What Did You Think It Would Be Like? Season 5 Begins!

Biggest Loser, Season 5 is here! It seems like just yesterday I was saying goodbye to Bill, Holly, Julie & Isabeau. (oh, right… the finale was only 2 weeks ago.lol) And here we are again. A new ranch again this season. With 20 new contestants. 20!!! I mean, that is a lot of people.

Right from when we first started discussing the possibility of doing teams of two, I loved the idea. To have a teammate with you, going through this experience, would add so many interesting dynamics to the show. First of all, you have a built in support system. Some one who will love you no matter what happens on campus. But, then in some ways maybe it’s harder too. And gotta love Jillian’s comment – they may be bringing their ‘enabler’ with them…What’s harder: getting on the scale in front everyone in America, or getting on the scale in front of your husband?

It’s a little bit difficult to get to know 20 new people right away. Some personalities stand out more than others. Paul for example… he teased me and let me in on his sense of humor right away. And I am, of course, fascinated by his relationship with his ex-wife, Kelly. They both seem like great people, and its so interesting that they are ex’s who decided to team up for an experience like the Biggest Loser. Obviously they still care about each other a lot.

Right away, I love Dan – he is hilarious, and very charming. He and his mom are so boisterous and they have a very loving relationship. Talking to all three parent-child teams really struck home for me. I have a young son, and I am trying so hard to teach him healthy eating habits and getting him outside to play all the time, so I know how tough it is. And I relate to these Bette-Sue, Jackie and Lynn, feeling like they are responsible for their child being in this situation. But I love the pro-active attitude both members of these teams have taken. The kids aren’t letting their parents take all the responsibility, and they are definitely all taking on the challenge of getting healthy.

I look forward to getting to know all the other teams as well… based on the challenges this week, the Black team is setting a pretty high standard. They are clearly going after everything on Campus no holes barred. And Bette-Sue seemed to struggle with her confidence when facing our very first challenge. But when she finished in the middle of the pack at the balloon challenge I could see her confidence go way up. It was just too bad to see the purple team, Maggie and Jenn have such trouble out there on the course. They are such great girls and great friends, I am glad they have another week here. It’s hard to say goodbye to anyone, but I was so sad to see Lynn and Jenny leave. The father/daughter bond they share is obvious, and Lynn clearly made a positive, strong impression on the house. During the elimination, Bernie, Mark and some others really tried to help motivate Lynn to go home and continue his road to health, for his family. They were all really rooting them on.

We’re starting off on another great season of Biggest Loser!

I loved getting to see what the new set of contestents looked like I love this show it can help me out with my new years resolution thanks for being so kind.

Love the couples! Great twist on the BL formula. Can't wait to see what happens! By the way, Ali, you're doing great as the host.

P.S. I have watched DOOL since I was 16 (1986). I am glad the writers are finally letting your character mature. It has been a good transition.

My husband and I are so inspired and we look forward to who will win this season. We also have joined in on the million 1b contest. Than has truly been a goal setter for me. Thank you...

Ali,
I have ALSO been watching you on DOOL since I was a little kid! (1979) You are fantastic! And I love that you are the HOST of this wonderful show! I am new to watching this season and I loved the 1st episode! You are doing a great job and this show has REALLY inspired me to lose weight and get fit for overall health with my husband! I wish I could have Jillian and Bob every single day!! We will try to do this on our own.
Side comment though: I would LOVE to join the club, but I don't think it's fair that people have to pay for it. I saw all of you on Larry King, and Bob is right. PEOPLE NEED KNOWLEDGE WHEN IT COMES TO THIS! I wish the show would give the internet users the material for free.

Sincerely,
# 1 Fan, Andrea (Originally from NY, now live in NC)
28 years old

I have watched Biggest Loser from the very beginning. Loved it then and love it even more now that you host. I love that Jillian is back.

I used to watch Days when I was younger, but now with being a single mom of three kids and only one tv, Days is not the priority it once was. I always loved Sami though.

Alli,
I have caught the biggest loser somewhat but since you have been hosting it, I love it. I am looking forward to this season. I am rooting for the ex's couple (Paul and Kelly). I think they are making a positive example to people that are watching. I also am a huge fan of DOOL and I have watched for over 7 years now. I am so grateful for soapnet. If i miss it on nbc, i can just get caught up on soapnet later. I really enjoy sami and i can't wait until the end result of lucas and sami. I think that sami has grown alot and you play the character very well. I hope you had a blessed holiday season. Thank you so much for being a good role model on Days and The Biggest Loser

You are doing a great job on BL!! My husband and I love watching it together.

I have always been a Days fan and a BL fan and I love that you are doing both!! You seem to quit talking about Days though Is BL a bigger passion?

Awesome job on BL Ali! I have been watching Days since 5th grade (that would be 1985!) It has been great to see your character grow up!
Your little boy is adorable! I had a little girl the same time.
I think you are doing a great job on BL! :-)

I think that unless the all-girl teams make some strong friends in some of the other teams, they will get knocked out almost immediately. I think from the past couple of seasons that we have found that it is possible for a girl to be in the finale but not to win it. Men have an easier time losing weight than women do, and maybe some tips should be given to the women...just so that they don't lose hope when working out with the guys and not seeing the same results. I also think the Biggest Loser Club should be free. More people would join. Use one of the 10 sponsors to help cover the costs of the memberships online.

Hi Ali,
I have always loved you on DOOL. and seeing you each Tuesday night is even better. My daughter, Ashley who is 8 loves Biggest Looser and looks forward to it weekly! It is an inspiration to see the before and after....looking forward to another great season.

Dont know how else to get a comment or message to the producers, etc of The Biggest Loser. I am struck that the usual reason given for participation is a desire to live a realistic life expectancy and quality of life - for children and the like. This leads me to believe that most of these people have not insignificant medical problems - already diagnoses.

So, why not reveal the actual benefits. Most people are fighting to meet some magical APPEARANCE goal when they state it is a health issue. So, note the health benefits. You may be able to do this without compromising the health privacy (but then they've pretty much signed off).

Note - how many have Hypertension, Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, Heart Conditions, Arthritis.
How many medicines do they take a day. (all should be taking a minimum of a baby aspirin daily.) How many were dropped within the first week? etc etc.

Most dont realize you really only need to lose 5-10% of your weight to have a significant metabolic effect - effect on diabetes, hypertension, heart disease.

Hi Ali, Great job on the show and GREAT show!!!!! I am a Physical educator and am a fan of the show. I think the real reason I'm such a fan is because "all" the women in my family are obese except me and I'm scared about them. My older sister has gained over 100lbs in the last 2 year and now has been diagnosed with type II diabetes. She is constantly dieting and trying to work out. I have even driven up to LA to help motivate her and work out with her. I'm worried about her because she has tried every diet in the world and her weight has roller coastered up and down before but now she is only getting bigger. I know that the show could help her becuase it would take her out of her situation now and put her in a place where she can learn more than just "dieting." Is there a form that is available to fill out to see who fits in for the show because I know she would be GREAT!!!!! thanks for reading!!!!!

I really liked the "Chamber of Truth" this week, no matter how disturbing it was. It got me thinking about the "just one, once in a while" that I do, in the aggregate. And THAT was what was the most disturbing.

The show is so motivating and inspirational. I have always been a fan of yours from the first time you appeared on DOOL. You seem like you really enjoy interacting with the contestants and I was really impressed when I heard that you often worked out with them. Your interest in them seems genuine. You really do a great job.

I'm in my own battle for my life in a quest to lose over 200 pounds and I'm blogging about my journey and its been a turning point in my life.

I just have to ask, did your stomach churn just a little bit while watching the Chamber of Truth segment? WOW what an eye opener.

Looking forward to seeing the coming weeks!

Hello just wanted to say I've been a big fan of the show since the begining! But what I would love to see is a show that has people on there with health issues already that are limiting them from the exercise that is done on the show. We need the confidence and emotional support that we can't get or afford. I think they should do a show that involes participants to have limited physical abilities. That would strengthen and motivate them . Like me I need water activity to work out ' but don't know the proper techniques, there for I'm scared I will hurt myself further. A show like that would inhanace the realality of everday life in the obese world for the ones that are futher along than the contestants that they get.And the amazing fact that our lives have been saved and can return in the everyday world agian stronger and healthier!Just a thought from one of the many that are dying inless we can get the proper help that we need and where else than "THE BIGGEST LOSER" that would show it can be done on people with major health issuse! Lots of Love to all and GOD BLESS Kathy

Great job this week can't wiat to see what happens next.

Been a fan of the show since the beginning myself. I am in Canada and love the contestants and their quirkiness and determination once they get it. Is there anyway you can ask if they would come north of the border to do a Canadian version of The Biggest Loser

Kimberley in Vancouver BC Canada

I love theshow and I think they couldnt have chosen a better host than yourself! you are amazing!

I have watched DOOL since it first came on - I will be 50 this year. I can't seem to get interested in watching all of BL, and I was wondering why you seem to blog so much about it but seem to have lost interest in blogging about DOOL and your son and other interests.
Also want you to know I think you are beautiful no matter what you wear or how you do your hair, and you are a great and uninhibited actress. You seem to be a beautiful person on the inside too. Thanks for all you do.
Cathy
