Visual Style of Show
We've been fortunate over the years to have a cadre of extraordinary directors, starting with John Patterson on the pilot, through a list of directors that are literally world class. I thank them all. Luckily, it's the one thing I've never had any desire to do. It's incredibly difficult and you have to get up very early in the morning every day.

Why is everything in the dark now? I have had to stop watching all of the Law & Order programs because of this - how unrealistic - what is the purpose??
Any plans to write a realistic script anytime soon? Perhaps one where the killer isn't the rich white guy?
We too, enjoy the gritty look.
Mr. Wolf: Question: The visual thing for NYC and the surrounding is fun to see and to know what goes on there from time to time. However, are you going to do any of the episodes in the future to crossover to DC area, for example? You did that with Homicide: Life on the Streets which was based on Baltimore Maryland.
It would be interesting for Law & Order to come to the DC area and do a series episode or 2 there to have the audience get a feel for what goes on in other cities, besides in NYC.
Yea I agree, the first seasons were more gritty and I prefer that. But the visual style is still great now. It's soo cool watching the show after visting New York.
yes, forget that getting up early thing...much more creative late at night
I prefer the gritty look of the first few seasons.
