Oh, I'd like to do some dancing! lots of dancing! And I do another YouTube clip...cool?

Bobby: Ok, Nadine...yeah...sure...uh...what we actually have planned is very back to basics, straight up, stand alone story list of the week kind of thing. It's going to be old school Earl, just like the original. The story telling, the resolutions, will be more self-contained whereas before we were doing a lot more cliff hangers. And so we're looking at a lot of stuff from the first season and bringing over the style of story telling that we were doing back then.

Nadine: I don't know if I was in this episode, but I loved it when Joy meets her sister. I loved that one!

Bobby: Yeah, that was an interesting one because it was super quick to create because we just found out that Jaime was pregnant so we had to bring that into the story line. So having her have a baby taht we wouldn't mind getting rid of, that it was such a specific problem to get out of so it was actually easy to solve. Too much freedom is paralyzing, and we created that storyline in just a few days. I was very proud of the structure on that. My best experiences watching was the pilot, a wedding episode, the creative writing episode from prison was a really great job production wise...I can imagine other shows doing anything that difficult in a 5-day shoot. It's rare, actually, that you conceive of something and you also get to write it...usually even just conception has a lot of cooks, but that one I got to do and I was really happy about that concept and everyone got to do different styles of acting and art styles.

P.S. Walker, I apologize for getting too heavy on that karma question if we got too deep...

Nadine: Bobby?

Bobby: This is a tough one. In theory, I disagree with the idea you do something good, then something good will have to come back to you or about earthy payback. But, in life, I train my kids with the idea that if you are generous you will reap in benefits. So, I guess I kind of do believe in it. I don't chalk up my success to pure luck, I think about the hard work I do. Clearly, I obviously do believe in it to some level and it gets practiced in my house.

Nadine: There is a part of me that wants to believe in a karmic past life. I do believe in universal law. You reap what you sow, mentalism, the law of vibration. If you live your life a certain way, certain things come your direction. I know the list of things in my black book are things I wouldn't change in my life.

Bobby: I also believe in Peter Pan!

Bobby: We're open to the actors' input, but the atmosphere is like when Lucy is in the chocolate factory...I spend most of my days trying to keep up with the chocolates so it's like a blur. So if someone came in and said "make the chocolates different" I would not really have the chance to do it. But since Greg is on stage a lot, he gets to talk back and forth with the actors, so when he talks to us, I'm not sure how much of it is from him vs. from the actors. I know it's important for us that we have a generally happy organism, both in the writers' room and on the stage...we're definitely in the business of keeping a happy family here and making sure peoples' ideas feel like they're heard.

Nadine: They definitely do keep us happy! They also write to our strengths for our characters and they are super talented and know what they're doing. I have definitely embraced Catalina and everything that's written for her. And for Jaime, she's so similar to Joy...so that's such a great thing for Jaime...it's written for her strengths so it makes so much sense.

Bobby: It takes as many as 5 or 6 weeks to feed a script from the first idea. We may toss around an idea for a long time before we can find a beginning, a middle and an end. There were even some ideas we talked about today that we first mentioned during the first season that we still haven't figured out. So sometimes just creating the broadest strokes can take a really long time. Once we know where it ends, then it typically can take about a full week to flesh it out and know what all the scenes are. That takes a couple revisions, which we write on a dry erase board. You kind of have an idea of what's funny in each scene, but it's boiled down to a simple description and a writer takes it from there...those are called board notes. So the writer takes it, makes it into an outline that's about 16 pages, which takes about 4 days or so. Then they give their notes on that, which leads into doing the script, which is 30 pages and takes a little over a week. They then bring in the writer's draft, and it takes the room about 3 days to edit that...on average about 50-70% gets changed in those 3- 3 1/2 days. Then the actors do a table read and we spend another 2 days re-writing it again. Then after we record it, we still have to rearrange some scenes because there will need to be voice over tweaks or we just want to punch some stuff up...so yeah. Also, almost every single joke we do, we end up pitching an average of like 10 alternate versions of the joke through the script's life...sometimes as many as 20 versions! In a particular episode...let's say there are 3 jokes a minute...so we usually have 700-1000 jokes getting pitched for any given episode.

I didn't think I was going to get called back. But, I was called back on the same day. I met with Greg and the casting director and before I knew it, I was at the studio and on the job. I was told I got the role of Catalina on the fourth audition.

Bobby: Can I mention she has a GREAT Russian accent?

Nadine: I had a limited run with experimenting...I always wanted to be an actress, which didn't work out for me in my teens because I didn't have parents who were resourceful. But when I was 20 I was working as an assistant for an agent, and I thought I was going to be an agent. But she basically pushed me to get headshots an go out for an audition. 3 auditions later, I booked a McDonalds commercial and after that I was hooked!
