Anytime I sit down to write anything, that initial idea is always the hardest part. Especially in the middle of a season of television, when you’ve just wrapped shooting on your last episode, so you’re already kind of beat up and exhausted and you get into the office the next morning and sit down at your desk and there’s this eerie calm as you set up your laptop and stare at that blank screen and think, “Oh man, I am so screwed…”
But then, you have a coffee and bang your head against the wall for a while and talk to your fellow writers and somehow you get an idea: What if a plane went missing? Okay, that’s something. And what if Kitt, for the first time since we started the show, takes the initiative and gets Mike up at four in the morning to investigate instead of the other way around? That could be fun. And what if when Mike and Kitt arrive at the spot where the transponder failed, the plane had crashed! Cool. But then what? Okay, maybe the plane crash isn’t a real plane crash, maybe it’s been faked! But why would anyone fake a plane crash…?
And onwards and onwards until hopefully you’ve got a story that doesn’t suck.
So, “Fly By Knight.” A missing 8 year old witness. A distraught mother. Both brilliantly played by Bobby Coleman and Bellamy Young, respectively. A ruthless and intelligent bad guy, wonderfully brought to life by Benjamín Benítez. And another interesting antagonist for our hero to battle, the ever diligent extremely agitating Agent Renning, played with fantastic bitchy authority by the lovely and talented Maria Menounos. I had Jay Chandrasekhar (of Super Troopers, among other great comedies) directing, who not only did a great job, but was just fun to hang with. And I was surprised to learn (much to the dismay of Master Key, our visual effects team) this episode had as many VFX shots in it as anything since the first episode we shot, and may I say they all came out looking great.
Oh, and there was the 69 Mach II Mustang, which will speak for itself when you see it.
What else can I tell you? I think, looking back at those first moments of panic, this episode turned out kinda great. It’s certainly my favorite Kitt stuff so far, as this learning intelligence starts to come into its (his?) own, make some decisions, rebel a little bit against the powers that be, do some growing up. Hopefully there will be much more of that in his (there, I said it) future.
As always, thanks for watching,
D
f
Fantastic Episode. I love KITT coming into his own. Thought it was ridiculous that Zoe was going to protect the mom, but since she failed so miserably it was believable. When KITT spoke up and said he can think for himself it was amazing and deciding to go back and help Mike after being ordered not tow was great. I loved the arguing at the end, it was this close, it was not this close, I wasaiming very little chance.... awesome! Only complaint about the episode is the kid. I know there is a limited budget but even on a limited budget couldn't they find a better actor? That kid was horrible, the character was great, but whoever was in charge of casting should be on probation after that one. And finally I don't care what anyone says about the transformations, a 69 Mach II is awesome. Great episode. Oh and my wife is complaining that there hasn't been enough Mike and Sarah since the reboot, she thinks when KITT woke Mike up she should've been there. Personally I don't care, though I do want them to be together, as long as it's clear they are, I don't care how much is on screen. Only fair to post her comments too, she is a Knight Rider convert and thinks you guys are doing a great job too.
This episode was perfect. I love how Kitt is becoming his own "person" (so to speak). The comedy was very nicely done and so was the rest. Great job, Guys!!!
As always... NBC please give us fans a second season of Knight Rider!!!!!
I thought this was one of the best so far. It's all about Mike and KITTand you really captured the spitit of the original. Great back and forth, good supporting cast, an intellegent storyline that did NOT feel dericitive...nice job!
Good episode. I felt like there were some pace issues with Zoe and her Mom, but I liked the plot a lot.
It was really great to see KITT's personality. Loved Mike and KITT arguing; KI3T sounded as human (maybe more) as KI2T. This reboot has realy allowed his character to grow so quickly, it's terrific. He was really well written in this episode. The best yet.
I'm really struggling with the transformations; until there's some really solid science to explain them, they just continue to remove me from my suspension of disbelief. (I think they're a ratings killer.) I can believe the exterior changing, but the interior of the car changing with nothing happening to its passengers in the process? Come on. I have a pretty wild imagination, and I just can't come up with anything to explain it. (This has to be something that keeps people from coming back.) The 69 Mustang is a cool car, but this was really gimmicky. Maybe this is some kind of agreement with Ford, but it's just ruining the show for me.
However, out of my high hopes for the future of this show, I put my gripes with that aside, and everything else was great.
MasterKey: Thank you for showing KITT's HUD from OUTSIDE the car at the end. I've been hoping to see this for a while. I'm sure that wasn't easy, but WOW, what a difference that makes! I hope we'll see that more often.
I really liked this episode! It was comical at times and of course clever (ahem, Mike and KITT!).
~Mike and KITT's friendship has a life of its own now. Justin Bruening does a great job at firing back the dialogue.
~My favorite scene is a toss-up between 1) the opener with KITT waking up Mike and 2) Billy solving the equations on the wall.
~Seeing KITT as a blue car was odd! It's a good odd.
~As a Mike and Sarah fan, I obviously want to see more of these two together. I also happen to like things as is with the small meaningful references into their relationship here and there (no melodrama!). New promo with a girl kissing Mike? Tsk! Oh Mike!
~I thought that KITT making his own decision was key. I liked how that was shown with enough confidence and eyebrow-raising execution while veering away from being too mighty and haughty.
~Zoe should get some physical training from Mike and Sarah!
~Good to see Billy and Zoe out of the KITT cave.
More KR!
Knight Rider is the best!
I hope NBC (or SciFi) will save the series!
If second season will be: I would like it if the intro would be similar to the original series (KITT arrives from the pink desert...)
And I would like to see Dakota Fanning as a guest star. (My favorite actress to my favorite show.)
It's Hat again with the long essay thing again! Opinionated, constructive criticism, if I didn't like something I'll say so, scroll past if that's not your cup of tea, feel free to email me, et cetera. On with the show.
I'm still watching Knight Rider!
More than that, this week I felt like I was watching NEW Knight Rider instead of Old Knight Rider with new actors. Mr. Andron, this is your best script since the pilot, and I LIKED the pilot.
Awesome things:
Those three people back at the SSC actually got out there and Did Stuff. They didn't just stay at the SSC and technobabble and exposit at us (valuable stuff, sure, but when you've got three characters doing what, dramatically, one could do, things get awkward). It's something that's been a little lacking since the restructuring started, and something I'd missed-- it took so long to get things to the point where everybody in the show at least did something no one else could've managed, and then starting with Billy and zoe sacked out on the couch it looked like the SSC was just there to... be the set. You kept the more developed characters; I'm glad you used them, this week.
... Kitt's been reading the forums, hasn't he? Autonomy and initiative and thinking for himself-- good for him! It's about time. He and Mike are really getting the right rhythm here, and you can tell that Mike's early lessons have sunk in. Heck, last week he made the SSC look redundant.
I just want to disclaim again before I go on with some weird praise: I don't like Sarah. I don't think her behavior has been particularly adult, professional, or appropriate through most of the season, I don't like her wardrobe, and I have this desperate urge to wash that Jack Sparrow eyeliner off of her. I could go on and I could make it detailed and give reasons for every reaction I've had, but I've done so in previous reviews and this week what I really want to say is: Sarah had a major part in this week's episode and nothing she did irritated me! It sounds like backhanded praise, it really does, but there have been... exactly two other episodes where Sarah hasn't bothered me at all. As far as I'm concerned, it's a huge deal. If you continue to show her working at being The New Devon, you might even get me to LIKE her.
References to the pilot are awesome. The pilot was good. Let's keep going back to the pilot-- nice viable setup to the kind of stories you're telling now.
Thank you for acknowledging that Kitt uses a restraint system! It's not the same as actually seeing a seatbelt, but some of us remember Ki2t's Passive Laser Restraint System as a nod to the first buckle-up campaigns. (Course, in California these days, it's "Click it or Ticket.")
Kitt turning into an OLDER car was also awesome, and changing color again! I missed that from the pilot. Out here, anyway, Mustangs are everywhere-- even saw a GT KR 500 on the road the other day so new it still had paper plates (the economy's not bothering SOMEBODY)-- so the ability to change color and plates is a big advantage in terms of disguise-- I'm so glad to see it again! (No, still not crazy about the transformations, but what can I do? The show seems married to the concept.)
I also liked the exchange between Kitt, Mike, and Billy. That was well-written and fun, and this show has been needing some fun. (Mike is Kitt's bitch. Hee!)
Seeing the sleeping pod in use was oddly nice, too-- Mike looked at home in his, certainly. And I meant to mention this the last time we saw Mike's pod-- I like that his is painted differently than Sarah's. I have to wonder if he's living at the SSC (or the hangar of doom or whatever the actual building is called-- when can we start calling it FLAG or the Foundation again?), though. It was never explained where he went after he couldn't go home again.
Veering towards the constructive criticism end of the spectrum, I notice that, while Mike told the Kid of the Week that he hadn't killed the man who shot his mother, he neglected to mention that he beat the crap out of the guy who shot his mother and then took off to kill the guy who gave the order to kill his mother, instead, and killed two other people in the process, without regard for the fact that he could've killed Charles and expected (from his reaction) to get himself, Kitt, and Sarah killed, too. Now, I understand why he didn't go saying all that, but it does make him just a little bit of a hypocrite. (Why yes, I did get the pilot on DVD, why do you ask?)
I expected Mike's answer to "You blew up the evidence?" to be "No, I blew up a lot of powdered sugar" or something. I am absolutely positive it is not safe to disperse that much cocaine through air you're going to be breathing. ... Actually I'm pretty sure it's not safe to inhale a bunch of powdered sugar or flour, either, but it's a safer kind of unsafe. Although it does explain why the hole was freshly dug.
Still not sure whether Zoe was not badass enough or just badass enough at the mom's house-- something just felt weird there, and I cannot put my finger on what it was.
Also, the Mom of the Week had her kid when she was nineteen, he's ten now, makes her twenty-nine... It's okay to cast people over thirty as sympathetic characters and then NOT kill them off, it really is!
And I'm still disappointed that despite the fact Kitt has a 3D object generator (and it's weird that I accept THAT when I don't accept the transformations, but it's mainly a conservation of mass/energy thing), Mike doesn't carry his gun in a holster, when he carries a gun.
But! No gaping plot holes, no smart people acting stupid, no sex taking over the show, the science mistake wasn't half as 'acid does not work that way' as the bank robbery episode, and I don't expect the age issues to be resolved by the end of the season, anyway. (Just... you guys do know they're there, right? They're there. I know Hollywood likes to glamourize youth, but thirty-five isn't exactly old, and the sexiest thing you've had on this show was Charles and his rival whose name I don't recall doing the 'sex as mind game' thing.) My complaints are small ones, and that in and of itself is a big thing! The writing has REALLY improved in the last three episodes.
This was a really, really good episode, better than last week's in a lot of ways. I LIKE what you're doing now-- the restructured show is WAY better than what it was. It still needs some polish and I hope you get a second season to put that polish onto it.
Everybody's writing real physical letters to Angela Bromstad to get this show renewed, right?
I really enjoyed this episode a lot, but I do have one complaint. And that complaint is about the Mach II Mustang, while I think the idea is cool, I still think that when KITT said he was going old school he should've transformed into KI2T. Other than that this ep was definitely one of your best, I really hope NBC brings KR back for a second season and if they do I really hope you guys bring back the Semi. I also enjoyed how everyone had a role and that Billy, Zoe, and Sarah didn't just sit around computing through the whole thing. All in all you guys did a great job on this episode, keep it up! Oh and fix your comment box so I don't have to type this in notepad and then paste it.
David, I've loved every episode you have fully written. There is a matter to detail that certain episodes (not written by you) that just seemed a little hard to get. Every week for the past four weeks I've been convinced I've seen the best episode from the series so far. Your outstanding skills have me changing my opinion once again, praising this latest release to be the best out of all 15 eps so far.
To the folks at NBC who played a part in resurrecting Knight Rider, THANK YOU. I'm looking forward to the remainder of the season, and am crossing my fingers for a second.
is David Hasselhoff and the knight industries 2000 ever going to come back
I just found these blogs and find it amazing that the audience of the hard core fans can actually voice their opinions about the shows. With that said I like to say awesome!!!! The shows have gotten better. I like that Kitt is more than an information dispenser. I like that he uses a laser and the mini Gs were awesome as well. Also like that Kitt is thinking for himself, and solve problems on his own... like tracking Mike after the bank heist in that one episode. I also like that he transforms into other cars not just colors of the same type of Mustang. Props for the vintage mustang as well. Hey, do you guys take suggestions? How about Kitt becoming invisible or blending into backgrounds. Well enough chat. Keep up the good work and remember if nothing else blow something up. I like it when things go boom.
Another good episode. I still don't like the transformation thing, but with the better stories I can work around that.
Great show....We need a second season...PLEASE, pretty please.

LOL I think this was one of my favorite episodes so far. Kitt's sassy attitude with Michael was hilarious. Great plot job with the whole thing. The actors are doing great as are the rest of the producers and directors!!
I'm a theatre major at Berea College Kentucky and I hope to direct and produce film someday. How do you get 'guest stars' onto the show? Do you have a long and tedious audtion for that kind of thing or do you just pick someone? lol
Well, since a lot of people have made suggestions or comments I just have to say this: 1) I love Knight Rider 2008 and can't complain about any of it since there is no way I can compare it to the old series since I've never watched it. 2) I love the transformations and every other high tech gizmo that Kitt has, it's totally awesome!! I don't understand why everyone is so worked up about this Knight Rider being so much like the old one. All I have to say to those people is THIS IS THE 21st CENTURY!! LOL 3) I have a really cool idea for a future episode if the writer's of this show are interested in hearing it...
YOU GUYS SHOULD MAKE A KNIGHT RIDER GAME WITH ALL OF KITT'S AND KARR'S FEATURE'S THAT WAY WE COULD CHOOSE TO BE GOOD OR BAD BUT PLEASE PUT ATTACK MODE 4X4 MODE AND EVERYTHING BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULDN'T WANT TO BUY A GAME WITH NO FEATURES ON IT. Hi David,
I must say, a well written episode. Loved the banter between Mike and KITT. I grew up watching the 80s KR. When the 2008 movie aired, I was thrilled to see KR coming back as a continuation. Especially since KITT is a Mustang. I love the new 'Stangs. I became even more thrilled when the show went to series for this past fall. I really enjoy the direction this new KR is going. The pilot movie and the episodes you've written have been superb. Some of the other episodes this season have been good too. I am not one of these nitpickers that complains about everything. I'm rather pleased with the trasnformations and such. Especially when he went old school Mustang. I am sad they killed of Bruce's character. Here's to hope of a Second Season and the possible return of Charles. BTW, I do not want to see/hear old KI2T, nor the Hoff. If I do, I'll go buy the TOS DVDs. To you and everyone involved with KR08, keep up the good work
One more thing
I find it interesting the episodes are being named after certain song titles and/or lyrics. Beatles (Hard Days Knight), Metallica (Exit Light, Enter Knight), and Rush (Fly by Night)
:)
Started a facebook page for NBC to run a season of Knight Rider

PLEASE BRING IT BACK NEXT SEASON LOVE THE SHOW
We Miss you David. Any new projects?
I don't like the fact that the new Kitt transforms into different vehicles. Its ok for it to transform into Attack Mode but not into different vehicles. It just looks too fake the show should make it look a
little bit more realistic. The old Kitt never transformed into anything back in the 80's. I'm pretty sure alot of fans like myself agree with this! However I do believe the show is doing a great job and I wouldn't want it to cancel!
