Happy Thursday, blog buddies!

Well, ehh...

It's not really the hap-hap-happiest of Thursdays here around The Tonight Show as it looks as though we'll all be laid off tomorrow due to the ongoing strike.

The good news? Both the writers and the producers are talking and trying to reach a compromise.

The bad news? It seems as though they won't reach that compromise by tomorrow - the very latest the network has agreed to extend our contracts without shooting new shows.

So... whatev. I'll be fine. But everyone here is affected by it and the mood is kinda down in the dumps, so I didn't feel like turning my camera on and screaming, "Hi, blog buddies!"

Instead, I'm gonna use that energy to console my friends and co-workers who are also losing their jobs and income at this oh-so-not-the-convenient-time of year.

I will, however, meet you all in a bit in our super-cool and high-tech audio/video CHAT ROOM for a SYNCHRONIZED CHAT later this evening!

Fun, right?!?

Okay, here's the deal. Let's all meet in the CHAT ROOM at around 5pm Pacific Time/8pm Eastern Time and we can chit chat about whatever we want.

to Bellasmomma in Everett - I totally understand. When I was in college my nickname was Crunch. I had 6 accidents in 2 years and none were my fault (really). I can remember even simple household noises made me jump. cupboards slamming was a big one. Time does heal. I hope that you are fine physically. take care and don't shut yourself in. It's hard. Even thinking about it (for me about 30 yrs ago) I still get tense in my neck. surrond yourself with all of your favorite people and let them do the driving, get out and enjoy the brisk, sunny day(before Saturday when we might get some snow - especially you up there in Everett!).

I'm finding myself with post traumatic stress syndrome because of car accident. It was just so horrific and I keep hearing that crash boom sound in my head. It could have been much, much worse. For those of you who do not know how to get into the chat here are the steps
Click on the link under Ross's blog that says chat
Create a Userplane Id
Create a password
Click on the right side of Ross's photo on the word chat.
It's real easy to do it. The second time I accidently went to cyber chat land. Practice it a few times.
Ross, this is sad news that you will be laid off. No one has mentioned getting to the unemployment office ASAP and thank God for savings to fall back on. California is a very expensive place to live so I know being laid off is a very bad thing especially in that area.
I am hoping to make it to chat. The last time so many people were in there that my computer froze up and had a melt down.
If we can't continue to post here then hopefully we can post on Myspace and not lose touch. This is a big family and I pray we stay together.

I'm having trouble with the chat too Grandma Moses. I did get in once.. after about 20 minutes of repeatedly trying.

Whenever I try to edit my profile it says I'm logged out & gives me the error messages over and over when I try to get back in. I even get them when just going back to this site & clicking on chat!

Can anyone help? I'm wondering if it's a userplane problem maybe not being very compatible with macs?

I'm so sorry to hear about the layoff. You have been a bright spot in my dreary days of unemployment. I am one of nearly 50,000 people who have lost their jobs in the mortgage industry. We are having a time of it trying to find work. It sucks but you will learn a great deal about yourself. And since you are such a bright soul, you will be OK!!!

Oh, Ross, I am so sorry that it had to come this far and and that you and Daria and all your friends and co-workers will be laid off! This really sucks! Hopefully they will come to an agreement soon, and that you will all be re-hired as soon as possible!!!

On the bright side, more time to spend with Louise, Target shopping (definitely the $5 fun now, in light of your finances!) and maybe go home early for the Holidays.

I have tried in the past to get on to userplane. couldn't do it tonight either. Ross, you have a lot on your plate but when you can look in to this. I use firefox. Didn't work. Went to explorer and it said to use firefox! I give up.

ross hope all works out .always remember when your layed off the first thing to do is call all the people u owe money to from the landlord to credit cards
tell them that you have been layed off but will still be paying and in some cases they can lower your payements untill you go back to work ..some cases no they cant but its always good to call and let people know you have been layed off..best of luck to you

I am having problems too. I had a username but it said OOPS. So, I signed up again, and nothing. Kinda sucks, that userplane.

I can't get into chat either. I would image that at least a hundred or so are there.I am going to wait till all the logging in dies down in about 10 minutes......if it does die down....probably won't..

Ross is correct about this being the WORST time of year for a layoff no matter WHAT job you are doing. I too hope for a speedy resolution to all the issues that are at stake.

I'd think NBC would be losing money selling commercial air time. Do advertisers pay as much for sponsoring replay episodes as they do for prime time? Empty your cache, keep trying.. hopefully the issues will be worked out soon.

Hey Ross...hope the major shock of the layoff is getting over and your friends and coworkers can begin to move forward, a healthy direction. Yep, it really sucks. But somehow each person will find a way to make it work. The strike can end any time. This is crunch time and the writers know that now the strike is making a bigger impact on the networks. That may be in their favor. Perhaps it's a bargaining chip that will end the strike sooner.

I always wonder why the CEO's and CFO's etc... Do not get their own pink slips when these situations arise? I bet the strike would be settled very quickly then! Hey there everyone! I visit this blog sometimes just to see how Ross is doing. Now that I actually have a working computer I wanted to join the chat room as well. TY, Mercynow and Lynn D! I'm staying home again today to rest and drink plenty of fluids. Oh, and due to a couple of minor overflow situations, I also have to get my sheets in the laundry.

Ross - I just found out that my mom's colon cancer that we thought was gone has now spread to her lungs. I really need a pick-me up. She is my best friend and I don't want to lose her.

I know you are too nice to say it Ross so I will say it instead - I am shocked and appalled that Jay Leno isn't following the lead of David Letterman and Conan O'Brian and covering his staff's salaries during the strike. I read somewhere that he claims he hasn't even touched the money he has made off the Tonight show yet - so why doesn't he dip into it now and keep his loyal staff employed during the holidays???? SHAMEFUL OF HIM!!!

I know whab! It's really kind of astonishing, considering Leno probably has more money than Letterman and Conan combined!

And during the holidays too? I gotta say the only reason I ever tune into his show is to see Ross - this just confirms my feelings about the man.

I hope someone shames him into it.

Alex & Whabbear ~ Just came in from finishing exterior lights and pressure washing the last leaves from the driveway; Slipped off my soggy crocs, popped some homemade chicken soup in the microwave, ran a bath to defrost my toes and see what's happening in Rossland. Gotta say...so glad our whabbear's feelin' better. MORE glad my soup has no rice, 'cause a visual of whab "spouting once, spouting twice" made me a bit less hungry! But I'm smilin' :o)

Happy Friday? I'm sorry to read about the impending layoff. Still, at least everyone knew about it before hand. I would have loved to have such knowledge all those times that I was laid off (especially that one time I was laid off after I came back from vacation).

Still, not having the regular paycheck is a bummer no matter what time of year.

Ross, Daria and all the layoffees, hang in there and good luck.

To everyone who is suffering the cold/flu that is going around, my condolences (a couple of my family members are sick, too).

Laura: I've been thinking the same thing. The nonwriting staff won't be getting a penny more than they do today following a strike settlement, so they are the big losers from this.

With Conan's announcement, Jay Leno stands alone.

The reason workers strike when times are busy is so that negotiations might come to an end more quickly.Striking while things are slow wouldn't make sense. These workers are losing their pay checks when they strike. Employers would have no incentive to negotiate so strikes would last till times get busy. Hopefully you can easily follow this.

GRANDMA MOSES: Thank you for familiarizing us, well at least me, on the workings of people that do go on strikes. It makes more sence to me now.

Hi Ross - Been reading ur blog for months but never sent in a comment. Just read that 2nite Show staff was laid off 2day. Wanted you to know I'm thinking of u and hoping u r ok! And I hope this settles soon 4 ur sake and all those writers and non-writers affected.

I have never heard of a single individual giving money to hundreds of workers in a strike before. Of course I applaud Letterman and Conan for doing so! But I don't think we should get down on Jay for not doing so. What about all the other shows- what millionaire is compensating them? I'm sure there are alot of rich producers, directors, etc...that could contribute to their employees. But, should they be expected to...I say no. Strikes are difficult no matter what industry, I dont think we have to hold the "stars" responsible even if they have the $. We don't see that in other businesses why should we "expect" it here?

*Dianne/Denver ~ my maternal grandmother (from Malmo Sweden) always had a prune cake on the kitchen counter...with a quite sweet white frosting as I recall. It was actually pretty darn tasty.

*mercynow ~ no rice either this time----2 c cooked diced chicken( or sub) breast; 4 c. stock; 2 med. onions; 1 c. chopped celery; 2 cloves minced garlic; 2 c. diced or pureed tomatoes; 1 c. chopped fresh spinach; oregano/terragon/chili powder; 2 c. Half-n-Half at the end (simmer/no boil).........good for what ails ya---or anytime the temperature is below 60! (Dontcha luv "Alex & the Family Stone"?)

WHABBEAR AND MEK: Did you read my post the other day about the PRUNE cake I had on Thanksgiving vacation?? Just for either of you to think about it right now, probably isn't good. I still wonder whoever heard of prune cake?

I just hope that the layoffs will help things come to a close soon. The writers deserve what they're striking for and I support them. It's still unfortunate that others are being affected by it though.

Yes, that is true that Leno is a very rich man and can easily afford to pay his staff. Has anyone seen Leno's collection of classic cars and Harleys? It's worth million alson for his "toys".
His wife won't even shop in the USA. She flies out to Paris, etc to buy her clothing so with that knowlwdge I agree that Leno should pay his staff. I watch his show mainly to see Ross on it. I am sure the ratings sky rocket when Ross is on.
Typically I stay neutral on this blog but I must agree with the others above me who feel that Leno can pay his staff.It would not be a major sacrafice. He makes a lot more money than Conan and other talk show hosts who are paying their staff.

FYI,...It doesn't help the writers if JL pays his crew. He is supporting the writers more so by staying out because then NBC is losing $ and will better understand who helps them obtain those $'s in the first place! (i.e. the writers) :) They will all come to a compromise soon enough.

I was bummed to hear that the layoffs are going to happen, but from what I heard on the news last night there is a proposal for the writers and they are considering it! So hopefully you will be back to work next week.
