Knight Rider

KNIGHT OF THE IGUANA

Okay, at the end of tonight’s truly kick ass episode of KNIGHT RIDER – “Knight of the Iguana” – you might be asking yourself: “Did they or didn’t they?” Happily, for the sake of this blog, this is a question that I think is key to both the central idea of this episode and to the actual experience of making this episode. “Did they or didn’t they” made this episode fun to create… and fun to watch.

I will explain.

Oh, and by “I” I mean me, Rob Wright, who wrote the episode and helped with the production of it.

Anyway, at its core, I think this episode is about people forced out of their comfort zones and into areas where nothing is as it seems. Mike is forced to confront his fear of water; Billy and Zoe must leave the KittCave for the first time and venture out into the field; Sarah has to deal with whatever’s going on with her and Mike (and Zoe); even robots Lisa and Katie get out of their usual groove and have fun in the show’s opening super-soaker fight. So… once out in the open, how will they react? What will they do?

Point is, when it comes to this episode, before the first “KI Cobra” missile even hits, there’s anticipation and excitement – and then we’re in Mexico and underwater and about to blow up a nuclear power plant and… you get the idea.

Now, how does this relate to the making of the episode? Well, this was a BIG episode. We had to shoot on the water (time-consuming, lots of variables)… we had to shoot out in the desert (time-consuming, lots of snakes)… we had to shoot underwater and then launch a missile at a nuclear power plant that doesn’t really exist (lots of visual effects which takes tons of time to create).

In other words, every day of making this episode was filled with the excitement and anxiety of “Did we or didn’t we?” Did we find a decent beach? Do our actors know how to handle themselves in the water? Did we get the last shot before it got too dark? Will we get the next shot before the tide comes in? If we shift scenes in editing, will everything still make sense? Will all the visual effects be finished in time and look good? When confronted with all this, how will we react; what will we do?

I’m pleased to say in every case, our cast and crew rose to the occasion. This was my first episode with most of these folks, and I can tell you, objectively speaking, they rock. Hard. We’re talking about cast showing up at the crack of dawn so we can get the right shot, special effects guys busting ass for weeks in a row so the robots and gunfire work right, visual-effects crews sleeping in their offices so that all their ones-and-zeros add up to a SubmarineKitt that would make Glen A. Larson proud.

So… back to the original question: Did they or didn’t they? And now I’m talking about Mike and Zoe – aka “Devon and Bonnie” (which is, of course, a tip of the hat to the OGKR). Knowing that they’ll be working side-by-side on cases for who knows how long, I really don’t think they’d do anything to mess up that relationship for who knows how long – tequila or not.

Still… they had fun.

To the writers of the Knightrider show:

To be completely honest, I think the new show sucks... It has potential, but it sucks as is right now. I've been a long time fan of the knightrider series and would like to offer you my view point on how this show could really become a hit.

First, less CGI and more plot. The shots of kit underwater looked like a cheap video game and takes away from the beauty of the car and the dramatic nature of the scene right after the rocket blast. You guys and gals have to do a better job at creating half way believable scenes that keep your viewers on the edge of their seat. It totally ruins the scene if kit looks 100 percent animated and so does the water their were supposed to be in. When the Matrix movie trilogy added too much CGI imagery the general acceptance of those movies went way down.. even though it still sold well. The matrix succeeded based on his first release hit.. thats a luxury this show doesnt have.

Secondly, Kitt and micheal are the show. Focus less on NEON lights under kits undercarriage, and the obviously cheap looking air shaker on top of the hook when he is in attack (PURSUIT!) mode. Also, attack mode looks horrible. The CGI transforamtion looks cool, but the final product is very weak. In the old show when KITT changed to pursuit mode you knew the fins and spoilers were there to assist in that high speed mode.. What the heck does drag racing rubber in the back and skinner looking tires have to do with attack/pursuit mode on this show? Change the whole thing, make the attack mode sequence about function, not looks. When KITT goes into attack mode.. if you are going to name it that.. show me a rocket pod that pops out of the side vent, Show changes in the wheel package that increase braking and high speed cornering. God if you have to mix in some CGI, show me how KITT is re-mapping his fuel curve to boost power output. You have to remember that you are trying to appeal to an audience that probably knows more about car modification and high performance than the average viewer back during the orginal series. Please do away with all the fancy gadgets in KITT's cockpit. Show us more about how KITT is learning to work with MK, you have thus far failed to create a bond between man and machine. Micheal Knight or the actor that portrays him lacks the swagger of David H. But i think thats a script problem.. not the fault of the actor.

In closing i would like to say i really would like to see this show become a hit. I offer my two cents in hopes that it reaches the writers and they atleast listen to what i have taken the time to type here. Also, one last request.. get rid of the stationary command center, and the hoses that connect to KITT, but there are no connections for them. Go back to a mobile center and the Knight Industries trailer!

I second that. You have some good points there.
And give us more stunts, driving on two wheels and such stuff instead of transformations.
Knight Rider is no competition for Transformers, so KR should do what KR can do best.

So basically, Carlos, in your second paragraph, you're saying you want them to insert a lot of stuff that only you will notice? If you really do want this show to be a hit, and you only offer your "two cents" as helpful hints to show what YOU would like to see, to keep YOU tuned in, you might not want to begin your diatribe by saying it "sucks." Not exactly the best way to get your point across...

so Rob, you're saying they DIDN'T do it?!?!?! aw... I was hoping they did. but I can still hope right? I mean, it's still one of things that only Zoe and Mike know what really happened, right?!?!

i think they definitely did it.

LOVED IT!! Keep it going!! Wish you guys would take on K.A.R.R!! Thanks Guys!!
PS LOVE THE NEW K.I.T.T!

Nice tip of the hat to the OGKR but I humbly beg you leave the "crew" at home. KR was meant to be Michael and his car. Team Knight Rider failed....please dont let this be that show it is already looking too much like it now. *Begs* Ive been waiting a long time for a quality Knight Rider again, I dont want to see your ratings dive before you can change the flaws in this. Thank you.

This was the best episode so far. I understands where all you purists are coming from, but you need to accept the fact that this is a NEW and DIFFERENT show - espescially you Carlos. Your comments reveal how much you know about Knight Rider but how little you know about making film, TV or working in effects. Just lean back and enjoy it.

I liked the episode quite a bit. Well done! More zoe and less Sarah please! :)

If this is a "NEW and DIFFERENT" show with really none of the old premise, then why call it Knight Rider? Why not come up with a new and original show. I understand that the technology has to be different and that that characters would have changed, but the main point of Knight Rider was about one man (and his car) making a difference. This could have been called something else. I do like this show, it just isn't what Knight Rider is about.

To clarify, i think anyone that was a serious fan of the knightrider series would identify with the comments i made about how the show as shot and the detail. Im saying if "I" noticed that the neon lights are so unnecessary, that the attack mode looks horrible etc.. then maybe im not the only one. The show doesnt suck. Sorry i was a bit emotional after watching the episode. I'd really like to see like the other poster said.. more stunts.. more action from KITT.. i dont recall seeing KITT drive himself yet.. dont tell me he has to learn how to drive himself too.. the AI cant be that bad. Its a good show, but the writers do have some work to do.

First I want to congratulate the writers, producers, cast and crew for a wonderful job....I LOVED this latest episode, can't wait for the next one...and as far as some of the comments posted on this website, I think too many ppl are confusing the concept of this new show. The show is a continuation of the old series, at least, that's how I see it...Michael Knight aka Michael Long passed on the torch to his estranged son Mike Traceur aka Michael Knight when he told him what one day Wilton Knight had told him that ONE MAN CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE....True the new KITT lacks the original KITT's humanity but it's still learning so hopefully it will catch up...all am saying is, let's not criticize this show by saying that is not like the old series, cuz, is not suppose to be like the old series, this is a totally new concept, with new ideas for a new generation, after all we do have to change with the times, I am a big fan of the old series, I watched it when it first aired back in 1987 so i guess that makes me pretty old, hehehe..but i totally love the new KITT and I wish you and everyone involved with this new series MUCH SUCCESS....Keep those episodes coming.

FYI, if you want to show KITT underwater, it would help to have some bobbing action with the camera and some BUBBLES. BUBBLES = underwater, every self respecting visual artist knows this. This is the detail the episode is lacking that shatters any credibility to believe KITT is a "sub". Somehow I doubt even Syd Mead would be proud of the "sub mode" effect which I might also add didn't show any transformation whatsoever.

Also since you are a writer, if your whole drive of the episode to include Zoe was because, "she knows how to surf" how come she never once gets on a surf board? Was this cut from your original draft?

Why don't you post what was taken out of your script, it would be infinately more informative then an academy award speech thanking everyone who keeps you working.

We don't need to read kudos on a blog like this. You are writers and we fans we want to hear answers...real answers.

We want to know why you're doing the things you're doing to a franchise we greatly admire after you've done them. Please no more of these "keep watching" responses, it answers nothing.

As far as the visual effects, the devil is always in the details and I believe audiences are more sophisticated enough to know when they're out of place.

Which is it? a fun, campy, popcorn action show that doesn't take itself seriously? Or is it a reality based situation grounded in a more realistic fashion for a more sophisticated audience?

You preach about understanding the original series premise, yet so far you do little to honor it.

Why is every hero in this show either dark, tainted, or has something to hide? You're implying even Knight Industries is corrupt. Is this what heroism has become? Consider your audience and the messages you're sending to your "demographic".

Totally agree with the last comment. Details are serioiusly lacking, which is what i argued most in my orginal comment about the show in general.

It was a pretty good episode and the thing with Mike and Zoe if they did it or not was classic! You can't drink that much Tequila and not finding yourself do things you don't usually do. I think they did. I always want to add that I was a little disapointed that we didn't see Sarah show just a hint of jealousy and curiosity as to wanting to know if Mike and Zoe did it. That would show the viewers that she still holds Mike true to heart.

Just want to say the last show was great!. But you seriously need to change that voice!! It really sucks. Second, what was the name of that song that was playing when kitt was going down the road next to the beach with the surfboards ontop of his car??

I'm liking the show more and more despite the imperfections. This episode with Zoe was fantastic. Despite the quirky fun, Zoe was in charge the whole time. I think the writers should take lessons from this and loosen Michael's and Sarah's roles a bit. Isn't this the whole point of under cover? Otherwise, I totally agree with more Zoe and less Sarah. If you can't do that, give Zoe (Smith Cho) her own show. I'm there!

the original kit was campy this one could be ok if it wasnt a repeat too often may as well order a movie or surf the web one of the 3 nights a week your stacking tv shows.

“Knight of the Iguana” *½
I thought the second episode was a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, this episode negated all of that. I’m not sure who the target audience of this show is anymore. I really don’t think it’s for fans of the original series.

I know a lot of people are working very hard to produce and write this show, but everything is just terribly misguided. There continues to be very little evidence of a natural evolution from the Knight Foundation for Law and Government of 1986 to the Knight Industries of 2008.

I’ve heard rumors KARR is coming back somewhere episodes 14-17. I’m pretty nervous about this. I have a feeling the “realities” of the storylines from 1982 and 1984 will be completely ignored.

SOME THOUGHTS ON THE WRITING:
I think the humor that’s being added into the writing is, on the whole, pretty good. The water fight wasn’t exactly masculine—but I can see how it plays out better on paper. Mike’s responses concerning his relationships are funny, but these relationship stories are getting too much like a soap opera.

I felt kind of like Torres giving them the names “Devon” and “Bonnie” was sort of like the writers were saying, “See we remember the original series? Now quit complaining.” I was insulted. My argument all along has been that people working for Knight Industries should know who those people are—they should be connected to them in some way. That scene just reinforced my believe that this show isn’t emotionally connected to the original series.

SOME THOUGHTS ON THE PRODUCTION:

FIRST something POSITIVE: I’m very glad to hear popular music weaved throughout the show. This was something the original series did, and it works even better here. As long as it fits the story/mood—it’s great.

The scoring, however, is awful. There’s nothing unique about it. There are no recognizable themes, new or old. Where is the Michael Knight hero fanfare? Where is the FLAG anthem? Where are the sus4 chords when KITT enters the scene? The techno beats and the heavy metal guitars—just don’t connect with me emotionally. It sounds like the score is just being whipped up in Apple Garage Band. The music works in a Ford commercial—it doesn’t work with Knight Rider. I hope the composer isn’t under contract for the new four episodes that were added. Maybe you can try someone who will listen to Don Peake’s original work and evolve it from 1986 to 2008. That would go along way to connecting emotionally with the original series.

The submarine mode was too much. It looked beyond fake. If the VFX team doesn’t have the time or the money to do it right, please don’t make them do it. If anyone has plans to make KITT turn into a plane, please cancel them. This was not impressive. I was embarrassed to be watching when the car was a submarine—like someone in their late twenties just has no business watching this show. It looked like it was for children—but then all the talk about sex and Zoe in a bikini—I don’t know who it’s for.

I understand the challenges of producing an hour drama with special effects week after week, but the show is just too reliant on CGI and green screens—and it’s taking away from the believability. There was something more genuine about the driving scenes in the original series, because the light fell across the inside of the car perfectly since the car was actually on the road. In-studio driving has certainly come a long way since “The Dukes of Hazzard” but even in 2008, it still feels fake.

Know somebody the song list from Knight in the Iguana

Know somebody the song list from Knight in the Iguana

Could we make it possible for Kitt to save the day instead of Sarah driving Kitt to save the day? Kitt may still be learning but he also needs to be backup for Mike.

Well, i can see that i am not the only one who thinks that the show has alot of grouund to cover.

Agreed Carlos O. Maybe Episode 4 will be the most like the original yet, since it's clearly a copy of "Dead of Knight."

The song "Michael (Jump In)" by No More Kings captures the emotion and sprit of Knight Rider a hundred times more than the show has. Michael saves the world with his car.

Too much focus on trying to look cool
, not enough focus on the simple message.

Episode 2 rocked. Episode 3 didn't work for me. Too much character. Not enough plot. The Team thing on missions works best when the team are in the Kitt Cave.

Let Michael and Kitt go off on their own please. Don't take the girls with them.

Kitt effectively left Michael on his own, with a possible arms merchant, in the water with waves that could have killed him.

I love the show -- loved episode 2. I wasn't fond of this episode.

Yes, even though there have only been a handful of shows so far, I think this was the worst of them all. I can't stand Zoe or whatever her name is, and what happened to KITT being called upon to save Michael in situations?

Is there anyway you (the production team on KR) could stop using so much green screen for conversations while driving? I dunno if other shows do it but for some reason it's very distracting - especially when it's obvious they're on a set (say the exterior wide shots show blacked out windows, and the conversation shots show clear windows.) And the shots rarely match up very well to the wider shots. It seems the technique is being tweeked... I'm not extremely picky about KR cause we all know they made mistakes in the original and they were ignored easily but...they did conversation shots outside I thought..Of course if they'd blue screened them then Michael would have constantly had a blue halo!

I enjoy the new KR, however I would kinda like a slimming down of the cast but no one is particularly annoying. Though Sarah felt extremly tacked on to this episode. I liked the back and forth with Zoe and Michael (and the whole did they didn't they THEY DID. He wouldn't be a proper Michael Knight Jr. if they didn't. LOL) Though with a cast so big - Kitt seems almost forgotten as a -character- . I don't know if your formats/contracts can work this way but perhapes only using characters when they're actually needed instead of jamming them in any way possible would be better. Star Trek the Next gen had a bad bad habit of cramming their chars in just so they'd have scene no matter how rediculous it was amidst the rest of the storyline.

One of OGKR's charm was the small cast and Michael and Kitt's travels and interactions with other people. It was a twist on the buddy show. I hope there will be some classic like Kitt and kid/idiot/jerk/large wild animal scenes. They were cheesy but still funny. LOL

And lovely nod to the opening credits of the old show last week.

If I might also ask: Is there any chance at all that the original KITT will turn up in any form? Perhapes the new KITT would pose as him or something? :-)

I hope that you can keep this K.I.T.T. going. I remember watching this show with my Dad when I was yunger, and I loved it then and I love it mor enow. My Dad and I love sitting together watching Knight Rider!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!
