Dear Jillian,
For people who have off-beat schedules, like all of the people who work late at night, or college students who have wacky sleep patterns because of studying, what sort of dietary schedule should they follow? I have been told that if you are going to eat food late at night before you go to bed, that it should be really low in carbs due to the way our body processes them. Is this true? I work in a restaurant, so it is very easy to lose yourself for 9 hours without eating because you are so busy, and when you get home you binge eat because you are starving… Help! Thank you for your time!

Hi Jillian, My husband is tall (6'6") with sore knees. Can you recommend some cardio exercises for someone with bad knees? He would love to be able to run and jump, but it tears up his knees. I was wondering what else he could do...any ideas?

I have been a police officer for over 16 years. I have had some extremely serious injuries in the past two years and am being forced into medical disability. Since the injury, My body has transformed from a fit and ready for action body to an overweight, weak frame.

You are my hero in every way. I am desperate to get back at least some of what I was, but with multiple surgeries, medication and an inability to workout, I am scared. I'm afraid i'm losing myself.

I was just wondering how i can loose weight..I am 63 have had my left hip and knee replaced, my right knee is bone on bone so it is very dificult to walk..I weigh around 215..this replacement has been done all within the last 2 years.

I'm a 50 year old with serious health issues who desperately wants to be on the biggest looser. How do we apply? I currently have diabetes, one adrenal gland meaning a low immune system and a severe case of the Epstein Barr Virus where my organs are inflamed. My only fight against this virus and some of it's life threatening complications is to loose weight, control my diabetes, and be totally healthy. Isn't fear a great motivator? Fear of the scale - fear of the trainer - fear of the other team - fear of being sent home. How can we find that kind of fear to get us motivated. No one is here to give me that kind of boost.

I am and have been try to loose weight. I eat weight watchers and make sure no meals after 7PM. My problem is I suffer from low back and neck injury and not sure what exercises I can and should be doing?
I really need to loose 50 pounds. After being on pain meds for over 5 years and limited exercise other than walking I need input and advice .

i have two obese friends who i, at various occasions tried to talk into getting healthy, but it has not worked. life always gets in the way, whether it is having a baby, loosing a job or just being sad. recently we had prepared for evacuation for two hurricanes in as many weeks, and helped a few people in need, including one woman who can barely walk due to her long-term obesity. the logistical trouble of having that experience has led me to try and get at least one of my friends to loose weight. how do i start?

personally, i am just trying to fit into some pants again, as i gained 10-lbs in a month - 5 is gone from working out at least 3x/wk - for me its about stopping the lumpy legs more than anything. thanks! oh, and i was curious, where did you disappear to last season? glad you are back!!!

It messed up, and at 9:20 or so, it cut off and switched to Law and Order, or whatever was supposed to start at 9:00. We missed the last 30 minutes of the show!!!!!!!!!! Hi Jillian, I'm so glad you are back, wish you were my personal trainer!!! I have been working out and trying to stick to better foods. I have lost 15lbs. in the first month and a half I started back in Feb. & now I have plateaued which stinks. I work so hard to just work off a couple of pounds by dieting and exercise, but my "cheating" for my birthday for only 2 days I almost gained back 5lbs.!! What gives??!!

Jillian ~ I am what one would consider a diehard biggest loser viewer. The problem is, that is as far as the motivation train goes. I can’t seem to get past just being a viewer. I don’t have a support system that I can depend on, nor do I have a workout partner. I have always had issues with working out myself, and I don’t know what to do in order to break that cycle. I have 2 small kids at home, work full-time separate shift from my husband, and recently went back to school. I desperately want to get in better shape as I just feel sluggish. What can you suggest to an individual that is ready but not sure what to do to break the fear and find an exercise regime that I can do alone and be able to stick to it?

Hi Jillian, First thing, I am so glad to see your back this season.
I need help and advice. I'm 47 years old and feel more like 60. I'm at least 150 lbs over weight for my 5'3" medium build frame. Exercise is very very difficult for me due to health issues, I have arthritis in both knees some days walking is so painful I just limp though the day walking as little as possible because of the pain. I'm a RN and work 12 hour shifts in the ER. I know I'm way out of shape and control and find at times of stress and high activity I'm short of breath and often worry that I'll be the next Code Blue they call. Any suggestions on and excerise program I could do with my arthritis? My weight is affecting so many areas of my life I know I'm pre-diabetic also. I need help but have failed so many times with diets I just don't know where to turn or what to try next.

I have always struggled with my weight, at age 10 I wore a size 42. I have bounced up and down my whole life. In 2000 I was in a severe car accident which had left me unable to run, walk any extended periods, and just generally always in some ammount of pain. I am now at my heaviest (340) and a size 50, up from 210 after I got out of the hospital. The wife and I have joined the Biggest Loser Club, any tips on modified exercises?

I know how hard it is for these teams I can sit on my butt and eat my leman pie and say I can do that,lol... I excerised 3 times a day for 3 days I was sore 4th day and quit....

Welcome back! I’m glad to see you are back. I tried out for the show and thought I was lucky number 7 as I was 7th in line as we camped out the night before casting call. However, I guess I should not have believed in luck as I didn’t get cast. I just wanted to know do you do private personal training. I never thought I’d say I needed someone, but I am in desparate need of your help. I’ve tried to do it on my own, but it’s just not working. I have a very active soon to be 2 year old and I want to be here for him and play without getting tired. I am 32, 5'8", 323 lbs. Please can you help?

My trainer has me in a strength training program. With that said, I'm in the "bulking" phase. I'm so afraid of getting fat again. Do you go through bulking phases to get strong? If so, how long do you bulk before you go into a cutting up phase?

Jillian, I need your trainer experience. I am hoping to get up early to tomorrow morning and start working out at the gym. I need some motivational tips, since it is mind over matter to strongly focus on getting up and get going to the gym. I You are really my fitness Role Model, i recently bought your "Winning To Lose" In January I wieghed 198 lbs. and i am only 5'3. Now i have dropped 25lbs and i feel and look soooo MUCH better. I want to get down to 145, I am eating by the book, and i am working out at high intensity for 1 to 2 hours 5 days a week. Cardio and Free weights. The other two days I take 30min walks pushing the stroller with my two kids in it! I try to stay active i am a mommy of a 1 and 2 yr. old. Am i doing everything i can? My question is about where to start. I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. I have tried every diet known to man, only to fail at them all. I am currently at my highest weight of 279. I am soooo overwhelmed by the enormity of it all!!! There are a bazillion eat-this-to-lose- weight and do-this-exercise-to-lose-weight "plans" that I don't know what is right or wrong. I know that sounds stupid, but it is so overwhelming!! How do I get motivated and get in the mind set to get healthy so I can live the life full of energy that I have always longed for?? I find time to walk 3 days a week 2 miles each day, but I want a more intense workout and can not afford a gym or trainer. Jillian.. I was wondering what you tell people who need something to get them out of a depression. I quit smoking 21 months ago and now i havent stopped eating. I feel like if I dont have the cigs. then I cant stop the weight from coming on. Im 5'9 and was 175. im am now at 205 and climbing I no i need to workout and diet but im just lost and depressed about it. I liked to workout but i just keep eating. what do you tell people that snaps them out of it?

My question for is How do you get started, how do you get motivated because you know you have to lose weight. My sister is diabetic, I have High Blood Pressure and Cholestrol Problems. We both try so hard to help each other but just can't seem to get there. We both would love to come to the training camp but can't afford no income coming in for 3 to 6 months. I've always have loved to exercise so I'm not so much in bad physical condition but I am over weight. Suggestions on a proper diet and exercise program would be great.

I see people at the gym that crank up the incline on the treadmill and then drape themselves over the console hanging on for dear life. Is there any benefit to this or would they be better off lowering the incline and LETTING GO of the machine?!

I started losing weight about 2 months ago. I weighed an even 300. I have lost as of today 21 and am becoming even more motivated the more I lose.I'm 5'7" and hvae a fairly large build what should I set as a goal weight range for myself.I'm not dieting I have simply cut way back on amounts of what I was eating nad am eating healthier and I have stopped consumming so much sugar. I am wondering how I can motivate my husband who is also over weight to lose weight with me. He ways about 13 lbs less than I do currently. We have 2 young children and I want us to set the example for how they should eat and I want to teach them now how to eat helthy so that hopefully obesity, heart disease, and diabetes don't become issues they have to deal with. I want to be here to watch my children grow up and I want to be here to watch their children grow up.

I've been overweight all my life. In the last 10 months I've managed to lose 19 lbs by changing my eating habits and joining a gym. What are your recommendations for eating before & after a workout and do you recommend protein shakes. I typically do 30 minutes of cardio and 60 minutes of weight training

I have watched the biggest looser these last 3 seasons and have seen the amazing afters with all of the players. I just need a kind of exercise program for myself. I do have two bad knees and so am limited to an extent. But I know you can think of something for myself to get started on.

Hi. I live in Celina Ohio and would love to audition for the show, but it apears I have missed the deadline. I weigh about 270 and have a very low self esteem but I am very competitive and know this is just what Id need in order to lose weight! A trainer and competition!

Jillian, My trainer has me doing strength training and we're bulking and it terrifies me. I'm afraid I'm going to get fat again. But I do want to be stronger. Do you cycle between building muscle and burning fat? How long do you do each phase? How do I gain muscle without becoming fat again?

Can you give me tips for running and upping my weight loss? I put my heart into working out 5 days a week and lost 35 lbs. about 3 yrs ago then I quit and gained some. I started back up a few months ago and it's slow going. Am I right when I think for some reason it's more difficult to shave that weight off again? Tips?

hey jillian i am 20 years old and i just reached 200 pounds. About two years ago i was feeling really good about myself i was losing weight and in single digit sizes then i hurt my neck and exercising was unbearable. Well i finally got a doctor to help me with my neck and now i need advice on losing the weight. Most my weight is in my stomach. My family has a history of diabetes and i dont want that. i want to feel good about myself again as well. Any exercise and eating advise would be great. Especially anything to help the stomach like i said that is where most of my weight is. i think you are great on the show and it is truly inspirational thank you and keep up the awesome work

My question is, I am not overweight, however, I had cancer surger and now have a "bloated" abdomen and want to know how to get rid of it. Other then sit ups, which I a doing, what can I do to reduce it? Please help!

Ok - love your workouts...but not sure I could handle them right out of the box. 41 yr old with bad knees since I was 13, crash diets (2 dexatrim and a diet coke a day for 6 months) resulting hyploglycemia. Smoked for several years (still kind of do) but I actually do enjoy working out. I am at least 50 lbs overweight and would LOVE to speed up my metabolism, any suggestions and any workout ideas that won't leave me in dire pain and not want to go back to it the next day?

What do you recommend for a successful workplace program?

Hi Jillian, I had all three of my children c-section. Often times I experience pulling pains and burning where my incision is during excercise or even vacumming. Any suggestions on how to start "small" and work my way up to a heavier workout? Should I avoid tummy excercises at first or just dive in. I just recently started doing the treadmill for 30 minutes 2-3 times a week, but I know that's not enough. I really would like to lose the apron! Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!

My muscles have atruify because of several surgeries and I never wanted to do the rehab in my teen years and now i'm 29 and i'm quiting smoking and trying live healthier. But I want to strengthen my muscles so I won't need the crutches or wheelchair anymore. My joints are also extremely tight in my knees and hips. Hello! I am a 31 year old BUSY mom of two. I have yet to lose my weight from having my second baby, 4 years ago. I work 40+ hours a week, go to football 4 days a week with my son, am in college and a wife at the same time. Second...I'm a full time college student. So, my budget really doesn't give me that much of an option when it comes to joining a gym or anything like that. I have been trying the 3 hour diet. You basically eat every 3 hours. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner - nothing. You are supposed to lose belly fat do to the stabilization of your blood sugar. Any comments would be appreciated.

I weight 285 pounds and really do not eat heavy meals but I drink a lot of pop, if I cut back on some of the pop will that be a big start to some of my weight loss. I also walk a lot while working and chasing after kids so why can't I lose the weight. Please help!

Let me ask you this- I am 227 (recently lost 41 lbs) and still attempting to lower that number. I hold all my weight in my stomach and upper body (apple, as you say)- I have a lot of muscle. How do I get rid of the fat in the stomach and upper body? How do you eliminate sagging skill. I've recently lost 42lbs & want to lose another 30 but noticed that my tummy is just hanging there?

Hi! I am curious to know if I am eating too few calories? I am trying to keep them around the 14-1500 limit but I am constantly hungry! I am eating clean and do hard workouts 6 days a week with cardio everyday and weights 2-3 times a week. I weigh 138 and have a good amount of lean muscle. Just want to lose about 10 lbs.

Why were you not on the show last year? When they advertised you in coming back they said you were banned, for what? Was it for working them out too hard?

This past weekend I was a Cycling Instructor workshop/certification with a Ntl. Organization (will remain nameless). The Master Trainer made a statement I found surprising that the 2 classes which people results in the least amount of weight loss to be Cycling and TurboKick Box, due to heart rates being elevated above the 'fat burning zone' for the majority of the class. Hi, I have watched biggest loser since season one. I had two children had heart failure with one and near heart failure with the other. Last year BL inspired me to work out and I did I lost about 30lbs, however, I had a knee injury and it threw me completly off. MY need is normal now but I have gained once again and need some support and suggestions how to get back up again. I know I can beat this obesity thing.

I have a question. The food on the biggest loser menu is not what I like to eat. I don't like alot of the ingredients they use in the food. What do you recommend I do about that?

Will they ever have 2 women teams and 2 men teams on the biggest loser? I find they pick off the women first, it doesn't give the women a fair chance unless they luck out and win immunity or a challenge.....Also, men seem to lose more body fat than women.

I weigh 168 and am 5' 7". I have a Torn Meniscus and am unable to exercise at this time due to dr. advice. what else can i do to exercise my legs and gluts and not hurt my knee?

Hi Jillian, I currently weigh 206 pounds, I lost 80 pounds in 2002-2003 from 2 years of a walking class at college, but I gained 36 pounds back, and it is really difficult to lose it again, I even live 4 blocks up a hill in San Francisco that I walk up everyday, and the weight isn't going anywhere. Temptation is also everywhere around me and it is hard to resist. What would you recommend that could help me? I even wrote a letter of six pages to all the BL Trainers but I don't know where to send it. I wish you all can help me, everyone that loves the show wishes they could be trained by you all!

I'm female 5'0" and alway hovering around 145. I do have a nice hour glass shape so the weight is luckily in the right areas. My abs need more work now but I need help trying to slim down my thighs. Because I'm shourt thats really all I have is thighs. I refuse to lose my butt and rack so how can this be acheived? I think I will still look ok mins no more than 15-18 pound. In the past I've worked out hard 5 times a week 2 hours a day and never really got below 140 even eating right(Tried real hard to have 3 meals a day) and my thighs stayed about the same even with all the squats, lunges, etc. I need to start working out again but felt like it doesn't really matter with no significant changes. Any suggestions?

Yesterday I joined a Gym and signed up for PT I'm having a hard time with the ammount of Calories they put me on... I was eatting 1400 Daily but they want me to eat 1600 what do you suggest I do? I talked to them about it and they were like we know what we're doing just eat what we say... My Goal is to lose 2 pounds per week so if I do follow their plan will that slow me down?

I was wondering if you could help me figure something out. I am 5'5" and 160 pounds. In July I totally changed my diet, no more junk, lots of fruit, vegetables, chicken, etc. I eat approximately 1300-1500 calories/day. I am also drinking lots of water. I exercise (fast walking)(lots of steep inclines and steep hills) for 1 hour 5-6 days a week. I am so discouraged, since July I have only lost 5 pounds, and the scale hasn't budged in weeks. I have lost inches though which is great, but I want to lose weight. Can you help please?? Thanks!

I would think the idea of sending people home on a weight loss show would be bad for that persons confidence and motivation to lose weight What happens to those who are sent home for support? Is it that way?

I am 5'3" and weigh 175 pounds. My favorite food is meat (steak, pork chops, etc). I love to eat junk food and snacks. Sometimes i think that i eat just for the sake of eating, even when i am not hungry. What advice do you have that may be able to help me lose the weight in a healthy manner? Keeping in mind that I am currently in college and have limited resources.

I have recently lost 50lbs (diet and exercise) And was wondering if you had any suggestions about exercising with fatigue. I have Ms and it is a huge problem. I would like to lose about 13 more pounds and be at 125 I am 5'5 38 yrs old.

Jillian, Welcome Back !! Will you show us the photo of you before you became so physically fit? I only caught a glimpse the time you showed it and would like some inspiration knowing you were not always the tiny person you are now.

Have you ever dealt with body image issues? Do you think your tactics are too negative on the contestants? Why or why not?

Jillian, how did you manage to motivate the contestants in the desert without breaking their spirits? Do you try to motivate people differently, depending on their personalities?

Can you help me?? I've tried eating healthy but its hard and very expensive. I've joined herbal magic and LA weightloss but no results. I'd rather starve to lose the weight and I know that's not healthy but I'm really worried about not being able to lose the weight and dying from obesity related things down the road... PLEASE HELP!!! Hi Jillian,so glad you are back. My starting weight was 189lb.I have lost a total of 25 lbs.Im 5' 5 and weigh 165 lbs.Im 47 yrs old what should my goal weight be? I also had a c section when I was in my 20's.So I do have alot of scar tissue.But I am limited because I had meniscus repair on my knee.I do cardio everyday/walking.and I do body strength exercises every other day.Any suggestions will greatly be appreciated!!

I work 11pm-7am sleep most of the day. I don't eat enough meals when I'm awake. At what times should I be eating my "5 meals a day" between 5pm and 8:30am? And what kind of foods cause I'm normally not that hungry, but I know I need to eat to lose weight.

3rd try. Thanks for the oppurtunity. Your show focus is on HUGE weight loss. I have 130 lbs to loose and am 54. I worry about hanging skin. Any advice ?

Is it better to work out in the morning or at night? I work out at night but if I can see results faster I will do it in the morning! thank you!

I'm on Day 4 of Making the Cut. So far so good. How do you recommend working in cardio (type and duration) on the off days? Also, what's a good next step after the 30 days are done to keep making progress, or at least to not backslide? Repeat the same routines again, or move on to a different program?

Hi Jillian. I just had a question about weight loss. I have a heart condtion and I am pretty restricted as to what I can do. I can walk, and lightly jog, pretty much and that is it. I watch what I eat, but I guess that doesn't help. Maybe I need a new diet? I really need to concentrate on my thighs and hips. What should I do?

Welcome back! My ? is my work schedule - I have to get up at 3:15am be at work by 5:am I take a break at 7:30 and 10:30 (20 mins each) leave work at 1:pm. What do I eat that early in the morning. I was fixing smoothies for both breaks - but it's starting to get a little cool ( weather wise)) When I get home I have started walking on my Air Walker for 10mins a day. I have ordered the cookbook. Any other advice is more than welcomed!!

Hey julian i just wanted to say you have helped me a lot!!! i am 16yrs old and i have just gotten over surgery on my ear i was unable to do pretty much everything i wasn't able to work out or anything for over 2 yrs b/c i would get dizzy and pass out due to this ear disease i have. every season i watch you i just want to get up and exercise as much as it bothers me you haev givin me the will power to lose weight. i havent lost much but i am working on it. i was on steroids for over 2 months and it made me gain over 60 pounds and so i am trying to work it back off it is very hard b/c my mom always tells me muscle weighs more than fat but i work out so hard and it doesn't show on the scale so it kinda frusturates me but i have to remember muscle does weigh more than fat, and i am building muscle and burning fat. so thank you so much for being such an inspiration to me!!!

your show has been such an inspiration to me. i started my journey back at the end of december and have since lost over 50lbs with a routine workout and diet. i am 5'7 and 160 and would like to get to 140. any tips for reaching my goal? and what are some good workouts, cardio that is for getting legs in better shape. thanks for all your advice!

How come nobody ever looks like they need any excess skin removed after losing all
that much weight? thats my biggest fear of losing the extra weight is that I will be left saggy & baggy!

Jillian, glad your back! I wanted to know as far as eatting, is it better to brake up the meals into 5-6 small ones or keep the 3 meals a day. I need to kick up my Metabolism. Or could you recommend anything to do so I can get a jump start again. doing cardio everyday and lifting every other day.

I've got no problem identifying my motivation or keeping active. The real problem is that there are times where I know I'm pushing myself too hard.

If I have a week where the scale simply wouldn't budge despite my absolute best efforts, my first instinct is often to get back to the gym immediately & cut calories, (even if this mentality is why the scale has stopped moving).

Any advice on how to stay focused without getting obsessive & over doing it?

How do you advise clients that have trouble stopping when they should?

I missed you. I am so pumped about this years new season. I need some motivation. I love to exercise and have no problem finding the motivation to keep exercising, but I need help finding the motivation to eat right. I am 5'7 and weigh 190. I need to lose but I am so frustrated as the scale does not budge. I wish I could come on the show. I know I would be a good contestent. Any ideas on keeping me on track?

My arms do not straighten because of bone structure obstruction at the elbows. This makes it hard to lift weights. What would you recommend for lifting?

What do you do when you just can't seem to find the motivation? Every day I get up and say I am going to do it. By lunch or dinner I am done. When I lived in NYC it was much easier -- I had a trainer and my Optifast diet. Since moving back to Montreal and the stress of my life here and no trainer or my regular gym - it's harder. I know it is affecting my health, (I am 39 and on BP meds, and my sugar is being watched very closely - oh I am 5'0 and 220 lbs). I KNOW I would feel better - but I just can't get motivated to do it. Plus one of my bigest hopes is to have a date. Despite being told I am the kindest, funniest, most generous person, I have also been told, "why don't you call me when you have finished losing your weight" or "I just can't get past your weight". I know I have to do it for me. But for some reason the motivation is hard to find this time.

Hi Jillian - SO glad you are back!

I put on 100 lbs after losing a baby last year. My weight loss doctor has recommended Optifast. How do you feel about that type of diet and working out? How often should I be working out?

Jillian I'm so glad your back. I use to be 110 pounds then had c section when I had both of my son's it's taken me a long time to be able to lift weights or do any kick boxing, or even ride a bike, since the muscles in my stomach would tear and it became very painful to do anything. Now that I'm able to work out again, and since muscle remembers (hope mine has long term memory) should I stick with super setting or do Pyramids for the best results. I do cardo everyday and lift every other. I know should be resting more during lifts but can't help it.

what is the best way to determine body fat %

I lost 62 lbs 3 years ago and have kept it off. However I cannot lose the fat on my upper back which is heridatary. Is there some exercise I could do to get it off?

What are good lower body exercises that don't require a machine or full ankle flexibility?

I had ORIF surgery last year and my ankle still doesn't flex well, making squats and lunges difficult. Is there an alternative?

1. Have you kept in touch with team members from previous seasons? How are they doing?

2. You have a reputation for being tough. Have you ever had to adapt your approach for anyone or does that work with everyone?

Jillian, so glad to see you back on the show this year! My question is this: I have been running pretty consistently for the last 2 years, and in that time have trained for and completed 4 marathons. My problem is I am still 50 pounds overweight, and the weight does not seem to be coming off. I have tried higher calorie diets, lower calorie diets, everything I can think of. Is there some sort of combination of foods that I should be eating to kickstart my metabolism and get my weight loss back on track? I love the running and feel great doing it, but I was losing successfully before I started, and now I've had 2 years of nothing. What can I do (beyond giving up running, which would be a last resort)?

Glad you're back, Jillian. I was wondering how hard to push myself with muscle building exercises? I have arthritis in my knees and hips as well as a bad lower back. How do I know when I'm pushing myself enough?

When I use the treadmill I keep getting shin splints I was wondering what I could do to prevent that in the future. I usually have better luck when I do the elliptical.

i was just woundering i am trying to get on the show, i am 18yrs old but i have never seen a boy or girl that is younger that 20 why i really want and need this! i need help with my weight and i dont want to look like this any more!

You all talk alot about the emotional/psychological side of losing weight. I had a gym teacher that made fun of me and singled me out. Now, I think of exercise as punishment. How do I get over this?

I'm glad you're back this season. What would be the best routine for someone trying to lose a few pounds? In other words, could you plan a day for us with a routine (weights, cardio) and suggested meals? It might be something from your book. :-)
