OPERATION: MINDBEAM EXPLODER

Posted February 18, 05:04 PM

Three shows to go, baby. THREE SHOWS. I feel like an idiot saying how many shows we have left on every single blog every day, but it's just impossible to get my mind around. THREE SHOWS!

Up top, I've got some great news: Max and the band will be joining us out in LA!!! That's right, baby! You know what that means: GET READY FOR SOME SWEET LA MW7 ACTION!! With all that sun, LaBamba is gonna have to wear TWO hats!!

Tonight's show features more CLASSIC Late Night bits, of course - but we've also got a slew of secret cameos, and a certain special guest who is sure to go down in history as Conan's "Bette Midler"... Well, kind of. Watch tonight and see for yourself! It's a show not to be missed.

Also something you shouldn't miss tonight - the new opening to our final three shows!! II was lucky enough to be asked by our Head Writer Mike Sweeney to put something together for our last couple how openings, and it premieres tonight! Let's hope it doesn't ruin the whole show, shall we?

Finally, FINALLY tonight... Remember a little while back - say, a week - when I was going all crazy about a little thing called "OPERATION: MINDBEAM EXPLODER"?! Remember that? Usually I just get really into promoting my little special projects and surprises for you guys, but... Well, I'll be honest. I've been a little busy, and I feel like I haven't really gotten everyone as excited about it as I should have. But regardless, the show is almost done, and OPERATION: MINDBEAM EXPLODER IS COMPLETE.

And I think it goes without saying that it's going to make your Mindbeam EXPLODE.

Let's go:

As we all know, Conan O'Brien is a great doodle artist. He loves to scrawl on pretty much everything; our old offices even had drawings that he did on the walls! It's pretty awesome. Anyway, what you might NOT know is that, for the past 16 years of this show, every single one of our scripts has been adorned with a Conan O'Brien Original Doodle!!!! That's right - ever since show #001, the cover of every script has had some sort of COB drawing on it. They change about four times a year, or once the seasons change. Many of them are topical, and relate to something that happened on the show or in the world around that time. Despite the style of drawing or the subject drawn, all the drawings have one thing in common: THEY ARE AWESOME. And why should our staff be the only ones who get to enjoy something awesome?! We shouldn't!

That's why we've put them up in our Photo Section for all of you guys to enjoy as well!!!

SO HEAD ON UP THERE AND ENJOY THEM ALREADY!!!

« Back to Blog

Wow, Aaron! That was so cool of you to post all of those!!! Did you have to scan all of those suckers in? You're awesome!!!!! Bleysome!

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, Nick!! The big thanks actually goes to ou Script Coordinator, Todd Mole, who was the man who scanned them all in and sent them to me!! Thanks, T Money!!

oh my word! so freaking exciting! still going to cry but yay! max and co. are going! thank you all so much for the wicked drawings. i wish i could draw my face on walls.

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You're very welcome!! It's something cool that we all get to see, so I'm glad you guys get to enjoy it as well!!

My mind is blown. I am typing this without a skull so if I make a typo, please forgive me. Those are amazing. I'm in awe.

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: HA HA HA. Sorry about that... I know how hard it can be to type with a missing brainpan.

Wow! OPERATION MINDBEAM EXPLODE is exploding my mind, as if it were the target of some sort of beam or something.

Seriously thanks for doing that all that hard work!

(And can you believe the whole Give A Piece of the Set to the Audience thing today? Holy poo-gas!)

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: It's MINDBEAM EXPLODER, jerkface. JESUS, FAKE MICHAEL JORDAN FREAKING PAY ATTENTION.

And I hope you had a fun time at the wrap party!! ;)

My mindbeam has just been exploserized.
I wish I had even an inkling of drawing talent. But the style of Conan's drawings are great. I love the running joke of christmas vs. hanukkah during the holidays.
Also, Colbert cameo last night = greatness. It's a pretty ballsy move to call out the inventor on his own invention. That's like telling Thomas Edison that his light bulb wasn't good enough and then making a new one...oh wait. That already happened. Those people who invented fluorescent light bulbs are pretty ballsy too.
Aside from my testicular references, this will be my last chance to comment on the blog before the credits roll for the final time, as I'll be holed up at an undisclosed location in the center of New Jersey, rehearsing non-stop with the all-state band for the rest of the week. Point is, I know I don't comment much, but I've made it a religious activity to look forward to and view the blog, comments, LN Underground vids, and various other projects you work so hard to keep us entertained with each night. I know I speak for everyone when I say thanks for your effort and everything you've done for us. I've immensely enjoyed all of it and I'm definitely looking forward to more in the coming years.
Until then, good luck with the moving process and don't forget to keep sunscreened.
Best,
Steve

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, Steve!! I hope that you'll keep checking back here every Monday for the new "Late Night to Tonight Show Transition Blog"!! Good luck with the All-State Band, you braggart!! ;)

Aaron Scott Bleyaert!!
Yayyys!! I figured the band was going to be joining you guys, but it's great to hear you confirm that.
And hmm.. I wonder who will be on the podcast? ;) Well, I'll be hurring home from school to download it and listen to it (a million times)!!
I LOVED the Colbert bit last night! I was fortunate enough to see what Colbert did on his show, and I was just waiting for Conan to get back at him lol. That whole string battle was classic. xD
And THANK YOU SO MUCH for putting up all of the doodles!! They're amazing!! I've looked through them all several times already, and I still need to look at them all again. And again. And again. :D
Woah. 3 more. That's.. sad and depressing, but also exciting and intense. I saw the bit on the Today show yesterday morning (thank Conan I watch the Today show every morning before school, or I wouldn't have seen it!), and I can't stop watching it lol. I love how everything in the prop room was all INAPROPRIATE and how he let Mat Lauer take the raccoon with the jet pack. x] Also, they played Coldplay's Lovers In Japan song, and now every time I hear it I'll think of Late Night.
Well, hand over the tissues, I'm going to start crying either Thursday or Friday night. Watching Conan's bit on the Today show almost reduced me to tears, since he sounded so sad and got this distant look in his eyes when Lauer asked if he was going to get emotional on the last show. The only time I've ever seen Conan get all emotional and cry-ish on the show was when Andy left, and that was hard enough. This.. this is going to be so tough! D:
Alright, it occurs to me that I type too much. (: Haha, goodnight/goodmorning/afternoon/-insert the time you are reading this here-!!
Take care everyone! +gives many boxes of tissues+

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You KNOW that we wouldn't let a shot across the bow like that would go unanswered!! Seriously though, Stephen is a great friend to our show, so I'm glad we got to incorporate him into one of the final shows!

Oh, sweet, sweet jesus, man what have you done?! It's been a pipe dream of mine that those would be put up. AND NOW THEY ARE!!!
And Hoorah for Max!!! I had a suspicion that at the very least him and LaBamba would go when conan confirmed that Year 2000 would make the move.
On a similar topic, do you know who'll be conan's announcer when the show moves? I assume Joel is staying in NY, what with him being the voice of the Thanksgiving parade and all...
And I'm to see your work on the new opening!

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Hey man... Pipe dreams are still dreams - and dreams can always come true!! We are all very excited about the MW7 joining us out West, too - those guys are totally awesome!! What'd you think of the opening?!

SWEAR TIME: Last night my mother f***ing piece of sh** no good motorola dvr did not record the show! WTF**k?? i am gonna have to watch it on NBC.COM. Thank god for the internet, otherwise i would be even more pissed. Thank you NBC for putting the shows on the net!!! Now pay those writers what they want! That strike is still going on right?

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Holy jumping Hugh Jackman! I've never seen you this upset!! The internet will solve all your problems, baby. Just log on and cybermama will make it all better...

Yay!! I'm so excited that the band will be going too! That's the best thing I've heard all day. For reals. It was a long, bad day.

Thanks so much for putting up the doodles! I just checked them out and they're awesome! I wish I could draw like him. Hell, I just wish I could draw! =P

Haven't been able to watch the shows this week but they're all on my Tivo for this weekend. I will be watching Friday's live though. Wouldn't miss it!

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Oh no! Why was it a bad day?! What happened?! I hope you enjoy our last couple shows, A Train!!

Hey Aaron!!! Just wanted to say that i'm a big fan of the blog, videos, podcast and really glad to hear that you,Chill and the Max Weinberg 7 are going to LA with Conan!!! It just wouldn't have been the same without you guys. Thanks for always giving us fans a very entertaining and inside look of whats it was like being apart of Late Night. Keep up the good work and look forward to The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks very much!! We're super excited, too!! It's a whole giant brand new adventure - and one that I'm psyched that I can take you guys on, as well!! Stay tuned! ;)

Hey Aaron!
I was in the audience today (WED 18th!)It was definately a lot of fun. I loved getting a glimpse into the inner workings of the show. I must say...what happened to certain items on the set, via certain tools, wielded by certain hosts... I don't think it was very expected haha!
The show ended very appropriately... with me helping Conan up into the audience and us holding each other for a few seconds. I'm dead serious. He's light like a feather. I tender, pale, feather :)
Take care!
~Krista

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Awesome, Krista!!! I'm so glad you were able to get into one of our last shows - the energy of these February audiences has really been fantastic! You guys rock!!!

And yeah... That dude is THIN!

I'm excited to see the new opening!

I love the doodles, thanks for sharing!

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You're very welcome, Alicia. Enjoy!

thank you, aaron, for exploding my mind. now i have to pick my measly brains off the keyboard.

OMG. i just about died looking at those drawings! they're absolutely priceless. whilst readin your blog i was hoping for you to say that you'll be giving away copies of 'em to us Late Night crazies! gaaad. i can't get over how brilliant conesy is. and you! coz you knew that twould blow us away.

...along with the announcement that max and the band are moving, too! awesomest! :jumpclaps:

what, THREE SHOWS? NFW. i love everyone at Late Night with Conan O'Brien. there, i just had to say it. you'll still be here til friday, but i'm already lookin forward to see you all again on june.

always,
joyce

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Oh, Joyce. You should know by now to cover your keyboard in plastic when you read this blog. It's so hard to get the brain stains out of plastic! I hope you'll still be following us during the transition every Monday!

Oh my god, I'm speechless. You're kidding me, right? The entire Max Weinberg 7, IN LA? How is that possible?! This is awesome!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, I never expected this to happen, I figured Max would be pulled in by a big contract and all, but the rest of the guys have other jobs, gigs, bands they dedicate themselves to, plus their families, didn't think any of them would uproot themselves to the West, this is insane! It's official, the MW7 has officially sold out :P and I'm not complaining about it, haha!

Bley, you're amazing today, great news, and unbelievable Conan doodles... why did I have to read this at 11:30 when I need to play desperate catch up on sleep! Forget my problems, thank you so much for all of this! Ahh, I'm so excited you're going to LA, have I stressed that enough? Thank you for being such a humble servant to the LN fans, Aaron, you've been so good to us as fans, and I'm glad we don't have to see that go away.

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: I KNOW!! It's so great!! Max has always been a great character in our show, but I think it's only the past couple years that Mark, Richie, Jerry, Scott, Mike, and Jimmy have really come into their own as characters as well! I'm glad they'll be joining us.

And thank YOU for caring about us!! I hope you'll continue following us every Monday for the Tonight Show Transition!!

Aaron, you are literally the greatest person ever. The opening tonight was SO GOOD, and OPERATION: MINDBEAM EXPLODER totally exploded my mindbeam... Whatever that means. I am refreshing my iTunes every 3 seconds to see that Conan is the last guest on the Podcast. I am confident that he is because, based on EVERYTHING that you've done for us, you do not disappoint!!!

***************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Ha ha ha - I'm not sure THAT'S true, Alex; Abe Lincoln was pretty great too... I'll take second best! ;)

Seriously though, I hope you liked the last Podcast!! Conan *IS* the last guest, and he was super nice to do it!!

also, i'd just like to say how the conan-colbert string bikini showdown *killed* me! i was ROFLOL! damn. :::wipes tears off me eyes:::

luv,
joyce xox

Those are awesome!!!!! He definitely got to be a better artist as time went on. Thanks for getting those up on the interweb for us!

So, what are the rules of Vitamin Water Baseball, anyways? Anything like normal baseball?

I'M SO HAPPY ABOUT THE MAX WEINBERG 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was getting worried because there were internet rumors about Max always being a Jersey shore boy and never leaving, but I'm glad they're coming to Cali. If only you could bottle the chemistry that Conan and Max had, well, the world might explode.

It's one of my goals in life to meet Mr. O'Brien and Mr. Weinberg someday, but I'm afraid to do so because I might have a heart attack and die. Hopefully when they're in California, I'll run into them.

On a sadder, more horrible depressing note: 3 shows left. 2 by the time this comment gets read. I'm gonna cry. I'm making my friends get together on Friday to stay up and watch the show whether they like it or not (and they will like it).

Oh, and finally got to watch Monday's show. I loved the dog ventriloquist. That was awesome.

And again, you're awesome. Awecellent.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: We're all extremely happy about the Max Weinberg 7!! And that is some amazing chemistry... I fyou could bottle it, you'd have one seriously empty bottle!! ;)

What'd you think of the final two shows, LCW?

Love the doodles!! Thanks so much for sharing them!

Hooray for the MW7! And hooray for exclamation points!

Tonight's show was awesome. This whole week has been awesome. It's difficult to believe that the transition is finally here. And I cannot believe that Conan tore up LaBamba's stand. Wow.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You're very welcome, Kara! I'm glad that Conan let me put them up!

And you're telling me!!! We all gasped when he chopped the floor up like that!! ;)

Infrickincredible last week of shows. Just amazing. Very bittersweet, to be sure.

Couple last questions for you, if you have time to field them:

- With all the auction stuff, I started wondering, what are YOU going to take away from the set? Is there something you have your eye on?
- What's going to happen to some of the more well-known pieces, like Conan's desk? Please tell me he's not gonna chop it to hell on the last night.
- What's 6A going to be used for once Conan's gone? Are there plans for it yet?
- You don't happen to have a scan of the script cover for March 20, 2008 do you? (That's the taping I was at and got to be in a bit with COB)

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: More sweet than bitter, but definitely a mix of both! ;) Questions? I love em! Let's do this:
- I actually already have a piece of the old set; I was lucky enough to snag one of the wall cushions - specifically, the purple one right behind the guest's head! So I don't really feel a need to take pieces of this one.
- That's a good question. I don't know if it'll be donated to the Museum of Radio & TV, or what. I seriously doubt it'll just be chopped up and thrown away.
- A new show called "Dr. Oz" will be moving into Studio 6A... Not sure when, but I'd imagine sometime in the next few months. Studio space in Midtown is at a premium these days!
- And I don't!! I'm sorry, dudebro... But you could snag one of the scans off the photo gallery and photoshop the right date on it! No one would be the wiser!!

I don't remember the last time I laughed -so- hard while watching late night. The star wars bit killed me and the "bloopers" had me loudly laughing at 1:15 am or whenever it was. =D
Great show tonight.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Why thank you, Kit! I think that Star Wars remote was Triumph's best, personally!

SOOOO Happy to hear about Max and the band...that makes me feel a lot better!! Great Mindbeam Exploder I LOVED looking at those doodles, Conan is an amazing doodler! haha anyways Awesome, Awesome show I loved the blooper reel it was hilarious!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, Linz!! He's great at the ol' doodles - our old office used to have his doodles all over the walls!! Good times, good times.

Yay to MW7 to go to LA with the show. La Bamba will get a nice tan there...
I'm sick at the moment so those doodles really made my day. I've always known how multi-talented COB is and those were again one thing to prove it. I've also loved to see the old clips where he is singing and playing his guitar. Amazing guy, always been always will be.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Ha!! LaBamba will probably have a tan line across his forehead with that hat on! And yeah man... COB is one multitalented dudebro!

I LOVE YOU AARON. Seriously, your awesome. My mindbeam was exploded into many tiny pieces. And then I had to watch last night's show (which was fantastic) with an exploded mindbeam! :)

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Ha ha ha - I hope the loss of your mindbeam didn't affect your enjoyment of the show, Beth!!

I just have one simple question; Who's Suzie? (It says that on each of every awesome picture)

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Oh yeah! Susie Santomauro is one of our Assistant Directors - she's the woman who times out the whole show, so we know how over or under we are! Whenever you see Jeff Ross on the phone during the show, it's usually because he's talking to Susie to see if we need to cut something out!

hey! loved the opening sequence. great job!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, Christina! It was Sweeney's idea, and it was nice of him to let me do it!! I felt honored to be a part of the end of the show like that.

Oh, and after seeing the opening you did, I am extremely nostalgic. I had almost forgotten about the sequence where he rode the bicycle. And the I love the animation on the first one. I've only seen that one on crappy youtube videos; nice to see it on my TV set. It just all really came together well...and makes me want to sulk in my petty nostalgic longing for more conan during the next three months. I'd say your job was well done.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Ha ha ha - no one could be more nostalgic than me, Joe. You and I have the same feeling!

No matter how many times I see that Triumph clip I still am in tears from laughing.

Having worked in theatre for a bit I know exactly how soothing it is to take an ax or a sledgehammer to any set. However we've never cut any cables before with an ax since bad stuff happens then. I'm sure the audio guy was silently screaming at what was happening.

Much thanks for the COB doodles AND podcast. What a great treat to end the show run. I think my favourite is show #0833 with Dilbert and COB proudly displaying their stuff.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Ha ha ha - I think we're all just glad that Conan didn't get electrocuted or anything! Cutting live cables with an axe is never a great idea!

And yeah - all those script covers are pretty great. As a going away gift, we bound them all up, and everyone on the show signed the script that they started on! It was really cool.

well, here i am again and my dvr did not record last night's show either. i even went into my guide to make sure it was set to record. Back to Hulu! F**K

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: JUST BUY A NEW ONE ALREADY, IT CLEARLY HATES OUR SHOW.

The opening was awesome Aaron! I've grown up watching this show and it was nice to see some of those older openings.

My favorite doodle is the one with Doodle Conan sticking up his middle finger to all the non-believers. Bad ass to say the least.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thank you, sweet Abigail! It was really fun to put together. And I love how the doodles get more and more surreal towards the end...

That is great news that Max & the band are going to LA. Were the rumors true at all that his east coast ties were having him reconsider going to LA? Or, was he going all along?

Also, what about some of the other major people -- Jeff Ross, Mike Sweeney. They are going to LA, right?

Do you know if Joel will still be the announcer?

Thanks for the great blog!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: I'm not sure what happened with any behind the scenes maneuvering that had to be made, but I'm happy that the outcome is what it is! Jeff Ross and Mike Sweeney are both going, as is a large slice of our staff!! And you're welcome!!

Yay for Max and the gang moving out to the new show. I love them so!

P.S. I think I am secretly in love with La Bamba. I can't help it...

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Double yay!! And you're WHAT?! In love with LaBamba?!?? Oh brother... ;)

First of all, yesterday's show was Awesome!! Loved the song and the mess ups video.. I was laughing SOO hard at that video! Hilarious. Operation: Mindbeam Exploder is amazing as well! Did not realize Conan was such a good... doodler I guess you would say. Man, the awesomeness never stops, does it? And I just got your twitter about Andy being in your guys' staff photo... I demand to see that picture! Alright, now for a quick story. So I was in class and I was talking to my teacher (the one who kind of reminds me of you) and we were talking about New York and I said my favorite part was when I got to see Conan... and then he went on to say that he went and saw Conan and actually got to be the guy who dances with him before the show starts. Me=JEALOUS!! And then he even talked about Conan during the lecture that day... awesome.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: The staff photo was the final bumper of the last show!! Did you catch it?!

And that teacher sounds like he's the man!! Pix plz!

fantastic!!! My mindbeam has officially exploded. I love this and project private eyes. It is a really really in-depth look behind the scenes. Two shows left!!!!!! Omg I started cyring last night. You can just tell by watching the show that there's just a certain sort of energy in the air, you know, an energy of sadness and excitement for new beginnings at the same time. Anyway, I hope things are going well for you these last few days. This week has flown by! :)
--Julie

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: No... Don't cry, Julie!! we're not leaving, just changing into a different animal!! We'll be right back before you know it!

Awesome.
The Max Weinberg Seven are coming to LA too?
It just keeps getting better for us in viewer-land!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You knnnnnnnnnnooooooow iiiiiit, R dog!

Yay for the band!!!!!! But what about Joel Goddard? You can't leave him behind!!!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: I know!!! I hope he comes with...

Thank you soo much for posting those pics of the script covers! I love them! = )

Remember about a week or so ago I said I was sending you & some other staff members letters? So I sent them and hopefully they should be there! Hope everyone got theirs, but it's OK if you guys didn't, it's the thought that counts!

I love you guys so much!! This will probably be my last Late Night blog comment unfortunately. Thanks so much for everything,

Liz A.

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You're welcome, Liz! Oh, by the way, we got your letter!! Thanks for the awesome pictures, duder! You rock!! I hope you'll follow us as we move out West!!!

Aaron Scott Bleyaert!!
Really quicky, Jeff Ross and Mike Sweeney. Staying or going to LA?? *crosses fingers and whispers "please say LA... please say LA...*

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Both going! Sweeney's already moved out there!!

dude what's up with the lack of comments/blog today??? I'm waiting...
:)

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Sorry sorry sorry. It's been a busy couple of days! See, this show of ours is ending...

oh, the lessons i could give that man on proportions and the like... would result in nothing because i can't teach for cheese, and believe me, i like cheese.
but hey, i know nothing of cartooning. so he could prolly attempt to teach me a few things as well.
in other news, i don't have strep, but i got some blood taken to see if i have mono. i'm staying at my dad's until my mom gets home, but my dad got a job (epic yay), so i'm gonna be alone for one last day on monday.
and, despite my illness (which makes me unbelievably tired, even though i wake up randomly at 4:30 each day and can't go back to sleep), i will try to stay up tonight and watch the last episode.
...
HOLY FCKIN POTATOES, THE LAST EPISODE IS TONIGHT. but of course, i won't actually believe it until... oh, let's say seven months from now.
anyways, if y'all haven't seen eye or hair of my letter/drawing, i'm guessing it got lost or something. which sucks. but, life will move on. slowly. and irritatingly.
adios, my loves!
smile

************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Yeah, it STILL hasn't hit me that the show is over... We get these weeks off every once in a while, and this just feels like an extended hiatus! I think it'll all become real when I start living in LA!

And NO! I haven't seen your drawing yet, Jacki! I have been on the lookout for it... Hopefully it'll be there when I get back into the office next Tuesday!

That's Awesome

************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Yes it is, Rich. ;)

Dude, i got a Tivo. Guess what, i can order Dominos from it!!! actually i can just use my phone and order good pizza just as easy. XOXOXOXOXOX

********************************************************
Aaron Responds: You can order pizza from your tivo?! Sweet Jesus!!! Dangerous, dangerous...
