Camerawork on the show

I've been getting a lot of comments on the camerawork – some pro and some negative. I got similar comments after the film. It's definitely not our intention to make anyone dizzy or sick; however, we are attempting to achieve a realistic visual look and sometimes that calls for moving the cameras in ways that traditional films does not. We will continue to be active with our cameras; however, we are also sensitive to the fact that people might pass out if we're not careful, so we're looking to find the balance.

I just had to stop watching the show because I am feeling so dizzy. I really like the show and would watch it if it didn't make me sick. I hope they can find a way to correct this.

I understand that there is a creative wanting, to seperate the show from other 'just drama' shows, but I have to agree with the shaky camera complaints.

Wanting it to seem 'real' or 'like a documentary' is great, but please at least cut it down another 20% or so (still from the changes that might have been made in the past year).

Good luck and I hope you keep the viewers you have!

Obligatory "shaky" camera style in every scene makes this show unwatchable. Use it for ACTION scenes if you must, but use a still camera for straight dialog. Otherwise the show is doomed because the small minority who love this style ain't enough to give you the audience share you need to keep it going.

a one word recommendation... STEADYCAM!

The shaky camera work and the looking around people and objects in the foreground make this show diffcult to watch and actually enjoy. The show, the characters, the actors and the story lines are excellent. Why are they F'ing it up with the amateurish camera work?

P.S. While it may make the far away football field action shots "more real" the shaking cameras do NOT make closeups of someone crying more "real"! When is the last time you were standing by someone who was crying and jumping up and down and rolling your head all around??!!

I have read in recent weeks that the ratings for FNL are not what they had hoped for OR what they should be.

In my opinion (and a LOT of other viewers obviously) it is primarily due to the shaky cameras (especially during dramatic/emotional scenes) and the inappropriate MTV-like "zillion edits a minute" style.

I think it's so sad for these wonderful actors because it's obvious they have great talent (and a great script) but it's lost on viewers because of decisions made by "some" who refuse to listen to the valid input being given loud and clear here and elsewhere.

People WANT TO WATCH the show! People LOVE THE SHOW but literally CANNOT watch it because it makes them ill! But it's not just that!

The shaky handhelds are especially a poor choice when filming closeup dramatic scenes. Not only does it make some people ill, it completely takes away from the viewer's ability to "lose themselves" in the characters and their feelings/emotions. It literally distracts the viewers "away" from the characters!

That ability for the audience to "lose themselves" is KEY to having viewers "latch on" to the characters in the show.

The same goes for the "zillion edits a minute" style which is inappropriate for serious dramatic scenes.

Before it is too late, I sure hope SOMEONE will listen. It is so sad that the primary reason for the less than stellar ratings is something that CAN BE FIXED!!!

What a shame. The longer it goes on, the less likely the ratings will be able to recover. Some viewers only give a show "one chance" so each week, more NEW potential viewers/fans are being lost.

To everyone else involved with the other elements of the show..GREAT JOB!

Signed..WANT TO WATCH (BUT CAN'T)

Never written to a show - the camera work definitely makes me have motion sickness. Count me among those who love the show but will have to stop watching if they don't stop the Blair Witch cameras.

The camera work does make people sick.

Come on guys! If it was a steady cam, it would look like all the other lame tv shows out there right now. It's the grittiness and the voyeuristic-quality of the camera that makes it authentic. You actually feel like you're standing on the sidelines, or in the hospital room, or in the car. NBC, please don't change a thing. The directing, casting, cinematography, acting is brilliant. THANK YOU!

It is really a pity that a decent story line has to be ruined by poor camera work. The Bourne Identity was the same way; all the chase scenes seemed to be filmed by a child with a camera strapped to their hand. It just makes the whole thing unwatchable.

Cough up a little $$ for a decent camera man.

I too love this show and will continue watching because it is one of the best written shows currently on TV. My only negative comment from the beginning has been the shaky camera. I appreciate that the unique perspective in filming is part of what is necessary to get the gritty, personal feel, however clearly it is physically upsetting to people. Is there a way to achieve this effect without so much of the shaking?

Enough of the constant handheld camera. It just seems too amateur in most of the scenes. Please use this technique more sparingly.

Not a fan of the shaky camera, as i see enough of that on my home videos, but I love the show. Very compelling and engaging drama. A little more humour injected into the show would be good - i don't believe everyone in high school is that glum, spinal injuries not withstanding.

Ladies and gentlemen, that was Steve, the apparent target audience of Peter "Vomit Man" Berg. He'll be here all week.

As the ratings continue to sag, NBC seems desperate, and is moving the show to Mondays at 10pm. Though NBC is committing to more scripts.

I hope that means the back nine won't be shot with Vomit Cam.

Idiots like Steve don't seem to understand that motion sickness is not something we can control. I want to watch this show. I love football.

Movie theaters showing the Blair Witch Project had to put a warning on the screen telling people to leave (and get their money back) if they felt sick to their stomachs because of vomit cam. Because you will throw up if you try to suck it up and ignore the sickness. Ushers got tired of cleaning up vomit after each showing.

I don't see why NBC is willing to throw way 10-20% of the audience for this show on a childish gimmick like Vomit Cam. It doesn't add authenticity, it just makes people sick.

Dang, some of you are the biggest bunch of pansies I have ever heard in my life. "oh the camera makes me sick!", "the shaky camera is making me dizzy!". Geez, no wonder all the commercials on TV cater to some sort of body pain or medicine to cater to you wimps. I honestly never noticed the camera being so shaky until you guys mentioned it. Bunch of babies! If you don't like it, go watch the gay Dance show. It's right up your alley.

I have never written to a show before, but I felt it was important to voice my opinion on the camera work. It is awful. That shaky filming works for long shots, but up close it is truly nausiating. You have a great story, I would love to continue watching, but if the wiggly camera work isn't toned down, I won't be watching.

Thank you. Lisa, Carlsbad, CA

I just don't think the Blair Football Project was a smart idea.

Please STOP the awful camera motion! I think the show will be great if I could stand the shaky camera, but I am not sure I can! I think you will loose an important segment of your demographic if you continue this style of camera work. It is so over, now! It's been done! Use your great actors and writers to tell the story!

Please don't stop with this beautiful camera work. Maybe I'm just used to handheld having seen a lot of documentary, but neither I nor my wife even noticed the movement - we only loved the way it was shot. I realize you want to find a balance, which is fine, I just hope you don't balance the camera into total stable, static equilibrium. As for the rest of the show, it's been a long time since TV (esp. a show on broadcast TV) has gotten to me this deeply. Kyle Chandler could not be more perfect and the rest of the cast is fabulous as well. Good luck, and keep it up!

NBC has an unfortunate history of acquiring/producing programs with such amateurish camera technique. The worst thus far has been the mini-series "10.5: Apocalypse", with this new series following closely.

Directors and producers will use any number of justifications to utilize either extreme camera motions, or the more subtle (and more annoying, frankly) 'cinéma vérité' technique of the shaky, handheld camera.

Camera work should be motivated, and their is no motivation for using this technique during the dramatic portions of this show. During the games, sure, but not during the story portions, even if the intent is to portray a faux documentary. Most documentarians shoot much more smoothly than the dramatic presentations which utilize this tired technique, with the exceptions of reporters under fire. The charge up Omaha Beach in "Saving Private Ryan" seems to have done much to promoted this technique, but it was actually truly motivated and justified in that example.

Thankfully, I have fought the NBC owned cable channel I have directed for over this issue, and won. It may 'help' a weaker program in the executive's eyes, but this show is filled with enough talent and good performances that it merely detracts from it.

NO STATIONARY CAMERAS!!!!!! I love the unique look and feel of the show. It didn't seem bouncy or shaky to me at all. Don't change a thing!

Unfortunately, I had to stop watching about halfway through the episode. I felt physically sick, and I know from experience it doesn't go away.

I don't think shaking the camera adds realism. It just makes you more aware someone is holding a camera. It makes the show look like one of Bob Saget's home videos.

I wanted to love this show. It seemed great. I loved Bissinger's book, too. I'm going to have to pass, though. I was still feeling sick a half-hour after turning it off.

Please stop the bouncy camerawork, it makes me really dizzy. I know you want to make it more realistic but this is way too much!!! I really like the show, but if the camerawork doesn't improve, I will be forced to watch something else. Thanks.

Camera work is outstanding--authentic, gritty, feels like a docudrama in some ways. Very classy. Loved the whole show, from minute one and on.

That is my only comment on this marvelous, sensitive, compelling show. Please use stationary cameras!!! I get enough inconsistency in my day, I don't need to swim around watching my tv shows at night. I don't know whose bright idea this was (it's NOT just your show) but I would hate to see it dull Friday Night Lights. I had to click to another station more than once just to settle down. I can't watch with all the bouncy stuff. Please, I love the show. Love Kyle Chandler. What else have you done, I know I've seen ya somewhere......Thanks for a great show!

I think the camerawork gives the audience a "real" feel. I like it.
