done with Friday Night Lights, it'll come around.

I also have no idea whether anything written on this blog ever gets read by anyone that makes a difference, but...I just don't get it NBC. I am a smart, rational business person and I get that ratings are king. If your show does not have good ratings, you get canceled. Period. But...you have never given this show a fair chance. What gives??? The first season is a throwaway. It was shortened by the strike and the pilot was just ok. The writing and storylines are completely different at this point. It is a totally different show and MUCH BETTER!!! You make a good decision to give it a second season, but then only a weak attempt to promote it. LJ gets a few promos during the olympics, but no where near the same level as other new shows like My Own Worst Enemy and not enough during prime female sporting events like gymnastics and diving. Those promos were also run a month before the season even started. Once the season got started you moved the day and time around and completely abandoned promoting and advertising this show. How can you expect to attract new viewers and to persuade those that only watched the pilot to give it a second chance without any promos? So many fans adore this show. There is nothing like it out there. It is so much better than all the other female magnet shows on major networks (Grey's, Brothers and Sisters, Desparate Housewives...). You could defintely attract those viewers if you would give the show a little bit of effort. How could you have made such a big investment in an amazing cast and new producers and writers only to abandon the show for dead on Friday evening with no promos. It is not like you really have any other great dramas in the works. As a matter of fact it looks like you have just thrown in the towel by putting Jay Leno on every night at 10:00pm. How long do you think that is going to last? It certainly will not save your failing network! Wake up NBC and promote Lipstick Jungle and give it one more season to prove itself! You have a special show on your hands...but you definitely don't seem to know it!

It would be so sad to end this show on a bad note. We at least need a third season to wrap things up! This show is great, but no one gets a chance to know about it because NBC execs are not interested in promoting it. It's not as if you stopped promoting it when it moved to Friday night. You really never tried with this show. Zucker and Silverman must be afraid of strong women. It is obvious at this point that at least two strong women should have your jobs! Since Leno is going to kill the 10pm dramas on NBC, does anyone think that Lipstick Jungle is too risque' or inappropriate for the 8 o'clock hour? I haven't seen anything on the Jungle that is any more racier than the things seen on Chuck, Life or Knight Rider. Would LJ work at
8 o'clock? I think having the Jungle come on earlier in the week at an earlier time just might work. Well, we know not all of the shows on NBC are bad, but still only a few make it onto the TOP 20 list. That should be telling the network the problem isn't the shows. Yet, they go along and axe good quality programs like Lipstick. They need to take a page from FOX and promote itself through all media. Use the entertainment magazine shows, talk shows, public appearances...anything they can to get people talking about the network and its shows in a positive light. I don't believe the other networks have better programming, I just think people are so accustomed to tuning into a particular program, it takes a lot of cross media promoting to shock them out of their trance and try something new. Leno at 10pm is not the answer. He belongs on the Tonight Show!

I agree with troubled. Not only does NBC need to promote this show on their own network, but they need to promote it on other stations and in other media vehicles. NBC is a troubled network with the least number of viewers. Your problem is that many of the right viewers are never even turning your network on. Why don't you hire Aaron Sorkin to write a show that airs before Lipstick Jungle and then market the two shows everywhere. Get creative NBC! You need to pull new viewers into your network or it is going to keep crumbling. Jay Leno belongs on the tonight show, not at 10:00. You will completely ruin your network if you don't figure out a way to come up with new appealing dramas. Adverise in Malls, public transportation, billboards, magazines. Get the images and stars from this show out there and pull people into your network. Lipstick Jungle could change your fortunes if you would just give it a real chance!

I would love to hear an update from Ilene on the whole Jay Leno disaster...although I am sure they limit what you can write. Was there an order for three more episodes to be written or is that a misprint? Could you give us some insight into why NBC never promotes this show. They have been promoting Dateline for Friday, but never include Lipstick Jungle in the promo. Please don't cancel this show! I saw on "Yahoo!" the list of shows that are canceled.. and saw that LJ was one of them! No! How could you? You desert your loyal fans and leave them hanging all because YOU switch the show around. Your series, although good, has been lacking some of the key elements your first season had. Yes, I'm being honest. You wanna know what had the advertiser happy last season? Their products were being bought.. you found sutle ways of incorperating your advertisers into the show and having their commercails. Just like you did when NBC first started as a network. Advertisers were in the show, they were sold by the stars. You did it first season of Lipstick Jungle... not over the top... but you made our ears perk, you were fighting to keep afloat, that year, against Cashmere Mafia. What happened? Your Fans are still here. Your actors are the same. Your writers (ecen if some have changed) know what sounds good, and you know you want watchers. Stick it in a time you know will work. Use subtle songs like you did last season.. yes.. orchastra music that fits with the Bitter:Sweet theme is nice.. but I loved being able to go and find the music I heard on the show that night. You are ruining a profit grabber... I wish you would change your minds.. it took a long time for a lot of great shows to turn INTO great shows.. don't let this one fall. You have a huge group that watch it not only in the united states on their TV's every sunday... but in other countrys... or on TiVo, DVR, online, or simply waiting till the end of the seasona and buying up the Season on DVD at watch it religously and infect all of their coworkers. You're going to ruin something that is so clearly needed in the economy right now. and with the upcoming episodes, even including one of our main characters going through some money problems, OUR show is becoming more and more relatable.
Don't get rid of a show with that much power.
We don't want to have a relationship with a Network that we can't relate too.. and Lipstick Jungle is what is making it work right now.

I just watched episode 10 where Kirby and Nico break up. OMG the scene where "I'm not happy anymore" illuminates was genius - so poignant. I played it back at least 3 times, it was so heartbreaking = the cover of the old Duran Duran song "Come Undone" in the background was magical. So here is my point...
: Wonderful acting, fantastic storylines, amazing soundtrack, charismatic actors that are fully believable in their female friendships - warts and all, class, fashion and careers. Hmm. What is NBC's problem? Is NBC discriminating against women? Is LJ lacking a male audience (no t & a like SATC)?
I am loving the fact that (although heartbreaking) Nico and Kirby broke up because it only gives scope for them to both find their way back to each other after doing what they need to in this point in their lives. However, I fully understand the distress of some viewers where if the future of the show is uncertain, will we ever get the fairytale ending? Same with the Andrew McCarthy plot.
I am a 36yo mother of two, and I consider myself to be a discerning viewer. I watch a total of 3 weekly shows - LJ being my favourite. If networks are going to cancel shows after a couple of episodes, fail to adequately promote and facilitate an appropriate time slot given the audience, then why are we, as viewers even bothering to watch tv? Why bother even watching a pilot when we know it could be cancelled at the click of a finger?

If the DVR numbers make the ratings acceptable for Lipstick Jungle, you just need to rethink the way you advertise. Do more advertising with the show's characters as you did with Victory and Maybelline. DVR viewers are more likely not to fastforward past those ads. Also do more with product placement. This is an aspirational show and viewers are definitely looking at what the stars are using/wearing on the show. Apple products have amazing air time on the show and I am sure it influences purchasing much more than another apple ad that is playing while the viewer gets up to run the kitchen or elsewhere during the show. Company ad campaigns that feature the show's stars out of character are also less likely to get fastforwarded (Volkswagon and Colgate with Brooke Sheilds). Get creative NBC...DVRs are here to stay!

Well, Lipstick Jungle got one 4 or 5 second promo at the end of the today show. I can't believe that was the best you could do! You run the same promos over and over. Ilene, please give us some info about "LJ ordering 3 additional scripts" as stated on Wikipeda. I sooooooo hope this is true. I've been reading on the web about the NBC shake-up with execs and adding Jay Leno to the schedule-looks like NBC is cutting BIG costs. It appears its very expensive to produce a show like Jungle approx. 3 million dollars per episode. Still holding out hope that if LJ don't make it on NBC another network will pick it up. My opinion LJ could make NBC a top rated show if they would just market it in every way like they should. It's pretty obvious they don't KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!

I am hoping to hear an update from you today Ilene. It sounds like NBC has already made up its mind given the ratings and the Jay Leno announcement. Do other networks ever pick up discarded shows. Is that even a possibility? The Wall Street Journal talked about other networks raiding NBC for writers and producers after the Leno announcement...what about shows? I know the ratings would make any network scared to take it on, but I have to think the problem is NBC, not the show! When you don't promote or advertise a show and change the night and time every couple of weeks, it is hard to increase ratings. Please let us know if there is any hope!

I hate that the show may be in danger of ending, already...you can see Tim Busfield's creative hand in it, reminds me how much I miss intelligent shows like 30-Something, so I hope this one hangs on. As to Nico and Kirby, I say Griffin is a real man, and I'm enjoying how his character is developing and the attraction between them. Kirby has so much less to offer Nico than Griffin. I love these 3 women, and feel like they are my friends. I love the fact that they EAT!!! Real food, in large amounts, like they really enjoy it!! I will be very sad if this show ends.
