OH, you have touched on a subject today - or rather yesterday since I am responding on Tuesday morning!
Cranky people really can ruin MY day! I will admit, I have my own moments - but mine are normally justified! HA! How's that for denial!?!?!
I have a Service Dog - he is a Golden Retriever - and as you all probably know, Golden's are just the happiest, smiliest, silliest dogs in the whole world! AND HE LOVES EVERYBODY!
So for the most part, in the past 6 or so years, I personally have not run into many cranky people. They may have been a total Pickle Puss (to borrow the phrase from one of the first posters, and I LOVE it!) to the person ahead of me...but then they see Duke and I basically disappear and they want to play with Duke, pet Duke, give him attention, call over their co-workers to show them...or a number of other things!
However, the times I have my own "MONSTER MOMENTS" are when I am challenged about having Duke with me! Most people, especially now that I live outside Houston, know what a Service Dog is and don't say anything. I did have to educate the tiny town I moved into 2 1/2 years ago - town of about 10,000. No Service Dog had ever been seen in this town and I did have to break in most of the places.
The last town I lived in was in the middle-of-nowhere's-ville Nebraska. Talk about ignorant, close-minded, angry people! And I apologize to anyone who lives in Nebraska...I know they are all like that! But my particular town was awful. The Chief of Police hated me because his sister hated me because she was the only dog rescuer in town, until I moved in. I think she felt threatened? I mean, like there aren't enough dogs to save in any given town in any given state...in any given country! But she did! And the Chief never got the fact that Service Dogs were protected under a FEDERAL LAW and I was allowed to be there. Yes, it is a civil matter and if a patron refuses me service and calls the police, the police doesn't have to demand they serve me. However, most police officers will say "Yes, she is allowed to be here and if you refuse to allow her to stay...she can and WILL WIN a civil suit against you!"
Right before I moved to Texas, I was at a restaurant that I had been to 25 times before. All of a sudden, the manager-at-the-time decided they didn't want me there. 4 - yes, count them FOUR - police officers came into the restaurant while Duke was laying at my feet and I was eating and demanded that I drop my fork and leave with them immediately. I said "We have been through this, and you are all very aware that I have a right to be here!" THE PULLED THEIR GUNS ON ME AND DEMANDED I GET UP IMMEDIATELY!
They then escorted me out - one officer holding on to each arm with Duke in the middle - in the middle of the restaurant...at 6 pm on a Tuesday night or something - packed! I got into my car and bawled my head off and was not only mortified I was terrified!!!
As I was sitting there, I watched at least 20 people walk out right behind me. Each and every single person - or party - came up to me and said "I cannot believe you were treated that way. I will never come back to this restaurant and I made it clear to the manager and here is my phone number, you call me for a witness!" I received 9 phone numbers that afternoon.
My first day here in my new town, I walked into the Grocery Store. The manager-on-duty just happened to be building a display right inside the doors. He came up to me, extended his hand, gave me a Texas Greeting and said "Who's this? Are you new in town? How wonderful that you have such a great friend to help you!" I told him thank you very much, explained all about Duke and how he helps me...and he told me that if I ever had any trouble to have them call him personally, even if he wasn't working. For the next two months, didn't have a single problem.
Went back to the store one night for two things - Coke and Ice Cream (it was a bad day already) and I was accosted in one of the aisles. This manager said "You cannot bring a dog into this store. Get out now!" I said "Yes, I can...he is a Service Dog and I have been in this store more than a dozen times...Bob is aware of Duke and I" He said "Well, Bob isn't here and I want you to leave now!"
This is when I became my own Monster! I refused and said "call the police if you want me to leave". And I walked away and went on with my business. The police came while I was standing in line - you know about 8 pm where it wasn't packed, but there were only 4 lanes open and lines at each lane - and they demanded I leave. Said if I didn't leave immediately, it was going to get ugly.
I walked outside and told them the laws, etc. They didn't care. They demanded my driver's license and insurance - I wasn't even in my car! I said how can you demand that if I am not even driving?? They said get it or you will be arrested!
That ended ugly...and I left without my Coke and Ice Cream. I called the Cheif of Police the next day, told him I was here - again, after I called the first Monday I lived here so that they were aware - and he apologized, and promised me that would never happen again. He called me back 3 days later and said he had a meeting with his ENTIRE FORCE and that I would never have a problem with any of his officers again.
I went to Subway about a week later. They refused to make me a sandwich. I called the police. The SAME OFFICER who had threatened to arrest me at the Grocery Store walked in and said "They got you again huh? I will take care of it!" He got on the phone with the manager, I heard him telling him I could sue him and would win and I had my sandwich within 3 minutes...HA!
If someone walks up to me and says "You cannot bring dogs into a store, you need to leave immediately" I am instantly defensive. If they come up and ask me "Is that a Service Dog? Wow, I have never seen one in person...what does he do?" I am a Chatty Cathy and will talk their ear off! I mean really...when people say as I walk into a restaurant or grocery store "You cannot bring a dog in here!" do they think that I crawled out from under a rock yesterday??? He wears a bright red vest that says "SERVICE DOG" on it! LOL!!!
But since I normally go to the same places all the time, once I have been there, it's no longer an issue. And we are welcomed with open arms. And Duke will turn the Sourest Pickle into the Sweetest one instantly...I have even heard crying babies and walked around to find them, showed them Duke and they instantly stop! I think it's more a "OMG! Mommy...there is a dog in the store!" type of action, but at least they stopped crying! And most of the time end up laughing. He loves to give kisses to Baby Toes!! Parents have thanked me and thought Duke and I were the biggest angels...well, I know I am not but Duke is :-)
So, if anyone is even still reading this...there are some of my NIGHTMARE Customer Service stories!
As for the perfect movie? For me, one that makes me cry...a good cry...but leaves me feeling like my heart has been touched by the end. Even if I am crying my eyes out as the credits roll. But I really only have ONE "Favorite Movie" - one I can watch over and over and over and never be bored - is Gone With The Wind.
I know I am never going to welcomed here like many because I always post the longest posts I am sure no one even reads them! LOL!! But that's OK...I love it here anyway!
Happy Tuesday, Blog Buddies!
