Knight Rider

KNIGHT FEVER

Easily the most frustrating episode of the season. Originally, “Knight Fever” was conceived and shot as the 2nd episode of the season for us (to air back in early October). The idea was to have Kitt contract a tech-eating virus (think Ebola for machines) and nearly die. Well, that’s what we shot and planned to put on screen – the special effects were another matter entirely. Turns out it’s harder to make a virus look cool on screen than we ever expected. Two special effects teams and seven months later, we sort of realized that less is more. The virus you see now is the result.

Here’s another issue—we shot this episode way back in July, well before Kitt developed his current “personality.” He was supposed to be a little more robotic and so Mike’s and Sarah’s responses to him in the original script were more like that of a big brother or big sister talking to their much younger, far less experienced sibling. But now the episode airs as number ten, and Kitt’s AI is much more developed. The solution? Re-write all of Kitt’s dialogue to fit. Easy, right? Think again. Imagine you were having a conversation with your seven year-old brother, then you have exactly the same conversation six months later – except the seven year-old is now eighteen. I doubt the answers would be the same, (though I gotta admit, I’m still kinda the same dude I was when I was seven). Anyway, we’ve already shot both Mike’s and Sarah’s sides of the conversations – way back in July. But now we have to change Kitt’s entire attitude -- his point of view, his “feelings” about what’s taking place. All new dialogue. It took some doing.

In the end, I think turning episode 2 into episode 10 ended up falling under the banner of the “law of unintended consequences” -- meaning it turns out it makes more sense in the new slot than the old. We know Kitt really well by now, and we understand how much he means to Mike and Sarah and vice-versa. And despite Mike and Sarah’s relative coolness toward one another lately, it’s clear their love and friendship is still rock solid.

Plus, a tech-eating virus seems like it really could happen pretty soon, doesn’t it?

See you in '09,
Matt

This was one of my favorite episodes along with Knight of the Living Dead! I really liked how this turned out. Great work! Even if it was difficult for you to do, it turned out great!

I think you mean episode nine. ;)

I was expecting this episode to be an all out train wreck due to how it was pushed back and being put on such a bad night. But it was much better than I expected to the point that I'm disappointed that NBC pushed it back so far. How much reshooting was there aside from changing KITT's dialog/delivery?

The only thing that bugged me really was that the nano virus somehow avoided the EMP with no explaination. The flying thing I'll let slide. :P

To really get a feel for it though I need to watch it again to see if it holds up, admittedly I wasn't paying that much attention due to distractions from a KR related chatroom on a certain KR site that is online. :P

Sorry, but this was nothing like a good episode. I hope the reboot episodes have better writing or KR is dead. It's like nobody ever learned what a plot hole is - like how if Mike gave chase to the motorcycle in the beginning the episode would have been ten minutes long. Seriously, this is high school level writing and cannot be the work of "professionals".

It doesn't bother me that he did not chase the motorcycle as he had 3 dying or dead guys in the trailer. I really enjoyed the episode. Ryan is hot. Wish he wasn't dead and could be brought back .....

Happy New Year 2009 to Matt and everyone at Knight Rider!

"And despite Mike and Sarah’s relative coolness toward one another lately, it’s clear their love and friendship is still rock solid." Ah yes, one of the main reasons I watch KR. The handhold between Mike and Sarah at the end was endearing! Thanks for keeping the Mike/Sarah-ness "rock solid" without all the melodrama. :)

Billy and Zoe were great as usual! The scene with Zoe and the ax, along with Billy and the scream, added a nice comical moment during the evacuation.

Good save especially with this episode being shot back in July. Unfortunately, I did notice that KITT had a little less spark in his personality in this episode. It all makes sense now with this explanation.

I cannot wait to see what appears to be KARR in the promo and what 2009 brings for our hero!

Awesome ep. Was also expecting a trainwreck... but one of my favorite episodes so far. Looking forward to the rest, and hope that even for new years eve (a crappy time)..the ratings were passable.

That was so great! It made me feel sorry for KITT. I loved the end where Mike and Sarah hold hands. Love without all the soap opera stuff is good. This is sooo great! I can't wait until the next one!

Suprised it's not one of the full episodes on the site, yet. I missed half of it, on Wednsday. I always love the loving and hand holding!

I can related when you have an idea and then making it come true is harder than it sounds/looks. It would be interesting if you guys decided to add in some older super vechicles, like bringing back the original KITT or even a cameo of streethawk, Viper, Team Knight Rider. Good luck in your endevours, would like to see a second Knight Rider season.

The fact that Mike didn't give chase at the beginning is not a plot hole. Clearly you weren't paying attention. He was nowhere near KITT and they were not expecting any mortorcycle to be able to work anymore, they were in shock and didn't have a chance to react. Plus when have you ever seen any show/movie that didn't have a situation where had the hero's acted a little different the show would be ten minutes long. Some people will complain about anything.

I am relieved to hear that this was an earlier shoot, when I saw KITT's license plate I was slightly disappointed and knew a lot of fans would be a lot more upset about it than me, but then I thought about it and actually said to my wife that it was probably an earlier shoot, so not only do we not have to hear complaints about the license plate, but I get to say I was right which is always nice

Hi, I would like to know if KITT will remain as the 2008 Mustang model, or if they are going to change him into the 2009 model?

Let's see, where to start.

First of all, welcome back, and Happy New Year! It was nice to wake up and realize that it was Wednesday and I had something to look forward to on TV. (I still don't watch TV unless I happen to be wandering past when something else is on. My computer has a DVD player and I work from home, so keeping track of what time it is has become a lost skill.) I guess I'd better keep up with the constructive criticism, too, since I've only got five more episodes to write about!

Well, it certainly shows that this was supposed to be Episode Two. Kitt isn't himself, Mike is jealous of Ryan and holds Sarah's hand, and Mike tells Kitt he's 'just a machine' and doesn't have feelings 'like a person'? Those make WAY more sense coming after Shining Armor. The continuity fumble there was absolutely jarring, and it felt like what little character development Mike has shown was just negated. (He stopped telling Kitt that Kitt doesn't have feelings; having him deny them at this point was like a punch in the gut. SOMEONE has to be on Kitt's side. And he told Sarah that he wants to keep the professional and the personal very separate, which is the single smartest thing he's said so far.) Billy and Zoe definitely needed their little 'Karr Lives' moment a lot earlier, too-- it at least would have given them some dimension early on, which they sorely needed at that point. Not to mention the quality of writing dipped.

Putting this episode in the New Year's Eve slot wasn't a bad idea, as it hopefully won't affect ratings too badly for the rest of the season. I hope Fever is in the right place on the DVD set.

I wish I could go from the 'that explains it' paragraph straight into praise for everything else, but unfortunately I have a few more gripes... even though some of them are explained away by this being Episode Two, too.

Sarah. I'm still very, very tired of Sarah. Everything about her in this episode grated, from "I hate it when people call me 'girly'" in the EXACT same tone as "I hate needles" to Ryan Arrow finding her so terribly unforgetttable that her name is the password to his unstoppable metal-killing virus-- not s4r4h or 54rah or 7th0 or something that makes sense as a password. I know that a lot of people like her and are rooting for her and Mike to get back together, but she just grates on me. I am not unique; most of the KR fans I'm friends with are really bothered by Sarah, to the point of being upset that she's not one of the characters earmarked for being voted off the island come the thirteenth episode.

I see Sarah's abs made a comeback-- I am NOT sad that the Bikini of the Week seems to be fading out, or at least applied to the Babe of the Week more often than to series regulars.

The Sarah/Mike relationship. Thankfully, this episode being aired out of order means I don't really need to beg you to stop ramming it down our collective throats, but just... keep it in mind, please? Just because they were childhood sweethearts doesn't mean they have to end up in True Love Forever. There's no chemistry. There's no spark. There's nothing that makes me think Mike is in love with her-- that he LOVES her, yes, but he grew up with her, they were probably together a lot and I don't doubt Mike tried to adopt himself into Sarah's family, but not that he's still in love with her. There's nothing that makes me think Sarah is in love with Mike-- obsessed with him, yes, wanting to regain what's hers, that she loves him because she's known him forever, but again, there doesn't seem to be any depth of feeling. Even this 'early' when the hand-holding made sense and carried over from a previous episode.

WHY are people so afraid of Kitt developing emotions? And not people who might have a reason to deny it, like Charles and Torres, who know more about Karr and his development than they're letting on, but Sarah, and, that early on, Mike. People who should be going "OMG awesome the computer can feel DUDE we are so cool look what we DID!" are instead going "nope, nope, just an anomaly, no, I didn't hurt his feelings, Mike, he doesn't HAVE feelings." (As a side note, both the original Karr (or this Karr-- I dunno, he's got a different acronym, could be a different AI, I'm still hedging most of my bets) and the original Kitt could both feel and both eventually admitted to it, or at least stopped denying it. If Ki3t is 'the most advanced AI in the world,' I'm assuming that Ki2t and Karr are either destroyed or missing and presumed destroyed. Particularly when someone who should know about them touts Ki3t as the apex of AI. Even some of his more practical cognitive functions are a step back from theirs, if emotional development doesn't count towards advancement.)

Regarding the special effects, none would have been more in this case. The plot of this episode tested the strength of my willing suspension of disbelief to the limits-- I might've been willing to buy the visible, metal-eating computer virus on a show like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Gargoyles or something, but on a show that isn't a cartoon and doesn't have a lot of magic kicking around, it made me facepalm. If the characters hadn't reacted to it, I would've assumed it was a 'camera trick' to show the audience where the bug was. (Also? Nanovirus is a real word, concerning virii that affect DNA. For the record.)

Randomly... Broseph? I think? What the heck was that? I'll admit I get most of my current slang from this here series of tubes, but what the heck was that?

There WERE occasional bits of win. The 'steel plate' comment made me snicker, even if other folk I've talked to wondered why that, specifically. Didn't bother me, I knew it was just an in-joke. I liked Kitt admitting that he didn't want to die, even though we've already seen him admit that-- if I were watching this episode in its proper place, that would've been even more heartwrenching, and I wanted to hug the poor guy. I liked Mike covering for Kitt, and assuring Kitt that he would. I liked Billy and Zoe talking about Karr and the virus. I liked seeing Mike angry, for some reason-- he's good at it, I guess. And I liked Zoe taking 'cut the internet' literally, even if I did see that in Transformers back in 07.

In conclusion, this was definitely episode two, and I wouldn't have found so much to complain about if it had been aired in order. I have higher hopes for next week. The previews and the voice casting for Karr have got me with my fingers crossed.

This ep was fantastic! It was a great way to start my New Year's evening :) KITT and Mike are finally coming together the way I've wantedt to see them. And the story development involving all characters has shown me that we haven't seen anything yet!!

Hat how many episodes is it going to take before you get over your jealousy of Sarah's looks? The chemistry is great between the two of them, and every post I've read from you just makes you sound like an obsessed stalker that thinks she is the only one good enough for Justin Bruening. Everyone I talk to loves her character, male and female alike.

Dear Anonymous: I hold Sarah Graiman in the same light as Orlando Bloom. Pretty, but good for nothing else. Her characterisation sucks. And anyone who can't see that she's the Wesley Crusher of Knight Rider: TNG isn't exactly someone I'd want to associate with - which is probably why you and I haven't spoken.

Enjoy your opinions. God knows I love mine. :)
