Late Night Characters or bits
Dear Irish guy,It's a scientific fact that most whackings take place between the hours of 11:30 PM and 12:30PM across all time zones. It has come to my attention that many people in this line of work (although I must emphasize that I have absolutely NO firsthand knowledge of this) are very displeased that the Italian guy that used to do your show has been replaced by a Mick...
Conan O'Brien
I want to say I am glad that your taking over the Tonight show on NBC television.ItNice to have a young youthful up to date person on the Tonight show and up to dateon music and youthful culture...

Andy, You're A Star!

Posted March 02, 11:07 AM

Why hello there, you fine, good looking people. How are ya? It seems like one whole entire week since we saw each other last! It's so hard to believe that it was only - wait, it WAS a week. I forgot. Sorry. Um... How was your week?

First off, I'd like to congratulate everyone at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon... And wish them the very best of luck on their debut this evening!! If you're like me, you'll be tuning in at 12:35 to check out the very exciting new face of Late Night! Good luck, guys. Do us proud.

This past week for me has been pretty awesome - and one MAJOR reason for that is because of a little piece of news that I'm sure you all heard about: SWEET SWEET ANDY RICHTER WILL BE OUR ANNOUNCER ON THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O'BRIEN!!! How great is that?! I'll tell you: MUCHO great! I never actually got to work with Andy - I started about a year after he left - but I met him shortly after I started, and he's always known my name and treated me as a good friend... And what more can you ask of someone? I mean, besides loaning me an extra 20 to support my crippling scratch off lottery habit? Exactly.

At any rate, as everyone who watched almost any clip package of the last two weeks of Late Night knows, Andy Richter has been an important (and hilarious) part of the Late Night with Conan O'Brien family for a very long time, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that we couldn't be happier that he will be joining us out in Los Angeles!! Andy's the best! Plus, there's a famous story of Andy hitting two home runs against CBS News during a certain softball game at Yankee Stadium years ago... But that's a story I'll save for another time. PS - Let it burn, suckas.

As for me, things are starting to shift into high gear. Case in point: I am currently writing this from a hotel room in the shadow of Universal Studios out here in LA...

And I have to say, this whole "moving" thing is starting to feel pretty real. I've been out here since Wednesday night, catching up with some West Coast friends and hunting for a the perfect apartment... Or as I like to think of it, "Big Bley's West Coast base of operations for World Domination"!!!! (Or as the girl I met in a bar calls it, "Your West Coast lair of pathetic Xbox playing and crying yourself to sleep every night. Also, this place smells like feet. Call me a cab."). Seriously though, I found a really great place, and I'm hoping to sign the lease tomorrow! Also seriously, it's more like an armpit smell. OH NEW YORK, I WILL ALWAYS KEEP A PIECE OF YOU IN MY HEART. And my nose, apparently.

Public humiliations aside, I'm learning a lot about Los Angeles - even when just looking for an apartment! For instance: A lot (most) of the places out here don't come with refrigerators. I know! It's totally weird and crazy - who moves out and takes their fridge with them? I can't tell you how many apartments I've seen where I walk into the kitchen and see a giant hole where the icebox should sit. It's like someone's pulled a giant tooth out of the apartment. It's crazy! I'm almost expecting to walk into one of these bathrooms and see a missing toilet... But hey, maybe that's a trend I'll start when I move out of my apartment in New York!

MAN my roommates would be upset.

In other news, last night I hung out with my former co-worker (and former Late Night Podcast co-host) Grace Parra! She's doing great, and says hello to all you fine Party People... She also apologies for taking me to what was possibly the douchiest bar in LA (okay, she didn't really say that second thing but she should have because holy crap that place was Zzzztown). I still had a great time, though. Thanks, Grace!

Finally, I wish I had pictures of the new studio for you guys this week, but no dice. Actually, I tried to get onto the lot yesterday, and I learned one crucial fact about our new home: THE LOT IS CLOSED ON SUNDAYS!! Crazy! Not being able to get into work on the weekends is going to take some getting used to... After all, 30 Rock is open 25/8 366 because of the NBC News department! So if there's no news presence on the lot in LA, I guess there's no reason for the studio to be open on the weekends! Maybe I'll have to dig a tunnel or something. Y'know; just in case I forget my iPod. Daddy NEEDS his jambox at all times, sugarsnap. You understand.

Soooooo... That'll about do it for this week! I'm headed back into the office tomorrow for the next couple days to finish packing up and moving out, so you might want to keep an eye on my Twitter - I'm feeling an Underground movie coming on later this week! Stay tuned, guys!!

« Back to Blog

I totally feel you about the fridge thing. And how many more difficult things are there to move than fridges and couches? Give me a break. Glad to hear you made it in one piece, and welcome to L.A!

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Seriously!! I am also really regretting having a Grand Piano collection.... STUPID, BLEY. STUPID.

Hey Aaron!
Im just fine, how are you?
Wow it sounds like you had an awesome week! Mine wasen't that good, but I survied. The only problem was that I had this english accent on my head and Im not even english or american but I do watch Russell brands dvd's so I have myself to blame really.

I read about Andy being the new announcer and I thought it was just a rumor, but sence it cleary isen't I can just say that im happy for you!

Im totally addicted to mine ipod to! Can't go anywhere without it and I will be looking forward to the Underground movie :)

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: I'm good, I'm good... Quietly freaking out a bit, but good! How are Russell Brand's DVDs? I think that dude is hilarious!

Yeah, I am a total music nerd (among other nerdly addictions), so I hardly ever go anywhere without my iPod! I used to be the guy who would take books of CDs with him on trips, so Apple really changed my life!

Wow, good news just keeps coming, eh? Andy the Announcer, muy interesante y muy awesome! Is he working on his voice overs? hahahahaha! This is sincerely great that he's coming back to be with Conan, they were always a great team and shared some amazing times. Maybe having the Tonight Show won't be so bad after all.

No refrigerators? Another thing to support the cliche "America is fat", I mean, when we're becoming protective over our refrigerators, I guess there's no room to hide.

I'm so glad Grace is doing well! How's her writing class coming?

Closed on the weekends? That's really strange, you'd think it could just be open for staff to get work done. Very lazy in LA :P

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: True dat!! Luckily, I found a place with a fridge, so I can continue stuffing my fat mug with as much food as possible!! *whew*

Grace is doing great! She's waiting to hear if she's gonna be staffed on a show or not... Fingers crossed!!!

Congrats on the apartment! No turning back now. Also, please don't get a fake tan and frosted tips. Thanks. The same goes for COB...although, on second thought, that would make for a memorable first episode.

Why are you so eager to work on weekends? Pure, undying love for the show?

I think it's awesome that Andy will be the announcer, but what will become of Joel?

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks duder! And I'ver already got frosted tips! Maybe I'll get UNfrosted tips for my frosted hair...

Hope you are happy in your new digs! I had a good feeling about Andy making a comeback. I love him.

When I lived in Cali I was also surprised that the fridge was gone! Who does that?!? Also almost all of the apartments and houses had fireplaces. And here in Chicago, they don't. Who needs it more? I ask!

Listen, the comments back are great. But don't go stressing. You kinda have a lot on your plate right now. I'm sure I can speak for the fellow Bley Buccaneers when I say, it's all good. Catch up when you can, or don't. We'll love ya like a good case of loin lobsters from LA, anyhow.

P.S. sorry if you get this more than once the site went wonky for a sec.

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Loin Lobsters!? That sounds either arousing or painful! I'm trying to keep a handle on the comments as we go along so they'll be more manageable when I get back into the office! Thanks for understanding, though. You know how I live to stress myself out. ;)

I was sick as a dog the last week so reading your Tweets and lying in the bed were my hobbies. It's unbelievable how fast the time goes by. I don't even realize that the show really ended because they are showing reruns and it feels like any break in the past.
So great to get Andy back. He'll bring a nice touch to the show. Who knows, maybe he'll be the next dadaistic character, if he already isn't.
I have the same "Ipod need" as you do. It's impossible to survive without it. I'm such a music junkie that I have to have music at all times with me.

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Nice! I'll try to make the tweets more interesting, then! ;)

Will you please sneak me to LA in your refrigerator? It seems pretty fool-proof to me.

************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Sure! I hope you like suffocation!

Hey Bley! I'm excited to see how Jimmy will do but I will be watching Late Night tonight with a heavy heart. It's only been two weeks....ahhh!!! way too many more to go! I'm so glad that you're still blogging, otherwise I don't know what I'd do with myself! Glad you found a place in LA.
Oh, and Andy as the announcer?!?!? Pure genious. Except I'll miss skits with Joel. But there may be some Conan/announcer sketches with Andy, right? YAY!
Well have a good week, and thanks for getting to these comments! :)
-Julie

************************************************************
Aaron Responds: I would think so!! Give Jimmy a chance... he's a funny dude!

Thanks for the update, Bley. Yeah, fantastic news about Andy! It'll be great to see him back on the show. Poor Joel. Hopefully he'll find another gig.

Can't believe you pulled out the word "icebox." Sweet! What are you, from the 50's?? ;)

Glad you found a place in L.A.! Happy packing, dudebro!

************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You're welcome! And I'm not from the 50's... I just dig words, I guess?!??

I discovered last week while I was in L.A., that everything TRULY cool in that vast city is within a short 12 block radius in Hollywood: UCB, Second City, The Hotel Cafe, I.O. West, a Pinkberry, the Sunset-Gower Studios (where they film "Heroes" and "Parks and Recreation", amongst other shows), cafs where you see David Cross hanging out, a Dennys, and the Metro station on Hollywood & Vine that can get you to the few other places of importance (like the Universal Studios lot) quickly and easily.

Sure, you've got your Santa Monicas and your Disneylands and your Glendale Gallerias, but if I ever move to L.A. (and there have been 2 points in my life where I thought I might), that's the area I'd have to live in.

************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Totally! I don't think I live around there, but it sure sounds cool. ;)
