Dear Irish guy,It's a scientific fact that most whackings take place between the hours of 11:30 PM and 12:30PM across all time zones. It has come to my attention that many people in this line of work (although I must emphasize that I have absolutely NO firsthand knowledge of this) are very displeased that the Italian guy that used to do your show has been replaced by a Mick...

Through the Looking Glass!

Posted February 23, 04:32 PM

Howdy y'all! It's the Monday after the last show... And it STILL doesn't seem like Friday really happened!!

The office today was full of people talking about the party Friday night, discussing the pros and cons of all the different LA neighborhoods they're about to move to, and packing the rest of their offices up! I made a little Underground video about the proper way to pack up your desk, if the need ever arises. We're all just coming down from a crazy last week, and trying to process it all. It's still such a weird feeling, thinking about it being all over!! Everyone is happy and excited about what's to come, though. Lots of fooling around in the office today... I mean, it certainly helps that we have no show to do tonight!

As I mentioned on Friday, I will continue to update this here blog every Monday throughout our transition to LA and our transformation into the very exciting Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien... And today's post is all about PICTURES.

First off, let me hit you with something hilarious that happened on Friday but I didn't have time to write about: The people in the building across 49th street put up this sign on Friday afternoon:
message1.jpg

Hilarious, right? Well, Conan responded with this message:
messageus.jpg

Nonplussed, a little later they hit us with THIS little doozy:
message2.jpg

Oh, jokes!! Maybe if it had been warmer we could've broken out our "Late Night Waterballoon Slingshot" or something. As it ended up, we still get to have the last laugh - because we've all seen the guy over on that side of the street who sits in his office and picks his nose all day!!! Ha ha ha - dude, invest in some blinds or something! Jeez!

And now... As promised... A couple pics from the last show and the wrap party:

backstage.jpg

This is what it was like in the hallway during the last show! It was totally packed with people from the show - both past and present - and we all laughed and cried and clapped and took pictures of one another!! It was like Mardi Gras, but with less beads. And less parade floats. And less - okay, it wasn't really at all like Mardi Gras. But it was awesome!

Backstage2.jpg
Here, I am documenting Emily Copenhaver's terrible picture taking skills. (Let It Burn, Copes!)

wrap1.jpg
Here's a pic from our tremendous wrap party!! It was held in 8H, aka the SNL studios, which made for quite a dramatic setting!

wrap3.jpg
The food was incredible, and of course, there were some delicious... Uh, BEVERAGES present, heh heh...

wrap2.jpg
All in all, it was the perfect end to an amazing show. Just a super fun, classy, chilled out party... I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we all had a FANTASTIC time!!! Thanks NBC! It was a great send off!!

...And that will just about do it for this week's blog!! Remember to come on back next Monday for another sweet "Late Night to Tonight Show" update! I'll be responding to comments on and off throughout the week, and I'll also be twittering during the week as well (I'm headed out to LA on Wednesday for the weekend - so hopefully we'll have some fun). Otherwise, I'll see you all next Monday!! Take care!

« Back to Blog

Best of luck with the packing Aaron. I'm looking forward to the weekly updates. I never got to see the show in NY and sadly ill be there in 3 weeks. I'm from LA though, and I can't wait till june. Speaking of LA, if you want any recommendations of things to do or places to eat for this weekend, i'd be happy to make some suggestions.

Man with all of Conan's guitars, his office must have looked like Nigel Tufnel's guitar collection from Spinal Tap.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, Bro! I am ALWAYS a fan of suggestions of things to do and see in LA. I know nothing right now. NOTHING.

And that dude does have a lot of guitars... But I feel like many of them are novelty guitars that were given to him that don't work right. I could be wrong about that.

Haha those window messages are amazing! I'd be super psyched if Conan responded to me. Those lucky bastards! How close are the buildings in New York? Like did you have to go and get binoculars to see the message or could you read it clearly? The nose picking thing reminds me of Ugly Naked Guy from Friends. Hahaaaa good times. =]

Judging from those pictures and the tweets you sent out all night, it looks like you had a great night! Have fun in LA on Wednesday!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: I know! I wish we had a waterballoon slingshot... for MAXIMUM message effectiveness. We could read the signs clearly - as clearly as we could see the guy who always picks his nose! The buildings are close.

It's my first official comment on the Tonight Show Transition Blog!!! YAY!!! I loved Friday's show. Thanks keeping us updated every Monday and getting to all the comments from last week. Also, thanks for the awesome pics. Haha I love how Conan responded on the window.
Ok...well all for now!
--Julie

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: YOU KNNNNOOOOOW IIIIIT.

You're very welcome!! I hope I don't fail you with the Monday thing. BE GENTLE.

Those signs are brilliant! Love how they just gave up on one try "Whatevs", haha, nice going "across the street building" :P

Speaking of the Late Night Underground, I understand the blog and twitter are staying, and will eventually transition over to "The Tonight Show", but what about LNUG? Are you going to keep it the way it is and change the background? Get a completely different site and just leave the Underground for Late Night memories? Do a big memory slash and delete everything and put all new stuff up (NEVER! Please, God, no!)?

I just hope whatever happens the Underground can be left alone with all the Late Night clips, that's like a memento of the past now :'( Plus, Writers strike memories...

Oh, and are the podcasts continuing through the transition or did you mean in general, as in, once the Tonight show starts, podcasts will resume?

Sorry to bombard you with questions, Bley, but the absence of Conan leaves my wandering mind rambling and thinking, worrying and sulking. Bare with me :D

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: There was one later that just said "F".

The podcasts will probably continue out West, but not before then - all my equipment had to be given back to our sound peeps when the show ended. The Underground will be left alone for now; hopefully archived for later. I'm gonna try to get some sort of Tonight Show thing going at some point!

Thanks for the blog, Bley! I've been feeling sad and empty since Friday--feeling like I lost family or something--so this really helped. Have a safe and fun trip to L.A.!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You're welcome! Just wait, friend... Just wait.

Hey, sort of unrelated but seeing that room full of guitars made me remember when Conan got his rockabilly groove on and covered "Hard Headed Woman, "Blue Moon of Kentucky", etc... Do you have any idea where I could get his covers of these or video clips of them? He did a damn good job!

Thanks

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Hmm... Not sure. I think we had to take them down due to music issues.

Aaron,
I love the pictures. The window messages are my favorites!

What you're doing - the podcast, videos, blogging, all the interweb things, photography (You're good at it) - is what I am learning as the "future of journalism". I want to thank you for providing all of these examples of good journalism! I am going to learn about photography, maintain my website, and make a ton of videos!! And when I get back to school after my internship, I plan on getting way more involved with my school's paper and TV station!

I'm just really excited to be able to truly see the importance of all these skills!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: HA HA HA. The future of journalism... Or the PRESENT OF IDIOCY?! At any rate, I'm glad I can be a positive role model for something other than hurting oneself by tripping up the stairs.

Instead of living in a bunch of different neighborhoods, you should get one big giant mansion somewhere nice.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Yeah... That's a terrible idea. For instance; Chillemi has a baby, and I drink beer in the shower.

How do you feel about Andy Richter being the new announcer??

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: I feel extremely excited and pumped! I think Andy not only is a great guy, but really brought a lot to Late Night when he was there... The character he played really opens up a lot of comedy possibilities we wouldn't have otherwise.

I'm so glad that Andy is in board for the Tonight Show! It's like a bonus prize or something. My husband and I were lucky enough to attend the Monday taping with Bob Saget, and even though we didn't get part of the set :), it was literally the most awesome experience! Can't wait for the Tonight Show- and I'm so excited that you'll be blogging throughout the "transition!" Good luck with LA man, I don't know how you guys can bear leaving New York!

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: I know! It's like when you get a snack out of a machine and two fall out!! Bonus jellybeans and all that!! I'm so glad you made it to one of our last shows!! Hopefully you can come out and be a part of one of our first West Coast ones!!

So no Joel in L.A.?!?! What's he gonna do?

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Sadly, no. I'm not sure what Joel will do - I know that he does have gigs announcing things such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, so I'm sure he'll be all right! We'll all miss him, though...

I just read that Andy Richter will become the Tonight Show announcer, which is awesome, but what's gonna happen to Joel Goddard?

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Yes!! We're all very excited about Andy, but understandably sad about Joel... I'm not sure what Joel's plans are! I know that he's always had other announcing gigs going on, so maybe he'll just continue on with those?

I looooove the sign messages posted in the windows. Hilarious! It was heartbreaking to see Late Night with Conan O'Brien come to an end, but now I'm looking forward to The Tonight Show. I'd love to see who else from the Late Night cast is joining Conan in L.A. Can't wait for next week's post. I wish you all smooth transitions to my coast. :)

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Ha ha ha!! Awesome, right? That was a pretty cool thing of them to do!! You just can't get that kind of communication out in LA - the buildings are too far apart!!

Aaron Scott Bleyaert!!
LOL, I love the little window messages. Instead of 'WHATEVS' I would have put "TAKE ME WITH YOU!!" (:
And you know what we never got to see? Conan's automatic closing office door! :o Any chances of a final video of that before you guys leave 30 Rock??
Okay, well, I'll let you continue updating these comments!!
Take care everyone, hope to see you all coming out to LA!!

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: HA HA HA. Sorry about never getting the office door video, but I have a hunch that he'll have that in LA, too - him and Jeff both seemed to really like using it!! ;)

Those window photos are hilarious! Thank you so much for sharing this last day with us. I can't wait to try to get tickets for a show in LA :D
ps. any entry-level job openings for a soon-to-be college graduate?
lol.

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: You're very welcome! Thanks for taking the time to come and read about it, lety!

I've actually had a lot of people ask me about Jobs... I have no idea what the status of any of that is. I don't know if we're hiring, or have already hired everyone! I'll probably know more when I get into the office on the 23rd.

Of course I'll continue reading your blog! It'll be excellent. Also I hope you received my Facebook message.

Is it true that Andy Richter will be the announcer of The Tonight Show? What is happening to creepy old Joel Godard? Oh well, Andy is still just as awesome.

When do you guys have to move out entirely from 30 Rock? Also, if you could, post pictures of the slow destruction of Studio 6A since it would be interesting to see what it looks like stripped out of its decor.

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Awesome!! I'm glad to hear it!! Yes, it is true that Andy is gonna be the announcer - we're all really excited!! I'm not sure what Joel's plans are, but I wish him all the best. Joel is a super , SUPER nice guy, and extremely talented... I'm sure he'll be fine. ;)

Our 30 Rock offices are technically open until March 20th, but almost everyone is already out of there. It's a ghost town up in that piece! I made a sweet video of what the Studio currently looks like over on The Late Night Underground... Head on over and check it out!!!

Hi Aaron!!

Great pics!!!

I just heard about Andy!!! I am so thrilled!!! It is going to be awesome. Lke I alway say Conan and Andy together, the world is a better place!!!! I will miss Joel, though. Any chance he might come and visit for old times sake??

How's your week going so far?? Going through Late Night withdrawal yet??

Muah!!

Kat

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Hey Kat!! I sure hope Joel comes out to visit - he's a great guy, and I'm really gonna miss him!

I am definitely going through Late Night withdrawal - I'm also going through BED withdrawal, because I had to ship my bed out West and it takes a week... So I've been painfully trying to sleep on my roommates' couch! It sucks mucho hard.

So Bley are you moving too? I signed the petition so I hope that helped!
I was blessed to be in the audience for the last show.
I got to meet one of my hero's Mr. Stack and Pierre was sweet enough to come down to the lobby during the busy day and sign a pic for my daughter.
Everyone was SO nice! And your sis is amazing too.
One thing I'm STILL curious about, why was Schmigel taking so much footage of the audience during the show?
It was a bittersweet evening. I cried (happy and sad tears) from Friday all the way on the flight home Saturday, was okay Sunday, Monday night about 11:00 it REALLY hit me, it's over...till June annnnnddd more tears.
I really hope you are making the move Bley. You do such a great job!
OH- and just saw the news yesterday about Andy!! Sweet!

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, GladGirl!! I am definitely moving with the show - I already have a place out in LA, and am moving out there the day after tomorrow!! Things are getting real.

Pierre and Stack are super nice, and that's awesome you got to meet them! I'm not sure why Smigel was shooting footage of the audience... Maybe he just wanted to immortalize it or something?!

Hey, Aaron! I heard that Andy Richter will be the announcer for the Tonight Show. What happened to Joel? Is he coming with you guys?

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: As far as I know Joel is not coming with us. ;( We'll miss him... He was a hilarious addition to our show. I'm super pumped about Andy, though! I never got to work with him, and am really looking forward to it!

Good luck to all of you with the move!

Also, it's stuff like this that will make me dearly miss the show being shot in NYC. Aside from LA being a giant sprawling suburbia of death, any communication between neighbors would more likely be a middle finger instead of a joke sign. Don't let LA change you guys, John Mayer wasn't kidding when he said it could turn you into a douche.

I didn't get the chance to say it in previous blogs, but on another note, I wanted to thank you guys for such an amazing run. I came to a taping last May, and it was one of the coolest experiences ever. Everyone I talked to, from Conan, to Brian McCann, down to the NBC pages, were the kindest and most hospitable people around. I regret that I can't come see you in NYC again, but you bet I'll be back for another show in LA one day.

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Don't worry, Daniel - we're ALREADY a bunch of douches, so LA can't change us too much! I'm happy to at least got to experience Late Night in all it's glory while it was still around - and I hope you'll follow through and come see us out in LA!!

Hey Aaron,
I've really enjoyed the blog and I'm glad that you're going to keep doing it for the Tonight Show! It's always fun to find out some of the backstage scoop. One quick question, do you know who to get in touch with regarding internships on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien? Good luck with the move to LA!

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, man! I'll try to keep all the plates spinning during the transition so you guys can see how a show comes together from teh ground up!

I'm not sure about the internship thing yet, but I should know more when I get out there. I'll definitely let you all know!

I love your show and my sister does too. She told me a story that once while she was sleeping, the tv was on and she was laughing in her sleep, your show was on.

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Ha ha!!! That's awesome!! Our show is so trippy as it is, I can only imagine how much more insane it must've been if she was listening to it while dreaming...

'pa4jw/rzhksdx.,mg/eyj

my feelings in a nutshell.

word.

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Word. ;)

well my question is, and this kind of upset me and my friend..infuriated...rioted..well maybe not the 2nd two haha. but we where wondering but will the Max Wheinburg 7 and Announcer Joel be following Conan on the move to the tonight show also? that will extremely suck if they dont go, we really hope they go with Conan.

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: RIOTED?!?? Oh brother! The answer is that the MW7 will be going, but sadly Joel will not. Instead, we are getting a new announcer... BY THE NAME OF ANDY RICHTER!!! That's cool, right?!

when will the tickets for the first Los Angeles show be available? :)

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Great question! I have no idea. I will definitely let you guys know as soon as I find out, though.

I am 27 years old, and I've been watching Conan since I was in Middle School. I used to pretend to go to bed so I wouldn't get in trouble for staying up until 1:30am so I could watch his show. I was addicted then, and still am. I guess I should blame him for missing so much school:) From the PimpBot to the driving desk, to his Year 2000 and If They Made It bits, and with or without Andy, Triumph, or Max, I loved watching his show and was more into his monologue and skits than even seeing any of the guests. I'll miss him at 12:30, but I'm excited for him to be moving up a slot and think he will be the best host of the Tonight Show there'll ever be! Now maybe I'll start catching up on my sleep...

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Hhahahaha!! That's great. I started watching when I young, too - and the show certainly has influenced me in more ways than I could ever name. I think Conan will be great, too!! I'm super excited to start working on the new show!

Hi,
Love Late with Conan - look forward to new show - wish you were staying in NY, but hey, look out the window - can I come with you????? Graphic designer here, looking for work. Enjoy the sun and warmth for all of us.
All the best, take care, and best wishes!

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Wait, look out the window... Is that you who put up those messages?!???

VIP
Hay there. Could you help me? I know this great IRisH Musician and he always wanted to meet Conan. I am his Graphic Designer for the band Dublin Soul. I would love to send Conan his C/D and Bio but how do i do that? How can I make sure he will get it?

*********************************************************
Aaron Responds: Uuuuhhh... I'm not sure quite yet. Let me find out what our current address is!

Hey there, Aaron!
I was just wondering if you happened to find out anything about the internships, yet? I saw that someone else asked that question a while back, but was just curious if you had heard anything.

Thanks for entertaining ALL of our questions!

Lots of Love,
Lauren

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Oh yes - send a cover letter and resume to ttswco@yahoo.com!! Good luck, duder. GOOD LUCK!

if Conan really was the hipster, he would have NBC move the show to Des Moines..... or Fargo..... I can just hear Andy announcing the "the Tonight Show from FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA!!!!!!!!

new york.... LA....new york...LA..... zzzzzzzz

might be hard to get guests to shlep to Fargo in the winter.....

************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Fargo?! HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIIIINNNNNND!???

I hear you, though. Where's Adult Swim out of? Atlanta or something, right? That's pretty sweet. And they shot Eastbound and Down in North Carolina I think, right?
