My name? Mental.....Judge Mental
Alright I've been reading the comments on the blog and I've also been doing some very meticulous research with the expense account that NBC didn't give me and I've found out that most people commenting are really bashing the show this year. Where are the positive comments?
So far, I have to say I'm really impressed with the show. Granted, I'm on the payroll to a degree,
but there are some folks out there who are Negative Nancy's.
Like Judy, who is "too repulsed to even care" but not too repulsed to take the time to post a comment. Thanks for letting us know how you feel, now let's take a deep breath and count to 10. This is a tv show folks. It is to entertain. It's not solely based on talent, because what if all the technically best singers were the same age, the same gender and the same ethnicity? It would be boring. Don't forget, the show has an agenda as well. So let's all just sit perched high on our couches and look down our noses, and shallowly crush some dreams shall we?
I do like the way they are utilizing the judges more as mentors this year. One thing I'd like to see is the judges judging the star's performances.
Put Taylor and Trace up against the same scrutiny as the contestants.
That would be entertaining huh? I wanna see Jewel tell Trace his jeans are too tight,
good Lord I think I could see his bullet holes.
Before we get to the performances, let's all bow our collective heads and be thankful that Third Town has been voted off. At first I was giving them the benefit of the doubt that there might be more to them than just being a weird collection of vocalists and colored hair but after seeing another performance I'm think I'm more creeped out this week than I was last week.
I think it's because the bubblegum headed guy reminds me of Toddy from the Wedding Crashers.
Did you see the one guy justify the band to the judges by saying, "We all sing lead."? No you don't. Because you only performed 2 songs yet there are 3 singers? I think he meant that they are all capable of singing lead, You all CAN sing lead, but someone's got to be the front man. And if I was to Monday morning quarterback I would have rather seen Charlie Jenkins perform a second time.
First up we had Laura & Sophie doing a Judds tune. Again, great harmonies, and great vocal arrangements. I love watching these girls because they are so young and so innocent. They look like they are having a ball and their ebullience is infectious. It's like watching puppies play together. I didn't really agree with John Rich saying it was like a slumber party, because that's what they are. They are so BFF!!!!! (insert emoticons here!!!!!)
I also didn't agree with Jewel saying that they should do something new because they've been doing that song for years. So what? It's new to me and most of America so why not put forth what you know works? With that said, I still think they'll be in the final 3. And how funny was it when the one corrected the other for saying "my song" instead of "our song"? I see a rift. They'll be splitting up over "creative differences" by next week.
Speaking of the top 5, I also think Ashley Hewitt will be in there. She continually delivers solid performances and carries herself very well. Great song choice as well.
Next is the pretty boy Justin Gaston. Everytime he looks into the camera I expect his teeth to sparkle like an Orbit gum commercial.
He kind of comes across as a mimbo and I agreed with the judges that he's just going through the motions. "Phoning it in" as they say. I thought this was a better performance than last time but he still just seems to be focusing more on looks than soul. John Rich said he was "sweet", I didn't agree with that so much, but I know what he was alluding to. High marks on the song choice though with The Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah". I like when people take pop songs and countrify them. Like Jack Ingram doing "Lips of Angel" by Hinder. A great song is a great song no matter what genre. I also predict that he'll get farther in the contest than he deserves just because I think he will get a lot of the little girl's votes as a teenage heart throb.
Alyson's rendition of Every Breath You Take was the performance that I was hoping for after her rocky debut. It was redemption. I'm glad they toned down her eyes and made her more endearing as well.
Pearl Heart had a marked improvement from last week's performance. I think the judges were right on about the lead singer not carrying herself as a lead. Why don't the twin sisters dress the same and bookend her? That would help, they could be like the
.
Up next was the sailor. Not the band Sailor in case you were confused.
Because everyone knows how hard this band rocks!

"All hands on deck and batten down the hatches because Sailor is about to rock it from port to starboard!!" Do Trace and Sailor have the same pants stylist? I'm talking about Tommy Staley. I really dig this kid. He's got style, excitement. Doesn't take himself too seriously. Every week is another week he's not on the USS Kittyhawk and you can tell he's having fun. Ballsy choice to do a John Rich song which I also commend. I think he'll make it into the Top 4.
Gabe is a darkhorse for me. Cool tune to cover with CCR, and I don't mean Cross Canadian Ragweed. This is also another well rounded contestant with a good voice, style and identity. I can't write much about him, because I can't find anything wrong with him.
Next we had Shawn Mayer doing "He Stopped Loving Her Today." I will admit that she looked better this week, but what's with the crying? The only one crying after this song should have been George Jones. Here he is on the ground laughing at her song choice.

Like most people, I rely on coffee to perk me up. That's exactly what happens when Coffey hits the stage. This cat grows on me every week. I like his song choices, I like his delivery, his look. I still can't tell how "country" he is though. And I couldn't agree more with Jewel and her "vocal acrobatics" critique. There's a fine line between overkill and authenticity and I think he tiptoes it.
Lastly we had Melissa, which I'm going to be honest, I don't hear it. I don't get it. What's the point? Jewel said she has one of the better voices on the show, but I'll take a lamer singer over a better package. I will give her credit on her song choices though.
Well there we have it. Next week I'll be milling about backstage and trying to dig up some good dirt for you.
Until then, leave a message at the beep (Beep)

I'm so glad that Third Town is gone. They were driving me up the wall. They look like hip dudes, but sound like my grandpa's old country music. Leaves me scratching my head in wonderment. I thought everyone else did well, except pretty boy Justin. He was the weakest link for me. I couldn't believe Tommy's energy. Alyson's song choice was great and she nailed it. Laura and Sophie need to stop dressing alike. They need to each have their own individual style. The Bobbsey Twin thing is too cutesy and tween-like. For me, the sound of the entire show was a little muffled. I thought this last week, too. Almost like we are hearing what the singers are hearing through the monitors instead of a nicely mixed front of house sound. I don't know if there's anything the network can do about it.
I am now a Gabe fan--two weeks of solid vocals--does need to work on his stage persona a bit but I love that voice.
Nashville Star, you have officially lost me and my dad's support this season. He lives in Virginia and I live in Texas. Over the years we have watched this show and enjoyed it very much! After a show, I would call him and we would discuss it. This season, we have tried to watch, but each time we would lose interest and change the channel. You have taken out the country and replaced it with the city! The set is ugly, Rich is more of a city slicker singer and most important of all, the contestants are NOT country.
Positives> Jewel and Billy Ray
I'll check back next season
The NBC executives responsible for this mess should be taken to Nashville and strangled with George Canyon's guitar string. NBC has turned this once very fine show into a vehicle to stroke the egos of three (or at least two) country music stars who's egos shouldn't need any additional stroking. I tried watching it for almost all of two shows. By the end of the first show I had a hunch I disliked the format and halfway through the second, I knew it. No wonder NBC put this on in the summer. Run it during the real TV season and it probably would have been canceled before the finals. All the people NBC pays to promote this show won't save it, and they should save their money and quit trying. Maybe USA Network will pick it up next fall and recreate it with some integrity, honesty and respect for its audience.
For some reason, I cannot seem to send an e-mail via Outlook Express! ..... and I had written such an eloquent reply! (Or So I Thought) Ah well, .... Enjoyed your comments. I've never "blogged" before! What a hoot!!!!
So: back to the show: I'm obviously a "Negative Nellie" regarding THIS show.... I spent all my life on a working cattle ranch in Texas: I lived it, breathed it, worked it, sang it, wrote it, etc. That ought to count for something, don't ya' think? I KNOW MY COUNTRY MUSIC.
Sorry folks..... don't call it "country" or "Nashville" when it bears no resemblance to the concept. George Jones is country (I'm sure it made him cry and murder isn't legal); Think about it: Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Barbara Mandrell, Garth, Eddy, Marty, Ray, Alan Jackson, Clint... Don Williams... even some of Carrie Underwood.... Now that's country... Isn't that the point! I presume you write this blog in order to receive "feedback"... OK.... You got feedback.... Yeah, I'm getting old, but my hearing is fine; and, all last night's episode did was give me a headache! It's the truth that hurts! Sorry for NBC... they could use some hits. Don't think this one will make the cut!!!!!! Obviously opinionated, I am sincerely
"AntiSoShul " Judy
I think the people with the strong negative reactions will be replaced by people who like what NBC is doing. The show is different now. It's more like American Idol. It's less country. Some people don't like that.
Me, I can live with it if that's what it takes to make it a success. They have to get people to watch the show that aren't country diehards. Some will get hooked, and that's good. Country needs to build a bigger audience, or it will die in this new world where no one wants CDs anymore and you are no longer a captive to local country radio.
When it was on USA Network, you always knew that the winner would likely never get the push they needed to be successful. (I think Miranda Lambert's success has very little to do with the show.)
Ask your average man on the street who Buddy Jewel or Angela Hacker are. In a few weeks, at least some of the current contestants will already be more well known than either one of those former winners.
Now there's a chance that one of the contestants can make it big. And that's a reason to watch.
as a lover of old country music ya i get it too but old country music was never a big part of the industry it was a niche' now with all the influences of southern rock pop r and b its just not as mom and pop as it used to be. but, its a very american life stytle as far as lyrical themes as it has always been and it has attracted millions of teen to its hipper (so to speak) sound and production . teens that are a little more family oriented not trying to rebel against the older generation! what the hell is wrong with that!? nothing . im the biggest bill monroe hank williams fan in the world but they aint buying it ! and why should they ?have their own brand of what they called country . country has george and alan and now brad they are country to the bone . its cool to me to see all of it work traditional.pop southern rock its all good . we had 100 cowboy hat singers in the 90's from garth on down and the music got pretty mediocre as a result !
there are some amazing songs out there that are driving all the other genres to nashville to work with these writers to get some of their magic cause theyre writing real stuff , real life. so calm down .
quit saying i grew up on a ranch so im country hahaha i know country ! you dont know country .
country may mean "in the country " but it also means "of the country" its an american music style that will never lose its tradition ! i wanna know what happened to rock and roll !!! there is no good rock and roll they all wanna be country. embrace it . we will always love a great pure simply perfect country song and we still get em . and we still get a rare great country singer. but wanting to keep it the way it was is like sending the blacks to the back of the bus . enjoy this show it is fun
Well if all comments are negative, I guess you ought to listen. Just go ahead and write the eulogy for Nashville Star. There is no such thing as genre's (particularly country when it becomes the dumping ground for misplaced pop and rock musicians) in music anymore because of actions like this. I mean seriously... The Pussycat Dolls are performing on the show. How "country" can you really be after that. Why not just let Snoop Dog host it and make Kevin Federline a judge.
The caliber of talent showcased this year on Nashville Star will keep American Idol producing Country Music's stars.
This show can be manipulated, but CD sales can't!
How serious can this show be when they seek out a model, Justin Gaston, and put him on the show for eye candy only? He isn't there for our listening pleasure nor did he go through the audition process. It would be embarrassing to be a judge, have to make comments and maintain any sense of credibility.
America's Got Talent and American Idol actually find some voices that are thrilling to hear. Those voices are out there and certainly many auditioned for Nashville Star. NBC needs to rethink how it picks its cast. It needs to focus on country talent. Talented artists, singers should be involved in making the selections.
We are waiting for memorable performances....Maybe next season, if it survives.
John Rich is obviously Homophobic and is a detriment to the show which is another fun pop/country contest show. It's always great to see talented people work there way to the top. As a result his criticism is just a weak "me too" simon C takeoff. Get rid of him and keep the show.
I turned on nashville star and i got american idol. What did nbc do to this great COUNTRY music show...??? I want to hear some country music not pop music... It's almost unwatchable...
I'd really like John Rich to read this when i say that there is absolutley nothing country about this show. First of all you've got Billy Ray Cyrus lookin like a damn idiot and i think my mom has heard more country songs being performed on american idol than on this show. Hell i heard a brittany spears and Michael Jackson songs on this show tonight. Try singing some country songs on "Nashville Star". Guess it just shows you how country nashville is. But i guess it's to be expected from the guy who made up the MuzikMafia. This show sucks and John Rich is a disgrace to Texas.
This show is embarrassing. Billy
Ray Cyrus is a deer in the headlights coming back rom every break, and he's so uncomfortable. And Jewel is a country singer? Her debut country album has been in stores for 5 minutes! I feel sorry for real country fans. This show is a crap-fest.
I have been in the music industry for about 9 years. Listening tonight, I believe that the sounds system of Nashville Star REALLY needs to be worked on. Even Danity Kane sounded horrible! You could tell the sound guy has trouble finding and adjusting the levels ESPECIALLY when more than 1 person is singing... I had to change the channel every time there was a duo+. Sound has a HUGE impact on how the artists sound. Way to go sound engineer... You could have ruined a great career for a potential new duo.
Can you tell me if the songwriting week is still going to be on?!?!? On the USA network that was the week that set the stage for the winner. I think the reason for so much push back from fans of the old format is that for the most part the contestants were seasoned performers who were taking their honky tonk acts from the bar to the stage. This new format seems to be catering towards acts that need a lot more mentoring. It is not that one format is better than another - just completely different.
PS: There is absolutely NOTHING country about this show.... It makes me want to move out of NAshville... WE have enough music "trying" to be country... EVEN SNOOP DOG IS DOING A COUNTRY ALBUM!!!! WTF? So, this show WILL NOT MAKE IT unless it actually GOES country. There is no country on TV... (Unless you are on CMT or GAC) Step it up Nashville! YOu cant name a show NASHVILLE star... And American Idol has more and BETTER country music in it...

Who in the hell came up with this crap. IT"S NOT COUNTRY> Just like Keith URBAN JOHN RICH HELL EVEN JEWEl wouldn't know country if it bit them on their ass. Atleast on USA net it was more country than this crap. PULL THE PLUG
I actually like the show, do not know why they cannot stick to a country format...they will drive me away if this continues. The black guy...country...c'mon, he hasn't even been close. American Idol covers all genres, not a country show. COUNTRY...I SHOULDN'T NEED TO SHOUT! I like the judges, Billy Ray is Billy Ray. The problem is you have a bunch of people in charge of the show that don't know *%$@ about country...get rid of the city folk and you would have something. I'll give it one more week...no country...bye bye!
What is NBC thinking?! They got us country fans and then asked the contestants to sing pop. And the pro act tonight must have been for the middle school kids. You could have had me, but these judges are corny and full of themselves (except for Jewel), and this isn't my kind of music. If you were gonna offer up a country talent contest, you might want to have kept it country. Those people who don't like country didn't tune in at all. Those of us who did are put off now.
WTF is with POP night I thought everyone sucked..I voted for my favorites but on previous performances
I think this show is going down hill. First of all, the judges aren't country singers.Their music is far from country. It takes country singers to judge country music. They proved they did not know country on the first night of the show when they kicked Charlie off.John Rich was afraid of the competetion that Charlie would have given him if he had won. Could you see Charlie and John working together? I think not. Charlie was COUNTRY and John is what? Sure not country. Jewel is far from country. Gabe, Melissa, and Alyson are your country singers to pick from. The judges need to listen to some real country then they would know what Nashville Star is about and what the fans want to hear. We like George Jones.,Alan,Vince,Josh,John Anderson,John Conlee,Pasty,Loretta,Dolly, and Jean S. to name a few. Artist like these know country. Keith, Big and Rich, Jewel, Montgomery- Gentry, and alot of the new ones are far from country. Taylor Swift is more Folk than Country. Take this show back to country or rename it.Nashville is the home of Country Music not Pop-Country or what ever they call the new ones.
LOL . . . I'm not a country music fan (and LORD I had noooo idea how rabid ya'll are!), and I've never watched the show before, so . . . I'm pretty entertained by it. I think the judges actually do a really good job of being realistic and honest, but without being assholes in the process. Here's a newsflash for most of you: IT'S A FREAKIN' T.V. SHOW. Either be entertained by it, or turn it off . . . it's not brain science.

Haven't you producer people ever watched freakin' HANNAH MONTANA . . . all the charisma of algae.
I haven't watched the past seasons, so I don't have anything to compare it to... But it doesn't put me to sleep, like American Idol always has, so that's a plus.
I'm also pretty pleased by who is getting voted off. For the most part they're the people I want gone... Especially Third Town. I get the whole "make the show interesting by adding varying groups", but Third Town? Really? They were just plain annoying.
I would like to see more country that pop-country, but I did dig the country-fied stuff today. I'm hoping we get more country now, though. A little bit is cool, but if you overdo it it's going to get old. We do like hearing songs we know and love too.
being from the south, this show was REALLY bad that was NOT country judges go back to the real roots of country music and listen to what it really is befor you judge any more contestants

I've followed NS since it first came out, and I agree with everyone on here who is saying this show STINKS!! While it may not have had the potential audience on USANetwork that it does on NBC, at least it knew what kind of show it was supposed to be (country!!) there. Now, its just a poor second cousin excuse for American Idol or America's Got Talent (neither of which are on my "to watch this week" list). While I am all for country broadening out (why I like John Rich, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney), I'll bet you half of the NBC Exec's who are running this show couldn't pick George Strait out of a line up even if he was the only white guy wearing a cowboy hat!! This show is destined to fail, and I hope NBC loses big time bucks on it---I just hope it doesn't torpedo it so bad that USA or CMT or some other network that knows and understands country wont be able to pick up the pieces and fix it.
this is the way it is
It used to be called CW or Country & Western Music. The 1st contestent ya'll booted was just that. Charlie was good, what were you thinking? Jeff, John, and Billy Ray need to go to John's bar and have a pissing contest and let Jewel do the judging! This could be a good show if NBC would just take out the trash.
all you purists listen up its all pop even the country back in the day was pop . johnny cash was pop !
he was the most supreme example of a guy recording pop songs his whole career and making them his own
including his last "hurt" by trent reznor please remember when all this country came down from the hills and left its bluegrass and gospel roots people were pissed and said it was a sell out . conway twitty was a rock and roller big time and turned country cause it was so popular same with charlie rich and many many others this is nothing new , all you so called pure country fans read some books . you build these traditions in sand sometimes.country western ? movie stars singing on horses roy and dale , gene autry
?? it was show biz. country is as country as it has ever been . alan, george theyre keepin it simple
but just like bluegrass and gospel turned in to country in the 30's
country , pop and southern rock, are turning it into another american original sound that reflects our culture.
I would just like to thank NBC for officially tearing upart, what was once a very good show. This is nothing more than the NBC version of "American Idol" and it shouldn't be, I used to love this show because it was couutry. I hate to tell NBC, the closest thing country you have on the show this year is JEWEL!! She might have started in pop, but the girl was raised in the country. So with that being said, where are the people on the show that would spend there saturday on a four wheeler down in the bottoms or sitting on the tail gate of a truck around a bonfire with a guitar and a bunch or thier friends singing some old Hank, Waylon, Willie, Merle, George, Conway, Charlie Pride, The Man in Black, Patsy Cline, Alabama, Vern Gosdin, John Connely, Earl Thomas Connely, or Keith Whitley? The contestants on this show would never dream of doing something like that, they would be to scared they would either break a nail or get dirty. And in the famous words of D. A. C. If that aint country I'll kiss your A** !!!!!!!!!!! There is an old saying, "you can take the folks out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the folks" just like you can't but the country in the folks you have to raised that way!! And the contestants on this show is nothing but a bunch of posers!!! See what happens when Carrie Underwood wins American Idol, it is truley ashamed that country has gone so pop. I guess NBC is trying to help it along. " to country " it is a Brad Pailey song, maybe the producers at NBC need to look this song up and give it a listen!!
This is the first season I've really paid much attention to Nashville Star, mainly because it's the first time I've actually been able to find it on my TV and I'm going to disagree with the negative commenters. I'm probably younger than most of you (19) so I have a little different perspective.
It seems some of you want to put country music in a tiny little box where it can't touch any other style. Some of the most popular country artists are more pop than country (Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, etc.). I happen to like Coffey a lot, and some complain that he sounds too much like R&B. I happen to like that, because years ago they were combined into some great music. Back then it was known as rock or rockabilly, but if the same music came out today, it would be considered country.
There is room in country for influences from other genres.
Has anyone ever been to Nashville? I lived there for more than a few years and John Rich runs that town. He isn't anti-country and he doesn't need his ears fixed. He knows how to handpick a star. His comments are real and he's not ripping off Simon C. In other news- the music snobs have got to stop... this is a "country music" show as these people WANT to be country music artists. that group of people are actually unique. they don't want to write lyrics to a beatbox just to make Top 40 radio. the judges can discover a country music star through non-country music as some of them have been singing... open your minds and quit whining. i love the show. it's come a long way. the closer to american idol it gets the more true talent they will find. i always thought that there were more contestants that sucked than were actually tolerable in past seasons. this season rocks!
I agree. I dig the show alot. @ least we have something that represents Us Country folk on tv.
I agree this show is very disappointing this year. I dislike John Rich even more now. Billy Ray seem uncomfortable. This is I believe the third week and I opted to watch the Bachlorette for the first hour, needless to say I missed nothing.
NBC please cancel this show.
It was so frustrating to watch last year because you knew two things early on: One of the Hackers was going to win, and neither one of them was ever going to be a star in today's country music biz. Hence: NS last year was a total waste of time.
Face it, the Hackers don't fit the mold that country radio seeks these days. Their rejection was inevitable.
Also, the show lost a great deal of credibility when it failed to make a star out of Chris Young, who DOES fit the mold that country radio craves. If NS couldn't make a star out of Chris Young, what hope was there for Angela Hacker? The show likely would have been canceled soon enough.
So NBC acquired the rights to the name and the concept, overhauled it and took a gamble.
Some people like it, and some people hate it.
Heck, to me this is just a show, and I don't intend to get worked up over it no matter what.
Either I'll watch the show or I won't. But so far, I like NS a whole lot better than last year.
I wonder if any of the previous commentators -- especially those who trash some contestants and praise others (for whatever reasons) -- know what musical "intonation" is? Much less, hear it. Intonation is probably the most necessary ingredient required to make a song sound good. (It's what Jewel refers to when she says that a performance sounded "pitchy.") Recording engineers hate having to splice the be-jez-us out of a song to make it sound right. It wastes expensive studio recording time.
There's only one NS contestant with whom I can relax and enjoy in this department: Gabe. (Nashville record execs must be drooling over the prospects of tapping the burgeoning Hispanic market.)
As for the show itself: the artifice is evident but it's entertaining and suspenseful enough. (Does a perfect format for this kind of stuff exist anywhere?)
My husband and I have watched Nashville Star since it first came on. It seems each season gets worse. This season, by far, is the worst! It's bad enough that we may not even watch it to the end! The contestants aren't the same caliber as contestants on previous seasons--they're not even in the same ball park! And, one female contestant sang "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey and was told how well she did. Then Coffey sand "Hey Good Lookin'" and "Take Me Home Country Roads" and Tommy Stanley sang "God Bless the Broken Road" and "Tiny Dancer" and were told that they weren't country! There aren't many performers on this show that ARE doing country music! This show doesn't even keep us entertained anymore. I think we'll just delete it from our DVR and forget about any future seasons of Nashville Star since "Nashville" doesn't seem to mean country any more!
This show sucks! I have not missed a season of nashville star but this season is terrible. John Rich is the only honest judge they have. Billy Ray stinks. Lori and Sofie are terrible, Coffey has no talent and the girl that got voted off last week actually had talent but needed a bit more work, but shes gone and Coffey and lori and sofie are still in it. What a joke. NBC has ruined this show. I used to look forward to each week during previous seasons, but now I have a hard time getting thru each episode. I dont imaging they will have another season after this one.
Lets get real, no one on this show this year will ever have a career, and Rich might not have a career after this either. Besides Jewel and Steele and Billy already dont, but dont take down poor Rich, now he has his own Find a Star show at 12th and Porter, oh Jesus... Will the legendary Jewel be in attendance.
