Thanks & Goodnight

I'm going to sign off for the moment because it's almost 9pm here in California and I'm looking forward to watching the premiere on the air. Thanks so much for all your comments, it means the world to me that people enjoy the show.

I think we have a lot of spectacular episodes coming up. If you're a faithful viewer of Medium, you know our episodes are difficult to summarize and/or tease. But I promise we will continue to zig, zag and tell good stories. Sorry it took so long for us to get started this year, but we're back and we're not going anywhere!

Another 3-D Episode?

I am hoping to do another 3-D episode this season. I'd like the entire episode to be in 3-D this time. The hard part is finding a sponsor to pay for and distribute glasses throughout the country. If anyone out there has Bill Gates phone number, please feel free to post it here.

The show will be on at 10pm, Wednesday nights.

Next week, we have a particularly exciting episode called "Be Kind, Rewind." Kind of a run-of-the-mill episode, Allison loses her legs in a car accident. Hope you tune-in.

Network Relations

To respond to FourTeller...

For the most part, I feel I have a terrific relationship with NBC. There is a lot of give and take and clearly the success of the series is a function of the successful working relationship we enjoy. I consider a lot of the people at the network to be friends and know that they are as passionate about the show as I am. Working as fast as we do, and when you juggle as many shows as a network executive must, there are inevitable disagreements and disappointments, but they are few and far between.

Ideas...Inspirations...

On "Medium," stories come from everywhere. When we first started the series a great deal of what we did was inspired by things that actually happened to the real Allison DuBois. Allison toils largely in the judicial system, which churns rather slowly and doesn't actually provide enough fodder for 22 episodes a year. I have chastised her about this on numerous occasions! The result is that we, particularly in the last year and a half, get most of our ideas from the minds of writers. The inspiration for any given show is hard to pin down.

Tonight's episode was the result of my continuing belief that animation would be a wonderful way to depict dreams. Javier Grillo-Marxuach came up with the skeleton for the story. At the same time, Rene Echevarria another executive on the show became convinced that there was a great story in an old lover of Allison's arriving on her doorstep at the moment of his death. At the same time, I was developing a story that revolved around the idea of four separate dreams. And at THAT very moment Kevin Reilly at NBC was asking if there was something special we could do to start our third season. In a kind of "Eureka!" moment, we realized that by putting all these elements together we could create an ambitious, and I hope satisfying, two-hour story.l

So many of you are writing to say how much you enjoyed Bridget tonight. It's very gratifying to hear that.
Realistic Family Scenes

Thank you for all the kind comments about our depiction of the DuBois Family. I have always felt very strongly that the only way to make this fantastic premise in which a woman can see the dead, sense the future and sometimes read minds believable... was to surround her with as normal, at times mundane, domestic life as possible. It was in the early days of the show a point of some contention because there wasn't much else like it on television. It has since become the hallmark of the show and I take great pride in that. I think it's a tribute to the actors, and I include our extraordinary child actors in this, that people sense such a large degree of realism in the family scenes.

Dream Guest Star

Yes, actually! I've approached Bruce Willis a couple of times. Our schedules have never dove-tailed properly. He still wants to do it and we very much want to have him. I'm hoping sometime in the near future to make that happen. I would also love to have, although I've never discussed it with him, my friend Michael Keaton do the show. There is something about his intensity and Patricia's intensity together that makes great sense to me. I also have a secret little story arc in my head that I would love to do with Emma Thompson. If anyone knows Emma Thompson...please mention this to her!

Thanks for your kind words about the minivan sequence. It was very much a collaborative effort. I can't begin to name all the people who contributed to it. Aaron Lipstadt, who directed the episode, had a strong point of view about how to execute it. Larry Teng, who is a producer on the show and heads up post-production, also contributed mightily. Sondra Watanabe edited the show and this sequence with particular skill.

The Real-Life Allison

I consult with Allison less and less as the series has gone on. She's gotten busier and so have we. I consider her a friend and wish we had the opportunity to speak more often. The idea of a cameo is an interesting one. Wouldn't surprise me if at some point it happened.

My sense about the real-life Allison is that her "gift" is pretty much a way of life. Not something she can pick and choose to experience. I find that one of the most fascinating aspects about her. It's at once a gift and a curse. It certainly colors the way one sees the world. When I first met her I was struck by the fact that she seemed to have this radio in her head that only played news and songs about death. Yet she somehow managed to bring up children and have a healthy marriage, despite the dark lense that she views life through. I find that extraordinary.
