Greg - Camden is nowhere! It's a fictional town that exists on an upside down globe.
Ethan - I can't really add to that at all...that answer's pretty perfect.

The state in which the show takes place is never mentioned, but according to the creator, Greg Garcia, the show takes place in the fictional county of Camden (not to be confused with the actual Camden Counties in New Jersey, Missouri, Georgia, and North Carolina). Creator Garcia said that the town is named after his son. The references to Maryland locations (such as Hagerstown, Cumberland, Shady Grove, and Frostburg University) are due to his familiarity with an area he hails from and that "the show doesn’t technically take place anywhere ... we like to think it’s anywhere. We don’t really say exactly where it is."

And yes, I live in Springfield, which is only an hour or so from Camden County. We don't have a nuclear plant, but the Simpsons could be based out of here. None of us have thumbs.
It's Missouri! The episode that joked about not taking sides in the Civil War gave that up. Camdem County, Mo is right in central Missouri where we were split during that time. Long live CENTRAL!
Earl's Camden is probably located somewhere near the Simpson's Springfield since both are close to whatever the writers need for the story.
on some episodes they show the 203 area code witch is Southwest Connecticut
Also, Scott in episode 7 season one talks about his wife wanting to go to colonial Williamsburg, which eludes to the fact that it is close to Virginia
I think its a fictional county in maryland considering how close it is said to be near many things in western maryland.
YOU ALL ARE FUCKING IDIOTS...I am from South Georgia and I dont act or talk anything like JOY the skank-alicious tramp....and not all Georgians are rednecks you dickheads...
I am very intellegent and this fucking show is based in a FICTIONAL town, so its NOWHERE STUPID!!!! its a fucking tv show!!!
-Rednecks
-Close to Mexico
-Close to Vegas
-Inside California
-Middle-Class Suburbia
=Unincorporated Riverside County, near Hemet.
okay. i am from GA and its not GA that the town is based on. think about how close they are to the Mexican boarder and vegas. duh! and they are not yankees!! hello! i'm thinkin Texas or some place around there.

yall crazy camden, nj is a dangerous city like the worst in america look it up, the show is about camden county in georgia people in jerzy don't got no country accents dumbass
The reason there are palm tress at the beginning is bc it's filmed on a Hollywood set silly. Kinda like how the office is set in Scranton, PA but filmed on a Hollywood set. Really dissapointing when the characters pronounce places and names wrong considering I am from there. The directors and writers should do more research. I have no idea where the actual setting for My Name is Earl is though. Writers usually have a place in there head from their own experiences, but they usually don't release that information as to not offend anybody and keep the mystery. Does Springfield (Simpsons) come into mind here?
Camden County is in south Georgia. Listen to the accents in the show; they are redneck. Go to St. Mary's GA (in Camden County) which is on the border of GA/FL and you'll see strong similarities between there and the show.
Trust me, im a trucker. Camden county new jersey is the place it is based in. That part of jersey is more rednex then georgia and texas combind. and where joys parents live in medford
is not but less than an hour from camden county new jersey. and hagerstown is only a cupl hours from camden county if that. maryland is adjacent to NJ. ;)
I went on the hunt for camden LOL. I will have to lean towards the GA theory. Only Because of the Palm trees at the start of each show.
There is a town called Camdenton right on the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri and the town is even in Camden County. I live in Missouri and believe me there are quite few interesting characters just like the show that live in that area of the state!
There's a neon sign in the shape of texas in the crab shack. I've never seen that anywhere but texas, and as for the new jersey or maryland theories i just dont see earl being a yankee!
there appears to be a camden county in New jersey as well... but earl talks about all these places in Maryland like hagerstown, (where randy goes to get one guy his dog back he had to give up for adoption) and Frostburg (where the professor, from hey dude and ben stiller's wife; christine taylor works)
there is a camden county in georgia.
Hi,
When casting for Joy what exactly were you looking for? Has Jamie advanced the character past what you thought Joy would be? She is an amazing actor. I enjoy her so much on this show.
