Greg- I am off to change a diaper and my mother is in town. So, I have to go. Good night and thank you.
Ethan- And I am off vacationing in Florida. So thank you and good night. See you next season!
May 10, 06:14 PM
Greg - Usually someone always translates her Spanish online right after the episode, but tonight's was something like "Don't you think it's silly that Earl thinks I'm talking about Joy, but really I'm just thanking you for watching My Name is Earl and I hope you tune into Season 3" or something like that.
May 10, 06:13 PM
Greg- We have five or six directors throughout the season. There are certain little things with the directors with each show. But, the show has a template and other directors usually stick to it. But, when Spielberg comes in, whatever he wants to do, he can do.
Ethan- I am not going to say who my favorite director is on the show. I completely agree with what Greg says. You can't have episodes being drastically different. When something is working, we don't change it. The communication between directors is different. I haven't had anybody that I dislike.
May 10, 06:11 PM
Greg - I'm a huge Rudy fan so the scratch-n-sniff episode was great. I've been asked this a lot, but it's hard to say since I am so close to all the episodes.
Ethan - I love that we traveled to Guadaletucky, south of the border. That was a favorite moment in an episode. I REALLY enjoyed tonight's episode with the trial. I thought it was fantastic and dealt with stuff from the entire season. The scratch-n-sniff episode was the most solid guest caster ever on TV.
May 10, 06:10 PM
Greg- I think our show has a positive message. It's about redemption, not just making fun of people. We don't make fun of people living in trailer parks, we have fun with them. Our one-legged woman is a powerful character, she just happens to have one leg. Marlee Matlin has a great sense of humor, too. We treat these people with respect.
Ethan- My favorite line is when the deaf lawyer's assistant bites into the razor and she says, "are you making fun of me?" I love that.
May 10, 06:09 PM
Greg - I hear I might be hosting at some point...I should ask my publicist.
Ethan - I will never do it, because you have to read teleprompters and I can't see well. I wear glasses in real life, and I don't want to wear glasses on SNL then I'd be stuck as a character in glasses. Without them, I wouldn't get my lines right. All that being said, no one's ever asked me to host...but I doubt it's because of the glasses.
May 10, 06:08 PM
Ethan- I relate to one-eyed Willie, oh wait, I am related to him.
Greg- I would say I relate to Slow Roger. He wears a 'What's going on?' hat. That was given to me as a present. So, I say Slow Roger. I kind of look like him and I am not happy about it.
May 10, 06:07 PM
Greg - All I can say is we've really mapped out the first half of the season, if not basically the whole season of what we plan to do. We're not gonna come back on Episode 1 and suddenly he's pardoned. We're not gonna buy it all back. We're going to take advantage of where we put him and have some fun with it. We promise not to gyp the viewers...this wasn't a dream sequence. He's actually going to jail!
May 10, 06:05 PM
Greg- There was an episode earlier called 'Randy's Touchdown'. But, it wasn't really about Randy's touchdown, so as we got notes on the script, the network people wanted it more to do with Randy because it was called "Randy's Touchdown". So, this script had two stories and I didn't want the network to concentrate on which one was more important, so I called it 'Monkeys in Space' to throw them completely off. I didn't get a lot of notes on that one.
May 10, 06:04 PM
Ethan - There were SO MANY questions about pranks that we were filming with a dead mouse once, and just to facilitate an answer to this question...I hid that mouse (which was fake) in Jaime's trailer. I believe it was rolled up in a blanket she cuddled with. She opened the blanket and out popped a dead mouse! There was a bit of screaming, and I was next door so I could quickly say it wasn't a real dead mouse. It was seriously just to say there was a prank to talk about...usually around the set it's mostly just Jason and I wrestling. Totally not in a gay way...
Greg - in a SUPER gay way. It's not just mediocre gay, it's incredibly gay!
May 10, 06:02 PM
Greg- My wife doesn't read TV Guide, so she doesn't know I said I wanted to sleep with Nadine. As for her husband, he's an agent who wants to work with me. And by season 4, I will sleep with Nadine! After a furious game of Beer Can Tag!
May 10, 06:01 PM
Greg - Creatively we thought it would be fun to know where the characters were going and NBC had some interest in wanting people to stay tuned.
Ethan - As far as easier/harder, better/worse...I like the episodes more when you leave off one and when you come back it takes over where the last one left off. Aesthetically I like it more and it doesn't make my job harder or easier at all, but in terms of my personal taste I enjoy it more.
May 10, 05:59 PM
Greg- We were going to have a shout-out to beer can tag. It was going to be the last thing of the season. Earl was going to prison and get hit by can being thrown by Sonny. But that lost out to the idea of Bad Ralph. I intended on doing it. It will show up in season 3.
May 10, 05:58 PM
Greg - We had it in a script this season about why Crabman is in Witness Protection, and then we pulled it out because we wanted to keep the mystery alive for a little bit long. The episode where he sits down to talk to the kids, we had a version where we saw why he was in witness protection. Simple answer: yes, we will find out why he's in witness protection...unless we get canceled like Kidnapped where I don't know what happened to that little kid. I should go catch up with those episodes on NBC.com after this blog.
Ethan - I just want to say to anyone who cares about Crabman's back story...IT IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. So just wait for it...seriously.
May 10, 05:57 PM
Greg- I think because The Office takes place in Scranton and Earl takes place in a phony town, I think there would be an explosion. I am not a fan of cross-overs. We work hard to make a show as real as possible, but when you see one show walking into another, it looks silly. So, maybe next season!
Ethan- I want to cross-over with a multi-camera show. But, I think it's weird. It's a season 7 episode. It's when Spielberg takes over.
May 10, 05:55 PM
Greg - I don't understand that whole re-cap thing, so I've decided to pretend it doesn't exist. The story behind WhoJackie is a long one and it's not even my story. It comes from the writers in the Roseanne room, but I can't talk about it all here. It's too long, but perhaps on the DVD I'll discuss it with the TVWOP folks...
May 10, 05:54 PM
Greg- I go online because it's like instant gratification to see what people thought about the show. I don't think it effects what we do. I just like reading things positive, I think that person who writes positive things is a genius, if the comments are negative, I think that person is an idiot!
Ethan- I don't read comments online. I once read some negative comments and I decided to never go look again.
May 10, 05:53 PM
Greg - he's not allowed to skateboard...he breaks his arm and we're screwed! His skateboarding days are over. If I see him skateboarding, he's in trouble.
Ethan - I don't even know how to skateboard. I'm too scared of things that are sliding. Same goes for skiing, water slide parks...terrible stuff, all that sliding around.
May 10, 05:52 PM
Greg- I don't know if they will go back to college. They just got their GEDs this year, so while I won't say "never," I would doubt it. Earl's going to have extra time, so maybe he could get his degree! I have heard that some people took college courses in college, I heard Tim Allen took some courses in prison. Maybe Earl can get a degree, after all.
May 10, 05:52 PM
Ethan - I think they're both totally different! I enjoy them equally, but something like a TV series would make me crazy if it was dramatic. You're working so intensely all year on the same thing, so to be able to have the levity on the set and joke around...you couldn't do that with heavy subject matter. So for the sake of TV, I am much happier doing comedy. But in movies, they're so different, I enjoy doing both of them.
May 10, 05:51 PM
Greg- Want to be an amigo after the credits? You have a very good chance. I am running out of friends. If you see me on the street, say, "hi" and you have a pretty good chance.
Ethan- If you have a sombrero, you're in!
May 10, 05:50 PM
Greg - The truth is I would've done a musical episode since it'd be goofy and funny to do, but Scrubs just did it so it'd look like we're copying them.
Ethan - You know I can sing, baby! I want to do a musical episode just to get onto American idol! I hear Scrubs is doing a scratch and sniff episode now, actually...
May 10, 05:49 PM
Ethan- I think Jason and I are very close. We are both parents. We get together with our kids. But, being parents, we are a lot busier. We work so much, that most of our spare time is spent with our families.
Greg- On the set, if we aren't shooting, they are wrestling and having a good time and starting food fights. They have a real brother relationship. That's why it transforms itself on the screen.
May 10, 05:48 PM
Greg - We have like 13 writers and basically we sit in a room and come up with stories together. Sometimes they're easy, sometimes it takes us a whole week to come up with a story. Once we get a story, there's a whole process of outlines and drafts until we get a script ready to show the actors.
Ethan - The cast has nothing to do with that process. Though I always feel like they listen to us, but I never feel like we have better ideas than them.
May 10, 05:47 PM
Ethan- Randy has been getting a tattoo of the blueprint of the prison lay out for his body. He will break his brother out of jail next season!
May 10, 05:45 PM
Greg - Two days later I got a call from my 8th grade social studies teacher who watched it from Florida, and I had a nice conversation with him. I did not hear from the woman who threw trash cans at me or got gum stuck on my shoe, and I also did not hear from God.
May 10, 05:44 PM
Greg- My Name is Earl. I watch a lot of dramas. I watch 'The Shield', 'Lost', and 'Heroes'. For comedies, I like, 'The Office' and '30 Rock'. My new favorite shows are 'Deadliest Catch' and 'Westside Chopper'. I would say Ethan's favorite shows are anything Rachel Ray, 'Project Runway' and 'Dancing with the Stars'!
Ethan- I want it to be known that I don't like 'Dancing with the Stars' and Rachel Ray!
May 10, 05:42 PM
Greg - No, I'm not a collector! We were shooting somewhere in Van Nuys on the street, and across the street there was this western wear store I walked across the street to buy a shirt as fast as I could. Then walked back across the street to a lot of laughter and so I wore it the rest of the day. I wore it on the DVD and then also wore it to the Tim McGraw concert. And I went back to watch an episode of Yes Dear, and saw that shirt on there too!
Ethan - That shirt is a perfect fit!
May 10, 05:40 PM
Ethan- I always liked the idea of karma. It wasn't something I discovered with the show, it came with fatherhood. I wanted to set an example for my kid or kids. Karma is a valuable thing. I am glad people are that from the show.
Greg- I believe in karma, but it hasn't changed my thinking. Karma is always in the back of my mind.
May 10, 05:39 PM
Greg - We flirted with some love for Randy this year, with Nadine and I'm sure going into season 3 we will continue to search for the perfect woman for Randy. And with Earl, we stayed away from it mostly except for some dabbling...knowing where we wanted to go this season we didn't want to get him into a relationship where he can't be a girl. But I think going into Season 3 it's something we'll investigate. Seems like something big in Earl's life we haven't tackled yet.
Ethan - I'd be very interested to see how that's investigated in the first episode, Garcia! Of course since the pilot, I was pining for Catalina, so to finally have that kind of settled and done is nice. I loved Amy Sedaris and thought she did such a great job. There's a real different between Amy Sedaris and Catalina...Randy is all over the place with his love interests.
May 10, 05:37 PM
Greg- Jason came in and I was a fan and he wanted to do it. So we casted Earl. I was watching DVD commentary for 'Without a Paddle' and saw Ethan. I was impressed with the small things he does that adds to the character. I looked at him and wanted to see if he was interested in doing the show. Jason's agent saw Ethan was looking at the show and called in and said, "Hey, that's Jason's buddy", Jason and him did 'Mallrats together'...so we got Ethan.
May 10, 05:35 PM
Greg - Earl was just based on my own imagination...not on anybody in particular. Although I can say there are various Earls...growing up I knew a lot of earls...and had a lot of them in my own family. So I took a little from every Earl I knew and put them into the character. Except none of the Earls I know are making up for wrong-doing...just keep doing wrong.
Ethan - I think I ran more in the Bad Ralph crowd. I had people in my life who were somewhat like Earl, but not really much anymore now that I have kids. I have to weed those people out, unless they were like our Earl and doing good stuff. There just aren't a whole lot of people like that.
May 10, 05:34 PM
Ethan- I think Steve Buscemi or Paul Giamatti would work well in Camden County.
Greg- I would love Spielberg to direct an episode next season.
Ethan- I heard he's a big fan of the show. He sent me an email, telling me he's a fan. I saw Steven on Easter Day and he told me he was a fan of the show.
May 10, 05:20 PM
Greg - Camden is nowhere! It's a fictional town that exists on an upside down globe.
Ethan - I can't really add to that at all...that answer's pretty perfect.
May 10, 05:07 PM
Greg and Ethan are here and we are happy to report that Jaime couldn't join us because it's so late in her pregnancy.
