I want to say I am glad that your taking over the Tonight show on NBC television.ItNice to have a young youthful up to date person on the Tonight show and up to dateon music and youthful culture...
BAD Sound Mix/Quality for Musical Guests
I am an avid Conan watcher, and one of the first things I noticed beginning with the first Tonight Show, was that Max's band as well as the musical guests have been poorly mixed. I have a nice HDTV with good sound and never had any problems with Leno or the old Conan show...
arnold
personally, i think conan isn't complete w/o the arnold screen, and now he's IN california. maybe if enough people complain nbc will notice and put one in the tonight show studio. or does anyone know conan's E-mail? i want to tell him directly.

I Just Got Laid! ...Off.

Posted November 30, 04:13 PM

Well, we were all hoping that it wouldn't come to this, but hoping doesn't always work.

Today we got laid off.

They broke the news to us at a meeting this morning with the whole show present. We then had other separate smaller meetings where the Human Resources folks explained things like filing for unemployment, applying for insurance, and so on. It was all pretty surreal, to be honest. But I have to say that it was all handled really well; the HR folks knew what they were talking about, and it all went very smoothly... So instead of it being a crazy and stressful day, the whole thing actually seemed really comfortable. We were even joking around in our meeting about what to do if we come back to find that Telemundo has moved into our offices! The answer: Murder.

The rest of the day was spent tying up loose ends - passing around contact sheets, packing up stuff, talking about the strike, etc. After today, our security passes won't work... So I'm taking everything home that I think I'll need in the coming months. It's incredibly strange to say goodbye to all of my co-workers not knowing when I'll see them again. These people are my friends, and it's going to be weird to not see them every day.

So... That's it. Thank you to everyone who entered the Ring Spinning Contest, and keep those entries coming - we'll extend the deadline until the blog comes back. Think of it as homework!! While The Late Night Insider will no longer be updated until we're back in business, we will continue to update The Late Night Underground, so make sure to check over there for new stuff. Today, we've got a sweet rap I made about the Writer's Strike!! Oh yeah!!!

As always, thanks for reading. Let's hope this strike gets resolved soon, and I'll see ya when I see ya!

Best,

Aaron

what about the money that Conan was gonna give you guys for next week? this is temporary right? all you guys will have a job when this whole mess clears up i hope. this is horrible!

I wish you the best Aaron and the rest of the late night gang!

****************************************************
Aaron Responds: No no no... Conan paying us is still happening and everything. It's just that NBC is laying us off. It's two different things. The fact that Conan is paying all of us next week is now that much more awesome because we've been officially laid off. Thanks for the well wishes and everything... I just hope it all ends soon!!

im so sorry aaron i hope you(and the rest of the staff)will be alright till this strike is over im sure you probably wont be able to read this till you get back but i wish you guys all the best and hope this strike ends soon

sincerely,
Kelly Boston

****************************************************
Aaron Responds: Hey, thanks Kelly! I just hope it ends soon, you know? Everything will be oay, though... It's not like the show is ending or anything! We still have our jobs; we just can't do them right now!

You get your job back when the strike is over right? Hope so... Good luck. :)

****************************************************
Aaron Responds: Yes we do... Which is why I'm not freaking out! It's cool, dude - I've still got a job at some point... It's like some weird hiatus, basically.

What happened to Conan paying for all next week?

****************************************************
Aaron Responds: Have no fear - that's still happening! But NBC itself is laying us off. That makes the COB money that much more sweet!!!

Sorry, man. I really wish this strike would end. Hang in there.

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Me too, Mark. Me too.

Sorry to hear the bad news Aaron. Hopefully the strike ends shortly and we'll have you back soon. Best of luck to you!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, Thomas. Even though we're now back on the air, I still hope that we can get our writers back as soon as possible! We need those fellas!!!

I JUST learned that Conan would be paying you guys out of his own pocket... my love and respect for that man just sky-rocketed.

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: ...Then you can imagine how I felt!!! CONAN IS THE MAN.

I miss you guys already!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: We miss you too, LCW!!

A-dub: in the spare time I had because there was no new Conan to be seen, I was surprised to find a Facebook group about you. Even more surprising, you created it. Even more surprising than that, all the discussion topics about how you are such an amazing person were started by you. Those last two things weren't that surprising. Come back soon please.

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: HA HA HA. Yes. That is all true. And did ou notice that I created my Facebook group in the "Common Interest - Beauty" section!? I thought it appropriate!!

I'm sure everyone saw this coming eh? I mean they weren't going to keep paying you hang around and play Rock Band all day although that would rock.

Anyway, hope you got some money in the reserve to tough it for a while!

Let's hope this strike ends soon!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Absolutely. I hope it ends tomorrow!!

I read your blog with regularity, but I never comment (for reasons which you will become clear). I feel compelled to comment now.

I was intern coordinator for "Late Night" from 1998-99 (in fact, I "inherited" Sharon Hardy as an intern and some of my hires include Andrew Weinberg, Lonny Ross, Mindy Kaling, and Rooey Hershovitz--and yes, I know I probably mangled his last name). As a matter of fact, John Rau was on the train with me when I met my wife. While I haven't been in regular contact with the folks up there in a good, long while, I still feel awful and horrible for the fact that you've been laid-off (something I went through when I worked at MTV in 2001 myself).

When I heard that Conan was going to pay for your salaries out of his own pocket, I was absolutely...not surprised. That's the Conan I knew from when I was there. He was always the nicest and friendliest guy and I have very, very fond memories of getting "face time" with him when I left (and positively gushed about his pilot "Lookwell" to him and Robert Smigel). Whenever people ask me "What was it like to work at 'Late Night,' " I always say, "Everyone--from Conan on down--is absolutely wonderful to work with." Even though I left broadcasting for publishing, I am still incredibly, incredibly proud of my association with Conan and "Late Night."

I also want to tell you and your fellow researchers, Aaron, to try and get in touch with me. I'm senior researcher for a men's magazine (the one with the bunny) and although we're not hiring any freelancers, I have several connections and, while I can't promise anything, perhaps I can try and help you all find freelance research work to fill up the piggy bank.

Anyway, all the best to you and the "Late Night" crew.

Ron Motta

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Hey Ron!!! It's great to hear from you - I'm glad that you're doing so well!!! Playboy, huh?! Niiiiice. Everyone here sends their best!!!

I'm so sorry! It'll be ok. At the end of the blog when I saw that picture- I got all teary eyed!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Oh no!!! Sorry about that, Kristina!! it's okay, though - WE'RE BACK!!!

Nooooooooooooooooo.............!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: I KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

Best wishes to all of you! I hope that this stupid strike ends soon... without new TV, I am going insane!! :(

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Thanks, Mark! And without a job, *I* am going insane!

That is the saddest picture I have ever seen in my life. Okay, second saddest.

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: What was the first? It was my Strikebeard, wasn't it? WASN'T IT?!??

Aaron, thanks for the reassurance that the team is going to remain intact after this madness passes. I can't believe the corporate greed that's preventing forward motion in resolving this strike! Unreal.

Considering the wild success of "Conando," a stint at Telemundo might not be too far off.

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: It's pretty unreal. Let's just end this thing already!! Come on, people!!!

Aaron - you should make a documentary about the crew during the strike! Also: thanks for all the groovy Late Night Underground adventures!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: You're welcome, Granny! Make sure to take those diuretics, okay?

I truly love working at NBC and I know it sucks to be layed off right now especially during the holidays (well, maybe it ISN'T such a bad thing after all). I've been doing alot of temp work there since January and I've been in different departments. Never on Connan but still, that would be a dream for me. lol. I LOVE that show! Anywhoo, it's great you guys even though are layed off, you are still being taken care of. NBC always made me feel at home and Telemundo did to and well, I'm sure they are hurting and feel bad that it all had to come down to this. Take care Aaron. Maybe when I temp again at NBC I can meet you??? ;) (I was supposed to be there this week actually but couldn't do it because of another temp assignment...ah well) Ok, this is long. Sorry. Take care!

Sincerely,
Melissa

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Totally, Melissa! It was extremely generous of Conan to pay our salaries like that. EXTREMELY. Glad to see you're part of the NBC family - even if it's only occasionally! Gimme a ring when you're in the building next and we'll meet up!!

Power to the people!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: F YEAH!!

Aaron, what do you think about Jan 2nd return of the show?

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Well, honestly it's very bittersweet. I'm happy that we came back because I now have a job again - so I can pay my rent and buy food and survive and stuff - but it also really sucks because I love our writers, and our show really needs them back!! So yeah. It's complicated. One thing that's NOT complicated is my feeling about The Strike - I hope that the writers get a good deal and that it ends ASAP.

I'm so excited you're coming back on the 2nd!!! The Underground site has been a great pick-me-up every day. I hope that one day I can be a fraction as funny as you guys!!! Happy Holidays and New Year!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: AWESOME. I'm glad to hear it, Meredith! We had a great time doing the Underground site, and it's something we'll definitely keep up during the future!

I thought you weren't going to get laid off because of Conan going back to taping Jan. 2nd? Wow conan's paying you guys.. have to love him. Definitely miss new shows every night. Really sorry about your temporary job loss.. really stinks..

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Nope! We got laaaaaaaiiiiid off. But Conan DID pay us (thanks Conan!) so I was still able to pay my rent!!

Welcome back, Aaron.
I've missed you!

Can't wait for the new episodes.. I'm so hoping that Conan would keep his beard! It would be so cool on so many aspects.

Happy New Year 2008!!!

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Happy New Year yourself, haynie!! What'd you do for NYE?! Did you have a good time?!

Aaron...

hi.

***********************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Hello.

hey Aaron,

you said that you were an intern at one time before getting to do this job? how did u become an intern at late night with Conan? I am really interested in becoming an intern at the nbc studios but dont know where to start?!

************************************************************************
Aaron Responds: Hey David! I most certainly was an intern here at the show - in '01! I'm not exactly sure how you apply for other shows here at NBC, but if you'd like to apply for an internship here, send a cover letter and resume to our totally awesome Intern Coordinator, Chris Formidoni, at:

Late Night with Conan O'Brien
30 Rockefeller Plaza
Suite 901 West
New York, NY
10112

Good luck, man! If you're lucky, I'll even let you touch my beard!!!
